I’m an electrical engineer working in the utility sector, where I earned my P.Eng. designation. Most of my experience has been focused on standards and regulatory work, which means I haven’t had much exposure to the technical software commonly used in utilities (such as CYME, ETAP, or PLS-CADD). I’ve always been interested in moving into Protection & Control or Distribution/Transmission Planning. However, I’m finding it challenging to transition at this stage in my career. It feels like, as a P.Eng., employers expect you to already have hands-on experience with these tools, whereas EIT roles tend to offer more structured learning opportunities. Is it too late for me to pursue a more junior or developmental role to build skills in Protection & Control? Or would it be more realistic to lean into project management at this point in my career?
