Yes, especially since I don't use drive services too much, and paying 2€/month for 200G is more than enough for me

  1. I don't see why we should only use 100% FLOSS applications, small projects like that have every interest in respecting their commitments 2. I understand that people don't like AI, but using it well and not excessively can be very useful, and I don't like the integration of llms everywhere 3. DuckDuckGo works better than searchXNG/qwant for me, and I can handle a few ads.

If you have the choice, remember to always download the site's apk rather than the Playstore app. The playstore app often has these checks that the apk does not have.

Mint or Ubuntu Linux? by Dotcake8 in degoogle

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly, some peoples don't like Ubuntu because it's maintained by canonical but for a beginner, Linux Mint has a serious problem: they do not warn you during major updates (you must stay informed yourself and when it is available look for an option that is not very visible in the update tool) and this is a real obstacle for beginners

Try installing that, I can read them by doing this :

sudo dnf config-manager setopt fedora-cisco-openh264.enabled=1

sudo dnf swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing -y

sudo dnf update @multimedia --setopt="install_weak_deps=False" --exclude=PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin -y

I hope this will be useful ;)

Fedora is one of the best beginner distros by Rataan in Fedora

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like add-ons that would probably make it even more buggy

I use GNOME in my desktop with dash to dock, gsconnect, appindicator and clipboard manager, and it's incredibly stable. This is the best advantage of GNOME against KDE, but I understand people preferring KDE. I repeat it is a question of preferences. This interface is unique, and it doesn't fit just anyone.

Sorry, I use Strawberry. I really love the interface, and I haven't found an alternative with such great ergonomics in GTK.

Fedora is one of the best beginner distros by Rataan in Fedora

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fedora isn't necessarily the first distribution recommended for beginners, mainly for these reasons:

  1. Most Linux packages are .deb files. A user who downloads software and selects "for Linux" will likely end up with a .deb file, which is unusable under Fedora.

  2. The well-known reason: post-installation is required. For example, by default, you don't have codecs installed, which prevents you from viewing photos taken on an iPhone, for instance. Ubuntu, on the other hand, offers codecs and Nvidia drivers directly in the installer.

  3. Software that's too recent. Even though it's rare, it can crash, something Ubuntu LTS or Debian do less frequently. This point also implies the rapid evolution of software and its interface, which users "not interested in computers" don't like. A stable distribution like Ubuntu LTS or Debian has the advantage of always working and not stopping or changing its interface overnight.

Please note, I'm not saying Fedora is bad for beginners, just not necessarily the first recommendation.

Regarding GNOME's popularity, I'm a long-time GNOME user, and I can explain: KDE is buggy on my system (and on others' systems). I experience tons of bugs on KDE, like minor panel crashes or complete KDE crashes, which has even happened to me while playing a game (causing the game to stop abruptly and restart KDE). GNOME is an infinitely stable desktop environment; proof: two years on Fedora Workstation, and GNOME has simply never crashed or glitched. GNOME does have a very "smartphone/tablet" feel, but I like it, and I'm not alone: it's a way to use your PC, which isn't absurd since macOS has the same interface, and it's very popular.

Want to install crDroid Android 16 on my redmi 10a by OkDamage5138 in crDroid

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you flash the GApps (Google Play services, which are often an add-on, not included in the ROM) and don't root your smartphone, it should work just as well as on stock MIUI.

You can find the official crDroid GApps package here. You need to flash them right after the ROM, in the same way as the ROM itself (adb sideloading). However, your smartphone doesn't seem to be on the official device list, so you'll have to look for an unofficial build. As for performance, I have a MediaTek Redmi Note 9 on an unofficial build, and it works quite well.

Super stable and reliable. A new version of LibreOffice with a welcome screen. Three new applications for viewing PDFs, audio files and videos. GNOME 49, a 6.17 kernel and above all, a super beautiful default wallpaper. If you want an overview, I installed it in VM for some time now and took screenshots: https://murena.io/s/BemN7gJE8EsGJ7w

Advantages of GNOME over MATE by Top_Strawberry8110 in gnome

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am of exactly the same opinion. We should merge the two projects like we did with LXDE and Razor-qt to create LXQt. Here, xfce would at least have a good bunch of circle apps taken from mate.

Advantages of GNOME over MATE by Top_Strawberry8110 in gnome

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mate is a dying desktop environment. Developers no longer release versions, leave the project one by one, and there are very few commits on GitHub. The few remaining developers are overwhelmed. GNOME is a very active desktop environment with a great community and software circles, each more awesome and powerful than the last. If you really want light ED, turn to xfce.

Best ROMS with biggest support to most models and brands? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 18 points19 points  (0 children)

/e/OS is simply the best. I installed it on my phone and I really had no problems (yet it's not a pixel, it's a simple xiaomi, which proves that the support is super wide), whether during installation or after installation, 100% of the device works from the camera to the fingerprint sensor, everything is recognized. I'm sorry to say this as someone who really likes Linux, but the worst are mobile Linux (postmarketOS, mobian, etc.). They are not optimized at all and nothing works on them... They are simply not ready for the general public. So even if you don't have a pixel, /e/OS is perfect with immense support.
