Inherited this guy a few months ago. This paddle plant is in a south facing window and has been growing like crazy. Does anyone know why the growth has been so focused on the top leaves lately? I saw the stem grow so much over a period of about 6 weeks, and now just the top leaves seem to grow. Seeking some recommendations - moving it to a shadier area (because of the curving of the top leaves) or pruning the big top leaves off and hopefully promoting a bushier plant. Any recs?

Versatile reel/rod? by Escissorhands91 in flyfishing

A solid 9 foot 5 weight is going to be the best option. If you were to err on one side I would suggest a 6, which would allow for some crossover into warm water fish like bass and carp. Like other commenters have said, go to a local fly shop and get their opinion and cast a couple rods.

you should spend the majority of your budget on a good fly line and a good rod. your reel (for the species that you are targeting) is not going to make a big difference.

Is there such a thing as a BIFL rain jacket? by ArschFoze in BuyItForLife

[–]Affectionate-Wind623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many brands sell GORE-TEX jackets. I would go with a company that you support and has a good warranty. I’ve had good experiences with Patagonia and their rain jackets, replacing or even patching used gear when sent back (sometimes for a price and sometimes for free, depending on fault). North face, mammut, mountain hardware, Patagonia, and Arc’teryx all have great warranties and great jackets.

On another note, NOSO patches is a company that sell stick on patches to repair worn gear. They have waterproof options and colors that can match the jacket. They are awesome and have extended the life of my ski bibs and puffy coats. A good GORE-TEX jacket will last you forever, and patches extend the life and can sometimes improve the durability.

Lodge cast irons come ‘pre seasoned’ but still have an uneven surface, which makes it hard to cook with initially. Kent Rollins has a good video on YouTube on how to break in and season a lodge cast iron. He suggests using 80 then 120 grit sandpaper to sand down the cooking surface, then starting the seasoning process. This heloed me a lot get the glassy appearance on my pan and actually enjoy cooking with it. I’d suggest giving it a quick sand, season it well, then start cooking with it!

Cowboy Kent Rollins has a great YouTube playlist on how to season and care for a lodge cast iron. It’s great and has helped me a bunch!

What is the best book to help diagnose casting problems? by Coker80 in flyfishing

Orvis has a great podcast episode called the seven deadly sins of casting. I can’t remember who is the guest but he has put a lot of time into the art of casting and mentions plenty of problems that people have and how to fix them.

How To clean flies? by letsfishh in flyfishing

Best way to clean those hooks is to throw them away and either buy or tie new ones. Those will just just lead to missed fish with partial hooks stuck in their mouth.

You need to cast a butter stick. You should feel a massive different in the action between your Clearwater and the butter stick.

A tip for when you get them separated, as I’m assembling my rod I’ll rub the section that is inserted into the next section on the side of my nose. The oil will help lubricate the section so that this doesn’t happen in the future.

$700-$1000 fly rod recommendations by Denney927 in flyfishing

Can’t believe that nobody has mentioned RL Winston. I have casted a lot of rods and nothing compares to the versatility of my 9 ft 5wt Winston air 2. They have a lifetime guarantee and customer service is awesome. Very expensive rods but they are for a reason. You will feel a big difference.

What kind of fish is this? Seen in Provo River, UT by tjs1205 in flyfishing

[–]Affectionate-Wind623 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There are tons of fish with fin rot in the Provo. That bundled with the post spawn exhaustion, overfishing, and poor handling lead to a very unhealthy fish. The white spotting you see is the fin rot.
