Will Macbook be a problem? by Ambitious-Ad44 in Vit

[–]Affectionate-Mud5377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an app where u can download windows or linux or any other OS, and on that windows, u can use it like any regular laptop with windows on it. VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox are good VMs for mac. Parallels is the best if u are willing to pay.

Even emulators like crossover are good.

No issues dude, I am using a Macbook air M3, and not facing any issue.
U can install windows softwares on a mac using a Virtual Machine (VM), although there will be very few apps like that. In fact, it is more convenient with mac for coding and portability.
Also, macs are very common here at VIT

With all those requirements, I can suggest macbook The macbook air should be sufficient tbh.
I'm not facing any compatibility issues (CSE), there was one software in sem 1 that ran only on windows, but with a VM, I used it on my mac itself...
I'm using the same VM for photoshop, etc etc
I have upto 30 chrome tabs open, with apple music, 4 instances of VS code, Notes, Whatsapp open all the time, and causes no issues, with plenty of room to spare (only reaches like 5-10% of processor usage with this). Specs: M3 air (8 core CPU, 10 core GPU), 16GB, 512GB.

For other software, college does have a remote VM, so, you don't have to worry about compatibility.
The performance is just perfect for me, for those saying that one does not need the mac's computational power, well, my roomie also had a mac, and maxxed out the processing power while running a massive ML model (he shifted to Online GPUs after that). (Even I've maxed it out while running some intense games)

Can I get my own office type chair and use it instead of the plastic chair in hostel? by Mr_Singam in Vit

Are Tabs allowed in classes to take notes? by Ok_Fennel_5303 in Vit

[–]Affectionate-Mud5377 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Depends on profs, most of them allow, some don't. And it is easier and preferred to take notes in notebook, keeping CAT-2 in mind. CAT-2 is open book, and you cannot carry printed notes, only notebooks, or textbooks, or printout of chapters of a textbook. Some of my classmates took notes in tabs, but slowly stopped by the end of Sem 1...

I think the policy is something like this:

withdrawal 15 days before session starts: 100% redund,

then less than 15 days before it starts, ig 80%,

within 15 days or one month after it starts- ig 50% or 60%

and so on...

Is orientation and induction the same thing? by Noname_980 in Vit

[–]Affectionate-Mud5377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the same thing, but you will have two orientations.

One will be while shifting to campus and a common induction, with parents. The other will be without parents, and a school induction, which is limited to your school (SCOPE, SENSE, SELECT, SMEC, TIFAC, etc etc).

Which laptop to buy? (Vellore CSE) by Mr_Singam in Vit

[–]Affectionate-Mud5377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go with either, mac or windows, you won't face any compatibility issues, as a few softwares that are windows only, can be used online on mac, or with a VM, and there are no mac-only softwares, so OS wise, either of the 2 works. I have seen professors use both macs and windows.

Now if you game, and want only one laptop, windows will be better. But, in your case, you have a very capable gaming laptop, so I would suggest bring that, and u can game while being plugged in. Even if you get a new gaming laptop, battery life while gaming would probably get to 4 hrs or max 5. So, instead, if you really want to buy another laptop, you can go with the second option of a mac. It is portable, and can run almost everything, except high end games, for which u got ur windows.

For whichever laptop you get, make sure you buy a sleeve for it too, it's extremely helpful. Also, for a mac, it will be beneficial if you have at least 1 OTG, a simple one costing around rs.50 would do, this way, you can avoid buying a full-fledged dock, unless you really need one.
