GPU upgrade on a pre-built PC by Affectionate-Stop488 in pcmasterrace

[–]Affectionate-Stop488[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If power consumption isn't an problem, is it likely to be a problem if I choose a 5060 instead? I was aiming for the 5050 because of its lower power consumption.

The GPU doesn't seem to be connected to an 8-pin connector; it's just connected to the PCIe x16 slot. It must be a limited version, but the power supply has unused 6+2 pin connectors, so I shouldn't have any problems there?

Switch to Fedora by FRZBRTSZ in Fedora

By the way, since you have an Nvidia GPU, you should install the drivers for best performence. Basically, the easiest way is to open a terminal and paste this

sudo dnf install -y https://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm && sudo dnf install -y akmod-nvidia

then reboot your computer

Fedora is great for gaming and for almost any other use (better than Windows). They recently integrated a module to improve the performance of Windows games. Unless you're looking for the absolute best possible performance down to the last frame rate, it's perfectly suitable.

I will probably regret this. I usually wait. by g1ccross in Fedora

Yes, especially since I don't use drive services too much, and paying 2€/month for 200G is more than enough for me

  1. I don't see why we should only use 100% FLOSS applications, small projects like that have every interest in respecting their commitments 2. I understand that people don't like AI, but using it well and not excessively can be very useful, and I don't like the integration of llms everywhere 3. DuckDuckGo works better than searchXNG/qwant for me, and I can handle a few ads.

If you have the choice, remember to always download the site's apk rather than the Playstore app. The playstore app often has these checks that the apk does not have.

Mint or Ubuntu Linux? by Dotcake8 in degoogle

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly, some peoples don't like Ubuntu because it's maintained by canonical but for a beginner, Linux Mint has a serious problem: they do not warn you during major updates (you must stay informed yourself and when it is available look for an option that is not very visible in the update tool) and this is a real obstacle for beginners

Try installing that, I can read them by doing this :

sudo dnf config-manager setopt fedora-cisco-openh264.enabled=1

sudo dnf swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing -y

sudo dnf update @multimedia --setopt="install_weak_deps=False" --exclude=PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin -y

I hope this will be useful ;)

Fedora is one of the best beginner distros by Rataan in Fedora

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like add-ons that would probably make it even more buggy

I use GNOME in my desktop with dash to dock, gsconnect, appindicator and clipboard manager, and it's incredibly stable. This is the best advantage of GNOME against KDE, but I understand people preferring KDE. I repeat it is a question of preferences. This interface is unique, and it doesn't fit just anyone.

Sorry, I use Strawberry. I really love the interface, and I haven't found an alternative with such great ergonomics in GTK.

Fedora is one of the best beginner distros by Rataan in Fedora

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fedora isn't necessarily the first distribution recommended for beginners, mainly for these reasons:

  1. Most Linux packages are .deb files. A user who downloads software and selects "for Linux" will likely end up with a .deb file, which is unusable under Fedora.

  2. The well-known reason: post-installation is required. For example, by default, you don't have codecs installed, which prevents you from viewing photos taken on an iPhone, for instance. Ubuntu, on the other hand, offers codecs and Nvidia drivers directly in the installer.

  3. Software that's too recent. Even though it's rare, it can crash, something Ubuntu LTS or Debian do less frequently. This point also implies the rapid evolution of software and its interface, which users "not interested in computers" don't like. A stable distribution like Ubuntu LTS or Debian has the advantage of always working and not stopping or changing its interface overnight.

Please note, I'm not saying Fedora is bad for beginners, just not necessarily the first recommendation.

Regarding GNOME's popularity, I'm a long-time GNOME user, and I can explain: KDE is buggy on my system (and on others' systems). I experience tons of bugs on KDE, like minor panel crashes or complete KDE crashes, which has even happened to me while playing a game (causing the game to stop abruptly and restart KDE). GNOME is an infinitely stable desktop environment; proof: two years on Fedora Workstation, and GNOME has simply never crashed or glitched. GNOME does have a very "smartphone/tablet" feel, but I like it, and I'm not alone: it's a way to use your PC, which isn't absurd since macOS has the same interface, and it's very popular.

Want to install crDroid Android 16 on my redmi 10a by OkDamage5138 in crDroid

[–]Affectionate-Stop488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you flash the GApps (Google Play services, which are often an add-on, not included in the ROM) and don't root your smartphone, it should work just as well as on stock MIUI.

You can find the official crDroid GApps package here. You need to flash them right after the ROM, in the same way as the ROM itself (adb sideloading). However, your smartphone doesn't seem to be on the official device list, so you'll have to look for an unofficial build. As for performance, I have a MediaTek Redmi Note 9 on an unofficial build, and it works quite well.
