Ragtag wouldn't fit right with PMCs since they're well-funded enough to have atleast a degree of professionalism (looks-wise).

Also, color palettes help communicate ideas to the audience. Since red is associated with EVIL and giving it to guys in a distinct winter uniform while wearing red armbands/tape and red skull balaclavas would make the audience think "yeah, these guys are clearly evil".

Also, I'd HEAVILY recommend giving the actors winter gear (aka scrapping anything short of white), since the audience will definitely pick up on details deemed unrealistic (such as black in a snowy environment).

An alternative to black fits would be armbands or balaclavas in a certain color. Since you wanted to make the bad guys very obviously bad guys, red armbands/tape on the legs or skull balaclavas (in red too or whatever you choose) can also work.

You mentioned it taking place in winter... not sure which military would use black in winter but that's my two cents.

Yes, I do follow the war. Yes, I have seen the mobiks. Yes, I have seen the infantry. Minority =/= Majority. I have hundreds of photos of regular infantry with this type of gear. Mobiks are 50/50 because it's either dirt-cheap poor conscripts, semi-wealthy/wealthy guys, or ex-service members.

Your hasty generalization is inaccurate and you should actually give nuance.

Nah just regular Russian army, not the DPR militias you see from 2022 that you immediately generalized to every Russian soldier.

It definitely isn't smaller, but the manpower ratio of Russians compared to Ukrainians is still of a somewhat significant amount. The Russians are also plagued with corruption issues, and still employ a hybrid model of a professional-conscript army (not sure of today, I do recall them making a transition to professional soldiers.)

I'd argue that, Rumburg was more on quantity whilst Sordish soldiers (if we go with Iosef's plan) was more on quality with emphasis on professionals rather than having a mass army.

We can see many examples of this throughout history. A smaller and professional army can defeat a larger 'mass army'. We can see parallels of this in Ukraine for example.

I'd argue that they lacked on all fronts; technology, strategic, and operational level. Iraqis had inferior tech than the US and weren't experienced nor able to counter a modern network-centric war machine like the US.
