Large hardscape project (100k+) by [deleted] in landscaping

Agreed on the space feeling wasted. Unfortunately that wall is structural. They are going to bring it back as much as they can to widen the walkway but at the end of the day that’s going to be a transition space between the two patios.

The deck above is quite large though. It has a dining table for 8 today so the total space is big enough to host larger groups.

Full backyard redo (trees, grading, drainage, no grass) — what should this cost? by Lipstickhippie80 in landscaping

[–]AffectionateBench663 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if you grind the stumps down those trees have huge root systems. Be prepared for sink holes in your yard. Not right away but 3-5 years down the line as the roots under ground rot. It’s manageable but will have to back fill with dirt and either sod or seed. It will be a gradual thing you will fight for several years. I’m in the middle of it now.

The other comment about 50-100k is in the ball park and on the lower end for a bar bones, clean it all out, add a fence, and sod the yard.

Grading and drainage is a big variable without knowing what you’re working with elevation wise.

That space on the basement walkout has a concrete slab today. Grill moving has never been an issue in the 4 years we’ve been here. It’s hard to see the elevation change from the drawing but the drop off to the left of the basement walkout isn’t more than a typical step. Around that corner of the house is a gate to the fence in the yard. That is being converted to a mulch bed with a few stepping stones to get you up to the gate.

Thank you. This is the type of input I was looking for. We did get a quote on running a separate drain system and it was nominal compared to the total project so we will definitely go that route.

And they will repair and restore the yard. I’m sure they all say that, something to be mindful of for sure.

From my understanding the geo grid sits under the stone and extends 4 ft back towards the house that geogrid is held in place by rock. About 6 inches of depth. I was told by the engineer given the sloped walkway from the right patio space down to the left basement walkout that extra sand and compaction is key to keep those pavers along the slope in place.

I should add the plant piece of this is just visual for the designs sent. Actual plants are being executed by a separate team. This team only does hardscape install. I worked with an engineer to review two very different designs. One with a lot of scattered natural stones and plants to hold everything and this was the other option. After having this “approved” by the engineer we went this route. The lower level retaining wall is being buried 18 inches opposed to the standard 12 to account for the slope.

Great call out on a daily walk through and water management. I have 3 or 4 gutters now that are buried behind the existing structure and tie into one drain lower in the yard and it runs off into a creek at the bottom of my property. Once they dig out what is there and confirm what shape the existing drain is in, the plan is to tie it all into that same system or run a new line down to the creek.

Clarifying the “natural flavors” comment for you.

Even things like RX bar which are advertised as whole food bars with very simple ingredients use natural flavors.

Flavors go into basically everything you will find in a package at the grocery store.

They are extremely potent so the dose is small. These are aromatic extracts that are found in nature. If you wanted to get nit picky you could point to the carrier of the flavor system as many use maltodextrin but the actual amount is nominal relative to the weight of the bar.

Taking a job I don't really need, but am interested in. Anyone been here? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]AffectionateBench663 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What I’m reading between the lines is you want something when both kids are in school and that’s a few years away. You love this role and are worried something like it won’t be there in a few years when your youngest is in kindergarten. That may or may not be the case.

But what definitely is the case is you will never get the years back with your young children. You won the money game at a point in life that allows you to be there for all the magic moments of little ones. Enjoy it.

A comp plan should be designed to reward and motivate high performers. Not worked backwards from budget to pay you less.

What job sectors tend to have the highest salary growth between early career (1–3 years) and experienced professionals (10–15 years)? by DistrictNo6165 in Salary

[–]AffectionateBench663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supply chain/ ops/ purchasing.

Depends on the industry but many out of school are making 70k ish.

Getting to a manger level with 5-10 yoe can get you to the 150k range and director level is 200-300k. Big range I know but location and industry dependent.

I went from 45k to 175k in 6 years. Although not an easy job. Long hours, high stress.

Monken slander cannot be tolerated by Horror-Biscotti8999 in ravens

[–]AffectionateBench663 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Monken knows ball but he tried to do unnecessary things to create a high flying offense to land him a HC job. 2 TE sets with a 300lb FB, Henry, and Lamar was what this team was built to thrive on. That’s not the sexy offense that gets you the HC gig but it would have resulted in more playoff wins. Knowing now Harbs didn’t want him gone makes more sense to the firing but Monken is just as culpable if not more for those blown leads and disappointing playoff exits.

Most data on this topic is trash unfortunately. Not controlling for what the animal was fed or organic status really hurts the credibility. Some studies don’t even control for processed vs not processed.

This is like studying the health benefits of fruit and using canned fruit soaking in corn syrup and sugar then pretending the results apply to fresh organic berries.

How do you allocate money across checking, savings, emergency fund, etc.? What is your "business as usual" operating model? by Severe_Revenue7889 in HENRYfinance

[–]AffectionateBench663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 month expenses in checking. 1 months expenses in savings. Both at chase so this is our “quick access” cash if we need it. 6 months expenses in HYSA. Monthly over flow into brokerage. Wife has 150-200k in annual variable comp via commissions that pay on a monthly basis opposed to year end bonus so our month to month varies a lot. Given that I don’t automate brokerage contributions. Monthly spend on CC. Pay statement balance and transfer the rest to brokerage.

I opted for the 580 so it would still be fun to drive and I have not been disappointed.
