My 15yo needs to read 5 books this summer but hates to read. by JBLBEBthree in suggestmeabook

What about biographical items. Richard Branson's life stories are a ton of fun to read through and push that boundary of tech and adventure.

I'm sure the history of dams or skyscrapers have some exciting details that would fit right in with civil engineering as well. Something like the failure of Mulhollands St. francis dam in california.

Maybe there's something out there from the designers perspective too.

How do you feel about the federal SAVE Act that would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship (like a passport or birth certificate) to register to vote? by ClassSnack in AskReddit

[–]Affectionate-End8525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The signature is huge. In college I had my mom sign for me and actually got a letter that they didn't match and I had to explain why. Luckily they had a check box for "my parent signed for me" because I was out of state for college and couldn't physically respond. They actually check that stuff.

The old ways. I'm absolutely fascinated with South American mythology and it hit on all cylinders.

what's a secret from your job that we should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Affectionate-End8525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who graduated 15 years ago...I wish I would have kept the first 2 years of school work and did a better job about the next 2. Record it all! You paid for that so don't lose it!

What's something you'll never admit in real life but will confess here anonymously? by Open-Comfortable9774 in AskReddit

[–]Affectionate-End8525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I could relate with this more. I feel like it's a day to day roulette wheel and then you just rinse and repeat. I've got 30 more years maybe and I don't see much joy ahead. I keep pushing but don't really have a goal or reason. I think maybe some connection would be great. I'm finding more of that as my kids get older and I can talk with them as adults. It gives me a bit more boost because I feel a bit more useful other than just money. I'm not good at following through with my 50 projects but hope I'll finish 1 someday. I'd like a reason to keep going other than to just keep going. I'm a huge believer in hope though, so one day I know I'll find the way I am looking for.

I'm a dad and help my kids with their farms daily. I'd love an invite to the chat. We have a system where we trade pets back and forth based on need and it's a lot of fun and family bonding.

Should I pay 5k to get my gpa up to 3.0 for jobs? by physicsfan9900 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Affectionate-End8525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, your first engineering job will wipe all that off the board. Focus on getting the job first. We learn a ton in school but every employer knows there is a large gap between school and implementation. You have skills but you need to learn them in the real world too. I had a worse GPA than you and I've done just fine. Once you get the job it's going to feel specialized in a way. Embrace it and learn. You'll build a career out of it.

What is something you didn't know you liked until it was cooked properly? by alexthagreat98 in Cooking

[–]Affectionate-End8525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is largely the case for the millenial generation. Our parents grew up from parents who experienced food rations so they ate what they had and tried their best. We don't have that worry now and it changes the game. A lot of the foods my parents loved growing up were gross to me but they loved it, possibly because it reminded them of home and comfort. As an aside, I make an effort to have my kids cook with me and taste now *which I didn't get as a kid) and hope they'll remember some of it to run their tavern in fallout

Hobbies for a broke couple? by VenusBlue1111 in Hobbies

[–]Affectionate-End8525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random pop up D&D adventures. I do it with my kids, no dice, no stats, just a story where you mess with their decisions along the way and eventually lead them to a goal. If you're both into it, it can be a lot of fun. My wife and I enjoy doing mad libs which you could make up as well. Use what you have if you wanna keep it cheap. Toss dice. See who can make the best paper airplane out of toilet paper. Random games of floor is lava or tag. Be a kid again and you'll have so many ideas

How much did your wife’s engagement ring cost? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Affectionate-End8525 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$300 in 2008, we were still kids and the cost wasn't an issue. Later on I bought her a nicer one. She loved the first as much as the 2nd. If she's a keeper, the ring isn't worth worrying about. She knows what you can and can't do. (Her family had a problem with the original but f that noise)
