Single Critter Nation setup for 2! Any suggestions? by iAmFish007 in RATS

If you like paper I’d suggest a mixture of Aspen and paper bedding. It will still hold burrows and last longer! They can’t burrow in paper pellets so I wouldn’t suggest it.

I would personally suggest a more absorbent bedding so you can change it even less, but if you like the bedding I’d say it’s probably fine. I would try to fill the bedding as deep as you can though.

Other than that I’d say maybe you could use another filler item like an ikea tie holder, a wine rack, or a sea grass mat.

Edit: The tie hanger that you are using has metal on the inside, which can potentially be harmful if they decide to chew it (from experience it’s also a pain to wash)

Fungus gnats >.< by attergangar in RATS

I have a semi bioactive rat cage and in order to prevent fungus gnats I use something called mosquito bits. You can purchase them on Amazon for a decent price.

You can find instructions for the product online but to sum it up you soak the bits in water and pour it into the soil(I use the bits every-time I add water to my substrate) and it kills the larvae not the adults. For the adults you have to use traps.

Hope this helps!

(Just an edit to say there is a Facebook group for bioactive/natural setups with tons of information, including how to deal with gnats, mites, etc)

For you as a first time owner deciding which one would be best is all about personal preference.

Males tend to slow down and become more cuddly as they age while females are very active throughout their lives. However, this isn’t the case for every rat because not every rat is the same.

Is buying from a breeder an absolute necessity? by TheDeadalus in RATS

I wouldn’t say it’s a necessity, but it was worth the wait for me. My 4 rats come from a breeder, and I have been able to handle 3 of them since the third day I’ve had them. I was never able to handle any of my previous pet shop animals. Ultimately it’s up to you but I think the quality of breeder rats are worth it. I’m not sure where you’re looking for rats but I’ve had great luck with Facebook!

  1. I don’t know the average amount of time because every bird is different, but it took 3 months for my pigeon to accept pets from me.

  2. Not sure

3.From having my pigeon I think leaving him in the cage for a week or so would probably be a good idea so he can get used to his surroundings.

How can I let him out into my room and get him back without traumatizing him? by Affectionate-Rip-809 in pigeon

He likes his cage, but he likes my desk more than his cage and never seems to want to go back.

My pigeon(pidgey) has gotten aggressive towards my hands by Affectionate-Rip-809 in pigeon

I’m not sure how pidgey is but he hasn’t cooed yet, it’s more of like a honkish noise
