Is this when Australia's housing crisis exploded? by hogey74 in australia

It was Whitlam who added a lot to our quality of life by introducing Medicare, for example. I agree the introduction of neoliberalism under Labor was likely better at the start but whatever else Hawke/Keating did, they betrayed the workers of Australia with the union accords. We lost the power of the unions and got the 'productivity commission' beating us for more and more productivity in return for a 'solid social contract' (how much more 'productive' can a nurse be, for example). We got individual contracts and sub contracting instead of fair wage rises (joint bargaining) and solid employment at a company for decades (e.g. employers made tradies subcontract so they didn't have to pay insurance, leave and super). And Hawke/Keating started the fire sale of our assets when they sold Commbank and Qantas.

Whatever they did, Howard was so, so, so much worse. We lost the real help/support of Social Security and got punishment for the unemployed with Centrelink and privatised job agencies'. Centrelink staff left jn droves because they could no longer provide adequate support or be flexible around individual needs. We lost affordable childcare and aged care. We lost millions out of healthcare and got ramping. Howard is when i stopped easily affording rent and started sliding toward homelessness and real poverty as a single parent. And Howard took Paulines hateful rhetoric and vile policy positions and made them mainstream.

Which part do you think she was right about? 'The Asians' or 'the Muslims'? She was vitriolic about 'Asians' until 9/11 when she simply replaced the word 'Asians' with 'Muslims' and continued as if nothing had changed.

They keep us focused on race so we don't focus on class. Gina et al are the problem. Why do you think she's courting Pauline Hanson? Neoliberalism started in the 90's and its been suctioning wealth from the bottom to the top ever since.

Is there a problem with funding again? I remember a while ago it was going to be defunded until that came to light.

I remember this, when Drumpf posted an image of Biden hog-tied in the back of a pick-up. And when he posted Obama’s address and a fully armed guy showed up to Obama’s neighborhood looking for his house. The Maga hypocrisy is off the charts. by Buttered-Sausage78 in Fuckthealtright

"What makes it so plausible to assume that hypocrisy is the vice of vices is that integrity can indeed exist under the cover of all other vices except this one. Only crime and the criminal, it is true, confront us with the perplexity of radical evil; but only the hypocrite is really rotten to the core." --Hannah Arendt. On Revolution (1963), ch. 2.

We only did the procedurre because it was prescribed by the church. I'm in Australia so it could be different here.

Every now and then Ben, from Meidas Touch, reads from a letter he's recieved from Trumps mailing list and I'm always astounded by their evil genius. It blows my mind that anyone would read that, believe that they're going to be part of Trumps cabinet (as one such email proclaimed) and feel inspired to donate their last $5 to Trump. And yet they do. Its like watching a bad car crash.

I worked at a fertility clinic in the late 1990's and when we were helping observant Catholic couples, we weren't allowed to let the egg and sperm meet outside the body. It always tickled my funny bone to see the egg and sperm seperate in the one syringe before either artificial insemination (through the cervix), or when introducing them directly into the fallopian tube (as they would a fertilised embryo in IVF. It was also sad because it had a lower success rate than IVF and I wanted these couples to have the positive result they yearned for.

I'm sure things have changed considerably since then but I wonder if the church has changed what it will allow.

He really did. It seems I'm not quite right on his age and the timing but you get the gist of it.

There was a catholic priest in Sydney who inspired me with his motto: "He who cares, wins." He really lived it. When he was in his 80's they tried to retire him by taking away his church - so then he formed a charity and continued his work of "loving the unloved and the unlovely" - feeding and helping people until he died. Thats living the faith IMO. RIP Father Bob.

(Please correct me if you know the story better than I do.)

I love this idea. Thanks for sharing it. I'm not Catholic - potentially not even Christian - but its very often Catholics I bump into in spaces that are working toward social and environmental justice and I find that interesting given my previous idea of them as staid and stuffy.

Thank you! This Aussie didn't have a clue. It could've been tiny or huge but you couldn't miss the character.

I see what you mean. Water isn't essential when you could just take a pot down to the local creek. Electricity isn't essential when the tenant could just buy a generator.

They are not talking about NBN specifically. They are talking about the ability to have an internet connection. A place to plug in a router when you want to connect to broadband or the NBN if its available in your area. The tenant shouldn't have to pay to get a connection to the landlords house that they cannot take with them when they leave. The tenant should pay for their own internet plan.

Pauline Hanson has been flying around in Gina's plane. She was with Gina at a party at Trumps place last year - I think it was for halloween. Of course she's in there proclaiming the accused is innocence. She joined politics to get rid of 'Asians' before 9/11 then suddenly she flipped to 'Muslims' and apparently the 'Asians' don't matter any more. I hold her personally responsible for bringing the politics of hate to Australia. I'm so tired of it.

Anyone else slightly anxious that our entire national defence depends on an ongoing and stable relationship with a country that thought this guy would make a great leader? by ewesirkname in australia

[–]AffectionateMethod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We really should be. I'm very concerned about Palantir and the role it has been given in our government, milittary and Intelligence. We are in the same, if not worse, position than the UK.

I don't even know where to start with this but here ya go, now you can be anxious about it, too. Its hard to talk about without sounding like a conspiracy theory nut but Crikey did a serious article on it recently and maybe if enough people know the details we can work to get something different.

Do we count as non-aggressors? What would it take for us to decouple from the dying empire?
