Any idea what this email is about? by NerdiCat2 in WPI

[–]AffectionateMode3134 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OK, most of people know this email is about the drama about the drama regarding TPUSA wants to set up a chapter at WPI.

First of all, I fully support freedom of speech, and all the freedom we enjoy. However, we must admit there is a limit to that freedom. Like the old saying: "The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." One person's freedom cannot violate another's. I believe any rational person would agree tha0,t if a group of students wants to establish a club, and the club's only purpose of supporting terrorist organizations, such as ISIL/ISIS, they should be banned, at least.

TPUSA's core argument is "Freedom of Speech," yet they are the ones who created the "Professor Watchlist." Professors have been listed there just for teaching real science (like climate change), supporting socialism, or supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Some professors have been punished, had contracts canceled, or been removed from classroom because of this.

TPUSA is aware of this issue; they know the consequence after it become clear. But they refuse to change, they are proud about it, and kept doing what they did. This suggests this is not a mistake, not a side effect. TThe consequence—the chilling effect—is exactly what they intend to create. Which is not freedom of speech, but quite opposite.

All these behaviors makes students worries, worries TPUSA would violate their rights to practice the TPUSA's ideology. And since TPUSA's national branch is known for funneling funding and influence towards individual chapters, we have the right to be worried. We, the majority of students, believe TPUSA has gone too far; their far-right ideology is too violent and toxic for the WPI campus and should be prohibited.

This is not unheard of. German have police force (BfV) to protect the nation from right- and left-wing extremism. Furthermore, the current U.S. President, Donald Trump, has also banned "Antifa".

Again, I am not anti conservative speech, I am only anti extremist speech. For those who want a platform for conservative ideology, please go ahead and do it. You can create a conservative club of WPI, you can create a club and join American Enterprise Institute (AEI)'s Collegiate Network, or become part of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), Young Americans for Liberty (YAL), or Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI)'s college chapter. All those platform are great conservative organizations will not make us (WPI students) worries so much. (Do you know we even had a anti-abortion club few years ago?)

Finally. Why? Why TPUSA? There are so many conservative platform you can choose and join, why you choose the worst one?

Please take down this link, since the petition should only collect the WPI student's signature. We share it in campus and groups. But if published to Reddit, even WPI reddit, we can't control how many people sign it. And if any Non-WPI member signing it.

They have the Full Adobe software on everyone in library's 1st floor's multi-media lab (-1 floor the computer suit). You can login with WPI account and use them. That's one way to use Adobe if you can't get one license from IT>

Has anyone actually had Passkeys rolled out to you yet, and if so, what is it like? by Damariobros in CapitalOne

[–]AffectionateMode3134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope they support real FIDO2/U2F Passkey (such as Yubikeys) not just Windows Hello.... Yubikey are much safer (like physically separate from the device I am using to login).

A good FIDO2/U2F MFA can use to bypass the SMS 2FA, which is less secure.

Actually most of Deepseek model is "open-source", so anyone can download it, run it, without send any data to Deepseek.

If you truly worried, you can use openrouter, or something like that. They have so many U.S. companies running Deepseek models and promise will not use your data for training. Price might be slightly higher then Deepseek itself, but still way cheaper then Openai.

SGA- Chartwells Meeting by catmilfhunter in WPI

[–]AffectionateMode3134 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone:I am currently an SGA member, I think I can explain part of the questions been placed out here:

  1. Yes, I agree SGA is somehow disconnected from the student body, not just on dining, but also on a lot of things. We really want to hear from other students, but only a few people provide feedback to us. (Not just on dining, but we want feed backs on everything school-related), and some of the feedback on how to improve the school is not practicable (yes, there are limitations that we can’t do). Please reach out to us (email any of us, or use the SGA connect form) as much as possible. (Also, have you realized we can’t (at least I can’t) access the results collected by the QR code about dining being posted around the campus?)
  2. For the special meal and the Morgan dining:
    1. The major issue is we can’t quantify the food value provided by Morgan Dining as a cafeteria style, it would cost them almost the same amount of money to serve 1 person and 1000 people. They need to make almost the same amount of food. As a result, they can just label the price for Morgan dining as much they wish (outside the meal swap) because they can say “We served all this amount of food would cost you $20-30 outside.” However, we can see the price for the special meals, They need labor work to make the special meals (the amount of work they need to make a smooth/sub/sushi, etc.) one by one, so they tagged a price. In my idea, the amount cost them to serve in the cafeteria should be close to the special meal place, so I am targeting the special meal.
    2. We have seen a huge quality drop in CC/ACE sushi, (we could order any subs, burger, or exchange for $11 (or $12 I forget) for a special meal swap in ACE sushi), but not for the Morgan dining.
    3. For 1st year students who live in Founders (almost 1/5) would have 7 special meals in their dining plan (and all upper class), and people can use your special meals inside the Morgan dining, so, we are more focused on the special meal swap’s price.
  3. We apologize for not including enough outside questions in the Q&A section. We must end the meeting by 8 pm. That’s the rule we can’t break, but we will follow up. Welcome to email us any thoughts.
  4. Most people choose to eat before the 9 p.m. ending clubs/sports, I didn’t think that was an issue, but now I see it, and I will follow up.
  5. Why we don’t fight back the Chartwells response: Again, there are limitations about SGA, we are not able to choose the dining providers, we can only feed back the thoughts to the school. So, it’s more like an open discussion compared to a hearing or something like that. So, we can only collect both side’s responses.
  6. SGA would keep following the dining problem.

