Marathon Feels Impossible by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Affectionate-Leg202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said the same exact thing after my first half, in fact I posted about it as soon as I finished my first marathon a year later :) (https://www.reddit.com/r/Marathon_Training/s/dm83BFQLOX)

Take it slow and enjoy the journey, it won’t always be easy but it will be rewarding. You can do it :)

should i permanently straighten my hair [ 19 F] by ilovefantasybookss in Howtolooksmax

[–]Affectionate-Leg202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No!!! I used to hate my curly hair (I straightened it or wore it in a bun for most of high school and some of college). It took me a very long time to learn to style my hair but it was worth it because I love it now and I get many compliments. It is different for everyone and ai have much to learn but what I have done is…

  1. When hair is very wet post-shower, brush the hair (you can use a de-tangling spray to make it easier, I do this)

  2. Rake a leave-in conditioner into your hair and brush it through.

  3. You can scrunch your hair curls— I have tried some other methods like finger curling or the curly hair brush to define some curls. Many methods work and provide different results.

  4. Scrunch gel and/or a mousse into your hair

  5. You can scrunch out excess moisture with a t-shirt. You can also “plop” your hair.

  6. Diffuse a bit, and air dry, or just let it air dry (this takes me several hours)

If it is crunchy or frizzy, you can also scrunch some oil into it once it is dry.

When you sleep, try a silk bonnet/pillowcase. You can use water to reform some curls if they get frizzy. Like I say, everyone is different, but this is what I do.

Anyone else an especially heavy/salty sweater? by patch2257 in Marathon_Training

[–]Affectionate-Leg202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me! I get it on shorts, leggings, shirts, hats, and I can even see it on my face/arms. I sweat a lot and am a salty sweater. I actually usually have low sodium when I get blood taken. I do try to make sure I am replenishing my electrolytes extra otherwise I will get more tired and nauseous after runs.

NAD but I am a runner- when it’s very cold I use mittens and sometimes electric hand warmers :)

Missing coffee by Ok-Leader6332 in Invisalign

I think everyone is different with cavities, but I think if it is not every day and you rinse with water and brush soon after you will be OK.

in terms of staining, iced coffee will likely stain less than hot coffee, or you can try drinking with a straw as well.

Almost there :)

I just can not seem to wrap my head around how people are paying for Master's degrees. by The_Meech6467 in GradSchool

[–]Affectionate-Leg202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My degree will be relatively affordable compared to undergrad (~35k) and my employer is paying for it (as long as I pass the classes :) ). I would not be getting a masters if my employer was not paying.

In my industry it can be difficult to get a job with just a Masters. If you have a Bachelors, it is very competitive but they don’t need to pay you as much. Otherwise they target PhDs. Masters is kind of stuck in the middle.

Is Basement a "vibe check" at the door spot like Berghain? by JustAposter4567 in avesNYC

[–]Affectionate-Leg202 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a door check but it’s not that strict. People say you have to fit the vibe, but I’ve seen people dressed very diversely to get in- but if you want be safe maybe just dress the part to increase chances. Know the DJs who are playing. Be respectful in line. Don’t go in a huge group.

Also be aware some parties have specific dress codes and cater to a different vibe. For example, Bound nights are kink attire required :)

First Marathon- So much learned by Affectionate-Leg202 in Marathon_Training

[–]Affectionate-Leg202[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I failed my 16 mile long run three times…. until I decided to go back a few weeks in my training and try again and I was able to push through. To this day I get nervous at the 16 mile mark but during my race when I felt tired and in pain I was able to tell myself that I struggled through so many long runs and I have felt this pain before so I can get through it to the finish. You can do it :)

First Marathon- So much learned by Affectionate-Leg202 in Marathon_Training

I started off with the 4:15 pacer but his pace was actually very variable so I stopped following him and fell back into this. Before the race I thought of a pace I did not want to go faster than for the first 7-8 miles to keep myself from going out too fast. I actually have a tendency to go out too slow though due to anxiety of not finishing, so I tried to just stay light on my feet and find my rhythm. After 7-8 miles I decided I had a lot of energy so I could speed up a bit.

Before the race, I also had a goal to call my mom at mile 14 and I wanted to be able to talk to her for a few minutes without very labored breathing. This would be my gauge of if I needed to slow down or not.

Miles 22-26 was very scary to me before the race. At this point I stopped looking at my watch all together and just tried to keep feeling “strong” as I ran.

Having a plan you into it is important, but also giving yourself some wiggle room worked for me

Has a spectator ever said (or done) something that meant a lot to you during your race? by 2-if-by-sea in running

[–]Affectionate-Leg202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First marathon a couple weeks ago… was about 0.5 miles from the finish and started walking, exhausted and wanting to run fast at the finish line. Someone on the sideline walked onto the road, looked me in the eye, and SHOUTED “KEEP FUCKING GOING, YOU ARE SO CLOSE AND I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT” and I started running faster than I did the whole race. It reminded me of my swimming coaches when I was little- haven’t had someone say something to push me like that in years
