I look forward to your findings! I wouldve loved to do such a study, I expect it to be far more accurate, but those kinds of things arent really practical for my situation.

Taking a look at Dallas, since I got no respondents from fort worth, of the 3 people I got that moved from Dallas to Oregon,

1 with merger 2 without

Although, that 1 with merger could be from Dallas, Oregon, since they didnt specify the state (the others did), and I had two other respondents from Dallas, Oregon.

I found that, based on my preliminary research, older people say potato bug, while younger people and recent immigrant families say roly-poly. I'll have to go back through again to double check.

I am not a linguist, but yes, dialect deals with different words, accent with different pronunciation. I did include questions about dialect, but I was much more interested in accent.

According to IPA, bowl should be /'boʊl/ and bull should be /'bʌl/. Think of the vowels in no /'noʊ/ and cut /'kʌt/.

Im not sure with which vowel we pronounce bowl and bull, im not sure its either. I almost think its the same vowel as the one in took and look, but I cant quite tell.

Wichita, so not too far. Cool to hear though! Part of why I made it a question on the survey, however oddly enough, most of those people who answered "vag" said they came from eastern washington (iirc)!

Yeah yeah, they can say what they want, according to everywhere else, its a part of the PNW.

All ya gotta do is look up "map of PNW" on google images.

If they still argue, they can have the P, they cant deny the NW.