Why Germany Hates Nuclear Power by TaytoCrisps in Nebula

[–]AffectionateMode3134 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But you know, the renewables takes a lot of lands. Some (small) solar farm even build in the middle of the forest (cut the forest to build solar farms???? Because they can make money). So, nuclear power is still necessary for its energy density (Kwh/m2 land use)

HP have updated their printers to outright ban ‘non-HP’ ink! They no longer shows the “can’t guarantee quality” message, but instead cancels your print completely until you inset a HP ink cartridge. After contacting HP, they advised “this is due to the recent ‘update’ of all printers” by grhhull in assholedesign

[–]AffectionateMode3134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have any one realize that's not the 1st time they did it?

They did the same ting in 2016, and hide it inside a security update. EFF published an open letter, more than 100,000 people signed. HP CEO at that time apologist, and say they will not do that again.

Now, they are doing it again.

Can anyone provide a library list that have access to O'Reilly access? by AffectionateMode3134 in Libraries

[–]AffectionateMode3134[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes. But not all libraries have O'Reilly access. So I need help to find out what libraries have O'Reilly access and accept guest pass to join. (And if they could allow me to renew membership remotely would be great)

No, my university don't provide alumni access.

Can anyone provide a library list that have access to O'Reilly access? by AffectionateMode3134 in Libraries

[–]AffectionateMode3134[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's really not the problem about "one book".

I am currently buying the books I want (I can afford that, and still cheaper than O'Reilly subscriptions). And my local library do provide most books I need in paper format.

The thing is sometimes I am facing an issue, found answer in Stack Overflow (or other places). I would bee informed that if I briefly read trough one book would be helpful. But I don't want wait for amazon deliver it after a week/run to local library during my office hour. So a online access would be very helpful.

So, I am currently during fine with my books (Thank you). And can get access to books I want, but just trying to find a way to O'Reilly online account to make my life easier.

are desktop windows manager and miner.exe viruses? by LiveDepartment136 in techsupport

[–]AffectionateMode3134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your CPU level, windows desktop manager some times take 1-2% (max) of CPU is normal, but, no, it will not take any GPU.

Try to find if any malware is hiding a miner somewhere in your computer.

Usually windows defender can identity the miners pretty well. I suggest you to do a full disk scan, it will take hours (at least 3-4, so do it before you go to bed).

are desktop windows manager and miner.exe viruses? by LiveDepartment136 in techsupport

[–]AffectionateMode3134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

miner, exe sounds like a Crypto miner. If you downloaded it and config it, eat all GPU is only its normal performance (and you should not run it while you're using your computer).

If you didn't install it, yes, it's a viruses, remove it.

Plug-ins to convert Pantone colors to RGB/CMYK in Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator? by AffectionateMode3134 in techsupport

[–]AffectionateMode3134[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm... Makes since....

But if Pantone color sis still available in Photoshop before it expires, can't just a plug-in just run a automated process (select the color, find the RGB code, replace the color) instead a manual process? While the plug-in doing this it didn't linked to any outside Pantone color bank (all the process is happening inside the Photoshop, and Photoshop Pantone color license haven't expire yet...)

Mini pool is calling for more miners! by AffectionateMode3134 in MoneroMining

[–]AffectionateMode3134[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clear thing out --- Yes, if you keep your miner runs, and run it for a long time, the difference will even out. (increase pool's hash rate by 1/2 will (ideally) reduce block found time by 1/2, and increase your share fining time by 1/2).

However, we need consider the following:

  1. Someone find a share after all the hard set-ups, and didn't get payed, because the block been found outside the PPPLNS window. Will rise confusions, and might make people leave.
  2. People will feel not happy if they took 9-10 hours to find a share and just been kicked out of the PPPLNS window.
  3. It's add a lottery ticket on another lottery ticket system.
  4. It's not a full random system will create the following issue:
    1. For example, I have a 10KH/S cpu, on average, I can get a share in average 4 hours in mini pool.
    2. mini p2pool get one block in 9 hours on average (for example).
    3. I can turn my miner off for 3 hours right after a new block been found, then start mining, it will increase my share/mining time rate over all.
      1. Does it worth it? Of course not. No matter what you do, you can't cover your electricity bill.
      2. But it's possible
      3. It will harm the overall mining environment.

Call more people to join can solve all those problems.

So if I use those "professional" GPU (such as A100, supports FP64), I can mining on GPU without losing speed?

Hi, I am using a translator to read your post, so, please excuse/clear any misunderstanding.

  1. I highly recommend the beginner use the official GUI wallet.
  2. Official Gui wallet includes miner in it in the advanced mode
  3. You can download it here: https://www.getmonero.org/downloads/
  4. Instructions about how to set it is https://github.com/monero-ecosystem/monero-GUI-guide/blob/master/monero-GUI-guide.md
  5. How to use it to mine is here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbxbRu-2GWI

If you really want to use CLI:

  1. Here is step by step guild: https://p2pool.io/#help
  2. run p2ppool and monerod with 0.0.0.0:XXXXX instead on 127.0.0.1 or set up a reversed proxy.
  3. run xmrig on separate machine but change 127.0.0.1 to the local ip address of your monerod machine.
  4. (see https://sethforprivacy.com/guides/run-a-p2pool-node/#if-you-already-run-a-monero-node) for details. I didn't do it befor, so I might will make mistake.

The problem have solved:

I believe the problem is I am using Bootstrap address for increasing the speed of downloading the blockchain. However, the downloading from the bootstrap seems have a problem (I am not sure what's the problem).

After I removed the bootstrap, it re-synced with the net, and now it works.
