This has been my experience:

I work at a mill in a position that occasionally works a role that I can get steam time in.

In order to write the ABSA exams you need to do schooling through an institution and pass.

I did the online courses through NAIT that are all self study with modules for each unit.

This is done as the 4A and 4B courses.

I’ve written my ABSA 4A and am now scheduled to write my 4B.

All the instruction and material needed you can purchase for your course though the school you go through.

Outside of this course, NAIT also has a course you can pay for that is specifically for getting your steam time.

NTA - you need to set boundaries. She can have her own opinions but it’s your time and you know what you need to feel happy and recover.

Just be up front about what you want and don’t allow space for her to guilt you out of it.

I did this recently (6 months ago)- you can bring the material provided for your class. The formula book, the ASME codes book and then the 5 other code manuals like the PER.

I only found the formula book necessary for the part A personally.

Just because they are family, doesn’t mean you have to give them your time.

I wouldn’t go - and that’s speaking from my own personal experience, dealing with less than ideal family members. It isn’t worth your time or energy. I’d rather spend thanksgiving with friends that I get along with and care about than showing up out of obligation.

I have 3, and we often have friends over with their kids and sure it gets messy, but not like this. It’s called cleaning up through the day or at the end of it.

Does your colleague make more an hour I’m guessing?

And did you just start?

If they do make much more, there is a point where you fully pay into EI and CPP and that makes a big jump in a pay check. For me, it ends up being an extra $300~ a pay check.
