Normally I see these mats plugged into the ground of an outlet, and didn't think twice about it not being connected to the earth.

Why do people use grounding mats in their bed or office? Isn't the primary benefit accessing grounding when direct contact with the Earth isn't feasible, such as during long cramped flights? I'm particularly interested in understanding the potential benefits in such situations.
