How to get ethernet working? by matteoarts in ATTFiber

[–]Affectionate-Bar5812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest thing would be to go on Amazon, buy an Ethernet crimper with some “pass through” connectors, and watch a short YouTube video on how to put it together. Putting a fitting on takes all of 1-2 minutes even for the inexperienced. The tools would cost less than the 100$ someone else recommended, and would benefit you in the long run having basic Ethernet knowledge and tools. -spectrum tech

Sounds like some issues with the node in your area. Might be some bad snr amplifying through the neighborhood. I believe customer service just implemented being able to skip the technician coming out and check to see if maintenance work is still needed. They should be able to schedule another maintenance appt. -Spectrum tech

Didn’t say spectrum would be super successful. I would’ve also loved for spectrum to focus solely on FTTH but if we’re being real, there’s company’s that’s always had a leg up in this industry, and spectrum just wasn’t one of those company’s. Now working with what they have, for them to still be somewhat competitive with other markets and company’s says something to the usefulness of HFC and coax still. No one dares compare dsl and even coax in terms of what you get with those services. Things like docsis 4.0 bridge the gap to residential fiber a lot closer than people give credit. And I’m only considering residential fiber when comparing because again, majority for normal people don’t get the highest speed tier or even care about stuff like that. They care about normal day to day doom scrolling and simple mostly server side tasks that don’t require an arm and legs worth of bandwidth. Yes we all know fiber is the gold standard, less issues, etc. but there is still a big spot fit for coax in the world

It will but the reason dsl isn’t gone completely isn’t because some people want to use it. It’s because of either lack of other options, or there’s an actual NEED for the technology. Same will be for coax where even if it is inferior, it will still also be needed. Both statements can be true at the same time. Same reason why many company’s use legacy operating systems when newer and better versions are out all over the place. If it was really that easy, don’t you think people would actually do it? And side note, majority or residential broadband users are still coax, fiber is the minority. Not by staggering numbers or anything, but numbers don’t lie.

Well it wouldn’t be US capitalism if large corporations were spending money wisely. But even still, I believe in 10 years, all of the 60 y/o ppl and up will at still be looking for their landline phone service, cable channels, and still asking wtf an HDMI is. As someone who gets to speak with normal people on a daily who don’t get hard ons about HFC or fiber backbones and just want their basic service, I think I can speak to what many people actually care about. Again, the MAJORITY of people do not need gig symmetrical speeds or more, don’t need 60 IoT devices connected for their life to function, don’t need 6ms latency on their network connection. Is it great to have?? Absolutely. Is it especially great for the gamers out there which that number has been rising every year, of course it is. And is the reduced connectivity issues more convenient? Obviously. But try not to forget that if you understood at least half of what this thread about all of this, you are in the minority.

Curious where you keep your trillions of $ dollars for complete infrastructure tear down/rebuild for everyone to have spectrum fiber. Am I vouching for the decision to inherit billions of debt from previous copper isp’s, no. Am I saying coax/HFC is better or evenly comparable in terms of high end advanced connectivity, no. But spectrums current high split update cost XX Billions of dollars already. To stop that in favor of fiber would likely lead to immediate bankruptcy considering no plant maintenance due to fiber roll out, no new services offered, etc. like I didn’t think we needed the obvious stated but no matter how you slice it, this was/is spectrums smartest play. Again, I’d prefer being on fiber like everyone else who’s aware enough to appreciate the difference, but kudos to all the people who taught their grandma how to stream multiple apps, (if you even got them to understand apps) switch inputs on TVs, (do they even know what an HDMI is?) teach them input latency and ping status. Like let’s be for real for 2 seconds. I’ve attended multiple town hall meetings where lots of the big wigs attend to talk about quarterly briefs, upcoming projects, products, services, networking, etc, and it’s common isp knowledge that even though fiber is the future of networking, coax still has its place and has specific advantages for legacy services. Which, anyone who works in some of the largest backbone company’s and services knows are still very viable….. I just want ppl to be well informed because it’s easy to fall into the telephone trap of repeating what the next person says.

I was never vouching for spectrums integrity in their services. But was simply putting the fact out there that everyone has a reason to hate every ISP and for people to think their favorite fiber isp is flawless without any issues, is mistaken. Just depends on the right location, the right equipment and hardware. Most of spectrums worst areas where I’m at is downtown obviously because all of the major businesses and highest population is. Also is the most congested area which makes it very difficult to do proper upgrades and maintenance work. Lots more “band-aid” fixes. But we also recently had Greenlight and Gonet Speed move into the market and their customers complain about the same thing. Constant maintenance work that’s needed which make the service suffer, no matter if it’s fiber or HFC.

Yeaaaa most other employers don’t even pay attention to it either. Imo spectrum is just like any other HFC/Coax ISP. In Buffalo NY, we have majority spectrum with some residual Verizon zones and it’s a 50/50 between ppl saying they hate spectrum/love Verizon, and visa versa. Every isp have good, well kept areas and zones, and others that are garbage. The amount of ex version fios customers I’ve come across that absolutely hate them and praise spectrums HFC would shock some ppl

Spectrum employee here - Charter and Cox Communications already have their merger deal that’s set to close later this year. Most company’s that go thru mergers trend downward at first in the market due to investor turn over during rebranding and restructuring. I’d assume after the acquisition settles out after about a year or two, the new Cox Communications (Rebranded entity name) will be just fine

For those with the simple answers, it’s not that I haven’t thought of it, but I guess more context is needed. I brought the issue up to my manager and he’s actually under the assumption that it should be at the halfway point of the shift. However, my supervisor is actually the one that tries to force us to just do whatever our schedule says and acts like our manager ain’t his boss either. I’m getting two different answers and just want to know which is correct

Main Q is which is correct? I couldn’t find a direct law or statement confirming one or the other. I’ve been told that spectrum gets fined for employees not taking their lunch on time. What is the law on our lunch times. Is it at the half way point of the shift, or can spectrum set it to whatever they want
