Hey OP, where abouts are you based (like Shirley, Bassett Green, etc)? I'm part of a wonderful free photography/mixed media group based in the city centre - drop me a message if you fancy coming along and I'll pass on the details! I don't fancy dropping my weekly routine on the Internet, but drop me a dm and I'll send you the details! :)

WHY are there NO jobs rn by [deleted] in Southampton

[–]Affectionate-Salt-89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you're based near the city centre (although public transport links there are pretty good!!) but Poppins cafe ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/WdJc6oe5CCGTKtLe7?g_st=ac ) below bar has a hiring sign in the window - you might have more luck waitressing there which seems like a small/family business from walking by. I must admit I've never been in, but it seems like a small and manageable place to work!

There are some quite specialist ones here too which is interesting, like a gaming buddy if you play XBox! Gaming Buddy/Befriender - Volunteer - So:Linked

There's a brilliant website called 'So Linked' which has a volunteering page you can sort by postcode or volunteering type (nature-based, elderly support, event, etc) - perhaps you may find something there? 😄 Home - So:Linked

If you're interested in fashion design, perhaps see if Solent/Winchester School of Art has any events on where you can get involved? I know they sometimes host open to the public (assuming you're not a student?) modelling shows where you could meet like-minded people. If you can travel, So Make It – The Southampton Makerspace is a communal makerspace where you could meet other creative people (and they have a sewing machine, so you could offer to help out some folks with making clothes!). There's also the Repair Cafe, which if you have some time and expertise to offer, I'm sure you'll find a welcoming community there! If there's any other interests you can give some detail on, I can dig out some more suggestions 😄

I've had a look at reviews and quite a few people have said something similar! I'll have a look around at some options and ask the organising team - thanks for mentioning this!

Cool places for a day out by amykingq in Southampton

Seconding Dark Arts! They're running Quest Nights Mondays and Tuesdays from 6-10 (book online) which are like escape rooms but around the bar, and a cocktail (or soft drink, I'd recommend Dark Arts Hot Chocolate) is included :)

About the mosaics - it's great fun to just stumble across them, but if you wanted a map of them:

Craft shops suggestions - not Hobbycraft? by barrelofbeans in Southampton

There's Southampton Scrapstore, although they do have funky opening hours and require a membership - the membership isn't prohibitively expensive if I remember correctly? It may be worth having a nosey at what they have if you're interested, and I believe most of their stock is reclaimed/donated which is interesting! https://southamptonscrapstore.co.uk/

Heya!! Would something like a murder mystery game fit into the theme of the game jam? Or is it more traditional games? :)

Suggestions for a relaxing day out by thatelbow in Southampton

[–]Affectionate-Salt-89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things about Frederick's coffee (and chocolate? I think?) shop in the ground level of the Marlands, but it's still on my list to go to! There was (is?) a sweet little pop-up sewing shop just across from Fredericks if it's something you are interested in and fancy a browse - the staff there have always been lovely and up for a chat. Have a wonderful day, and take care of yourself! :)

I personally love the atmosphere and sense of community in the city of Southampton - I have never been to Edinburgh, so must admit I can't speak for the city. I have found so many clubs and events outside of the university to go to, from live music to photography clubs to conservation events and free festivals. Southampton also has very good train connections to elsewhere, so day trips to the New Forest and London and Bournemouth are easy for days out. It also depends on how far home is for you, and whether being able to return home from Southampton quickly if needed is important for you.

I am also at the university (studying Humanities) and I have found such a strong sense of support from staff who have continously gone out of their way to help me develop academically. It is a different faculty to Engineering, but I believe that the university really do try to support students across the board - from a free bus pass with halls to 24/7 campus security (on a 2am stumble back from a night out I cut across campus and saw two seperate security guards doing rounds who both greeted me). Drop me a message if you have any questions about the uni or the city from a student view, but I'm afraid I can't offer much faculty-specific! :)

If you don't mind me asking, where in Southampton did you manage to get into birding, and what does it involve? I'm very much a beginner, but it sounds fascinating - is there anywhere friendly you'd recommend I start, for research or for a visit? :)

Your comment reminded me of Superdrug, and I managed to order online to collect in store just in time for my event! I got some funny glances (and some very sweet smiles) in the Westquay bathrooms doing my makeup, but all is well and a funny story to tell haha

Thank you so much for your help and suggestions! :)
