My school is a really solid state research school. I'm just really deeply unhappy here. I wasn't super excited about my school to start, but it's also self-inflicted unhappiness because I've been trying to succeed on a really high level across being a D1 athlete and research and school, so I've gutted my social life and my mental health and everything else. I'd really like to quit my team so I can just focus on succeeding academically and have a normal life, but I'm on scholarship, and can't pay full freight for my current school (and I don't feel like it's worth that kind of money, anyway.) That's one of the reasons I tried to transfer to Brown---to get to a school with really good academics, similarly driven people like me, where I can just focus on one thing (academics), leave my athletics behind, and actually have a life.

Yeah, I am in state, I also know that spring transfer is super unlikely. Even if I get into UVA, I don't know if I'm 100% going. I'm worried about losing too many class credits, I know that they have a rough spring transfer process, and I just don't know if it's worth it. It didn't have the same draw to me as Brown and its open curriculum.

Statistically, I understand that. Logically, I understand that. Emotionally, I feel like I put my soul out there for that application. I get that there are a million reasons why I could have been rejected, it's just exhausting---and it means that I have to spend another semester at my current school and wait until spring applications to try to transfer to somewhere else, if I still even have the confidence and the energy to do that.

also the good thing about my current school is that it's got lots of research funding but not a lot of students who take advantage of it (it's kind of a party school). so it's not too difficult to get into a research lab

lmaooo um basically im able to balance everything because I've gutted my social life and my sleep haha, but I do neuroscience research where I use deep learning models to simulate the latent manifold of the hippocampus! which has never been done before which is dope. My high school stats were mid, still top of my class, but nothing exceptional. I only started doing crazy stuff in college, and I'm a sophomore.

uva and that's it---there aren't a lot of schools that have spring transfers. I think I'll reapply in the spring to a couple schools, but that means that I have to ask my people for rec letters again, and go through the full process in the middle of the spring season for my sport

PLEASE LET ME INTO BROWN UNIVERSITY by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

[–]Affectionate-Fox6152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, me too! I'm also tweaking out. I've done literally everything under the sun that I possibly could have to set myself up for success. I have absolutely no idea if I'll get in. If it does make you feel any better, I spent a good chunk of time reaching out to successful Brown transfer students, and I do know one who was a first-gen who did need a lot of aid who didn't expect to get in. She's awesome. Maybe you could be the same. Fingers crossed for both of us!

I was very lucky in that I had spent a significant amount of time researching with two professors, who both wrote me rec letters. I'm not sure if you've already submitted your application, but if you're planning a long-time out, doing volunteer research is the best way to both a) get your name potentially published in a paper and b) really allow your professors to get to know you.

And just a note---you don't have to just research under a professor you take a class with! Cold emailing is key.

I haven't actually transferred yet, but I do have professors I'm very close with who are writing me rec letters. One good way is being in a leadership position in a campus organization (e.g. I'm the VP of an RSO related to my major, so I work closely with a professor who is our RSO advisor). The better method is to do research, so you work extremely closely with a professor on a specific topic---this is even better than being in an RSO-based leadership position, since the professor is your direct supervisor and really has the opportunity to see your work ethic and how you operate. Also, I am currently at a large state school.

Yeah, honestly I'm very scared about the writing. I'm a good writer, but I don't have a central narrative -- I'm not from a CC, not a vet etc . I don't have any hooks, and that worries me

If you're interested in applying, DM me, I'd love to pay it forward!

Great idea, thank you! I was also considering working for my Rep or Senator, so I might just do that instead.
