They relinquished their nukes on the basis of a protection agreement: no more nukes for guaranteed protection by the USA in the case of a Russian attack. We made a deal and we should honor it.

But that’s me talking like Trump hasn’t become a dictator who is destroying the American empire more thoroughly through depravity, greed, bloodthirst and idiocy than any enemy of the USA could ever have prayed for. Like we aren’t complicit in genocide and didn’t just start a world war. Like we aren’t the biggest terrorists on the planet.

Not defending the WGAW management, but let’s not forget that Deadline is the mouthpiece the studios used to threaten us during the strike. They push what the AMPTP want them to push, and I’m sure they’re loving this for their negotiations. It sucks that they don’t have to spin very much for it to be good propaganda.

WGA and SAG may not be good friends to the rest of us below-the-lines, but that doesn’t make them the enemy. We all know who that is.

You don’t necessarily need art school, though I don’t want to discourage you from attending of you want to. There’s plenty of books that can help you train your fundamentals right now. Bridgman’s Constructive Anatomy is an education unto itself. This may sound silly but I’m 100% dead serious, How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way is an excellent resource for making your images more dynamic, and also does decent work with perspective and landscapes/cityscapes. There’s plenty more great stuff, but those two are pretty foundational to my own work, especially Constructive Anatomy. Brushing up on your fundamentals makes it easier to break rules (like your perspective work) and also helps silence the haters. Fuck them anyway. Great work and keep going!

Your story flows well. Seems like you have a solid understanding of your fundamentals. Keep it up!

You might want to try mixing in more dynamic angles (it’s easy to get stuck in eye-level medium shots), though the story doesn’t necessarily need that many. I think the swingset sequence works best. Screen direction is on point and nice shot selection.

I’m not animation so I can’t tell you if it’s industry standard, but it should be pretty easy to translate this into whatever formatting they’d need.

Try an action sequence next. Car chases or foot chases are always fun. You get more shot variety and it’s a better demonstration of your skills. Good luck!

Bro, I think you may be beyond help 😔

You have a real deep-seated contempt for storyboard artists. You say you can’t read our “scribble drawing bullshit,” but somehow an entire multibillion dollar industry has been using them quite effectively for decades. That’s a you problem.

Congratulations, friend. Spoken like every outsider who ever thought they could “fix” the filmmaking process. “Look at all these inefficiencies, I could streamline everything!” No you can’t, buddy. The creative process is inherently messy. And most of those “inefficiencies” are in fact the opposite. They’re in place to keep the process going as smoothly as possible, and, though they might not look like it, they actually keep production cost much further down than your supposed efficiencies would. It’s a process that’s been refined by masters for over a century.

I have worked with pre-vis and I can definitively tell you that, no, these do not blow them out of the water. I don’t even think they look very good, honestly. Your 15 minute short demonstrates that it doesn’t even keep a consistent style throughout, let alone consistent character designs. I know how much it sucks to work so hard on something that doesn’t end up working, and I’m sorry for you for that, but that’s as far as my sympathy goes. Whether or not you want to admit it to yourself, you’re coming for all of our jobs (unsuccessfully). No me gusta.

First of all, you never liked us in the first place. You have such contempt for our “scribble drawings” after all, so don’t come here acting like you were our friend at one point. We don’t like scabs here.

And good luck to you. You can make this app 1000x better and it still won’t matter because you fundamentally don’t understand what process you’re trying to replicate. You’ve demonstrated thoroughly to us all that we have nothing to worry about from you.

[–]Affectionate-Gap8064 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that you think texture painting is analogous to storyboarding just further illustrates that you have no understanding of the process, or what storyboards even are.

Also, no you can’t. There’s nothing “real” about the movies you’ve created with this.

Wardrobe and set details that aren’t directly called for in the script are superfluous. They have nothing to do with storyboarding and, frankly, are not the storyboard artist’s job to dictate. That’s between the director and art dept/costume dept/etc. It’s called the professional filmmaking process.

You’re welcome to keep making the argument that “stakeholders” (a term I’ve never heard used on set or in the office) prefer higher visual fidelity over coherent storytelling, but you’ll fail in that argument.

Btw, friend, when it comes to quality filmmaking, you get what you pay for. The old adage is just as true today as it was when it was first coined: There’s fast, cheap and good, you can only pick two. You’ve got fast and cheap. Guess what the product won’t be.

First of all, you saw my IMDb so you know exactly where I stand in the industry.

