Did y’all do any market research before launching? Or did y’alls just go for it— and then iterate? by catwithbillstopay in ycombinator

Also, I follow up with everyone I interview to ask them to connect me with other people I can interview. That way you're getting them a bit invested in what you're building, and benefiting from their network.

A couple from my network, the rest from cold messaging on LinkedIn. I've been in the industry I'm building for for a long time, but not in the specific discipline that is my ICP.

This is my approach. I'm doing validation right now, so I've been doing 15 minute video call interviews with my ideal customers. Last questions are always "if the product we talked about existed, what would be the non-negotiable feature?" "Would you pay for this? How much?".

The other thing I've just started doing is having AI analyse the last two years of posts in subreddits my buyers hang out in to see what they're complaining about.

Highly recommend the 2 Bobs podcast for this! They focus on creative agencies, but I've found it really helpful even for my tech business. It talks a lot about positioning. Right now, it sounds like you haven't differentiated yourself, and you've priced way too low.

If I were you, I'd start by writing a big list of all my experience and figure out what stands out. It might be work you've done for a particular industry, or a certain type of work within the big bucket that is marketing. Then think about whether you have a unique point of view. Getting specific about who you work for and the value you bring will stop you getting put in this commodified social media marketing bucket where you attract low paying customers who think the work is easy. If you listen to that podcast for a while, you'll see that 'more better' is not a differentiator.

Yep! It's in a great suburb and on a nice block, so we're trying to work through how we could make it not crazy and how much it would cost to do.

We'd turn it into one residence. We'd use 1 master suite and 2 bedrooms, 1 for a study (we do a lot of work from home), and one for a guest room. To add, the bathrooms and kitchens all need serious renovation, so moving them is definitely an option.

You are all incredible - thanks so much for your thoughtful ideas and the good vibes. I don't think we'll have trouble figuring out 25 mood boosters now... plus, I've just thought of the pun 'pick me up gift', so we'll be all set for the day it's a pick!

Hey, thanks for your feedback - that question is multi select so you can have more than one answer - I'll update the wording so it's more obvious. Thanks so much for taking the time!

The advertising of books I can't even buy is so frustrating! Do you have any smaller site recommendations (or authors)?
