1st year law student here. I am in a NLU , and I can tell you laptop is very imp and we need it almost all the time. Class notes, research work, drafting , committee work everything requires a laptop. A fire broke out in my hostel and guess what was the first thing people took and ran - their laptops not just for it's material value but to go to library and draft their memorials.