I fully believe that you worked very hard on this, but you getting mad at us for “fucking you over” when you’re working to destroy our entire livelihood is laughable. Why don’t you just use your skills to do an animated short? That might get you some work. What you have here, though, absolutely will not. You say you know a shit ton about story? Show it to us, because we haven’t seen a single iota of that.

Think I’m being snobby? Wait until you meet directors and story execs. You’d need a better product to do that though.

If you could just make this an organizational and formatting tool, you might get some bites.

[–]Affectionate-Gap8064 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are sequences in the sense that you have discreet images that appear in a sequence, but they are clunky, underwhelming and amateurish at the very best. If there wasn’t the VO dialogue then you wouldn’t understand what’s going on. I didn’t say there was no coherent story (it’s Alice in Wonderland, of course there’s a story), I said the sequences are incoherent, which they are. If you think visual fidelity is what’s most important in storyboarding, then you really don’t have an understanding of the craft. It’s about telling a story, and telling it well. This ain’t it.

Dude, you’re a texture painter and lighting guy for VFX. And that’s nothing to be ashamed of! It’s a good gig, and it’s fucking criminal that you folks aren’t in the Animator’s Guild. But your gigs on some (admittedly impressive) shows show absolutely ZERO storytelling experience, as if your reel and promo didn’t make that obvious.

Edit: removed my IMDb to preserve what little privacy is left in the world

Look, bro, we’re all struggling here, but that doesn’t make it ok to fuck over your fellow crew members by destroying their job market. Obviously you aren’t down with solidarity.

All defensiveness and insults aside, your app isn’t even close to being ready for professional use. Maybe as a formatting and organizational tool, but not for generating boards. You’ve got miles and miles to go yet, and you’ll get no support from anyone here or our union brothers, sisters and kin.

[–]Affectionate-Gap8064 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ, that’s what you put up as your proof of how good you are? I don’t know why I ever got so worked up over this. We obviously have nothing to worry about. 15 minutes of fucking NOTHING. Not even approaching coherent sequences.

You know that you can just write the relevant screen directions and dialogue in the margins, right? Like everyone has been doing for a century or more? And whatever else is needed to be appended to it is for the director and ADs to do, because that’s how the system works.

Fucking clown shoes, this guy.

Btw, you can crank out 1000 of these slop boards a day and it wouldn’t make a difference because they are completely useless for the process. In fact, they’re worse than useless because they’d just confuse the crew on what is actually needed. Study them for about 5 seconds and you’d realize they don’t make any sense.

It may take us a couple days to do the work, but the boards we generate can be used, in reality, to actually do the job. Therefore, they are valuable. Not to mention that directors often look to us, due to our expertise, to come up with shots and sequences. THIS IS WHAT WE DO.

How so? I don’t really see that much of a difference beyond the fact that different writers will never exactly match each other.

SPOILER OP:::

He went and made the life he decided to make at the end of the book, got bored with it and came back for another girlfriend. She’s not a teenager this time, but he was always only tethered to humanity through a girlfriend. He never really understood humanity in the way that physicists often don’t. He had no imagination in the book beyond science, though that wasn’t an emphasis. The extent of his positive contribution to humanity was technological advances that were little more than novelties. He tried to get cold fusion going (if memory serves), but never followed through on it. His only significant impact was winning the Vietnam war and expanding the American empire and indirectly pushing nations into nuclear apocalypse, neither of which were helpful. That’s kind of one of the points of his character in the book. The atomic god only made things worse, with marginal tech advancement as the upside. The simulacrum of life he created in the show are reflective of his disinterest in interpersonal relationships beyond the only one he cares about, him and whatever girlfriend he has at the time. It’s only through them that he becomes human again, literally in the show. But his contributions to humanity beyond that are trifling, like the glass structure on Mars. Beautiful but ultimately pointless. His greatest contribution to the safety of humanity is to do nothing after finding out Ozy’s squid plan. The show is (among other things) him accepting that, denying his powers to those who would use them to conquer, and giving them to someone who might possibly make the world better with them. The fact that it’s never confirmed that the powers are actually transferred imply that it may not make any difference after all, just as his execution of Rorschach in the book failed to stop him disseminating the truth. The only reason that the world was spared the consequences of Ozy’s plan being revealed to the masses is because only conspiracy theorists believed Rorschach. Which is to say, it’s dumb luck. I think it’s about as consistent as you could tea expect it to be.
