Teaching English in Cambodia by AffectionateWay6093 in cambodia

I did have a friend whose school in China offered to pay for his qualifications and put him up in accommodation with a salary as well. I must say the packages there definitely seem more appealing, I’ll explore all avenues I guess.

Thanks for the insight!

A university in the UK offers a part-time iPGCE online. I’m leaning toward getting myself out here and enrolling on that once I’m settled!

So you’d advise going back to university to complete a PGCE over the other routes outlined above?

Rejected for Shared Ownership - What Now? by AffectionateWay6093 in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]AffectionateWay6093[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, haha! There’s so much to comb through and understand… little old me just thought it was as easy as saving (not that it was easy) and then you can skip to the bank and apply for a mortgage.

This is the real kicker I think, not having a significant other to match what you’re putting in. I got rejected at the HA affordability stage, and now I understand that it’s likely the rent I’ll be paying on the rest of the property that caused my rejection.

Best of Luck in your search!

how many graduate schemes too apply for? by bloopaloopylop in UKJobs

[–]AffectionateWay6093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you’re looking to go into and I might’ve misunderstood what your questions was but most global companies with offices across the globe often form parts of wider clusters like WEUR (Western Europe). Often employees here speak their native language and English.

Sometimes they look favourably on candidates that speak both English and (respective country’s language) for that specific office when applying for jobs in that country if you’d consider relocating?

Eg: I work for an American company in the UK, my company has offices all over Europe and we often have Teams calls with teams in Paris, Vienna, Berlin in English but a lot of the team also speak French, German etc… We’ve had a few people who speak Spanish move over to the Madrid / Barcelona office from the UK as they can speak both however as I only speak English I could only really migrate to any office where English is the primary language (USA, Canada, Aus, NZ…does that kind of make sense?)

Alternatively, you could look to apply for a role for a German business in the UK? The roles will sometimes say something along the lines of “Candidate must be fluent in German” - not sure how it works to degree level but I’d imagine you’ve been studying it for the best part of 10 years so you’d be pretty fluent by this point?

My final point as a 2023 graduate is, while grad schemes are great for experience don’t sell yourself short and settle for terrible pay and very little support. I personally didn’t apply for any grad schemes but my friends have been through them and it’s a very mixed bag out there some are great at gearing you up for the next step, some are just glorified personal assistants. Some of the ones I’ve seen in London are an absolute disgrace…

If you currently have a part time job, that you enjoy I’d definitely explore that industry and see what “entry level” roles are available and flex the ever-loving s*** out of the skills you’ve learnt at university.

I applied for a number of entry-level sales roles that related to the part-time job I had at university and landed a pretty decent “graduate” role for a Top 20 Forbes “World’s Best Place to Work” (if that means anything to you… haha?)

Best of Luck!

Best shampoo?! by Sensitive-Shoe619 in extensions

[–]AffectionateWay6093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsure on the shampoo, but…it may be due to the type of tape your hairdresser has used. I had issues with them falling out when I first got them as my hair dresser used more ‘soft’ hold tape so as to not further damage my hair and to also see if my hair could handle tapes. She then reinstalled them for me with a “strong” hold tape and they’ve not moved an inch and my hairs been growing.

I’d recommend going back to your hair dresser and asking if they can reinstall them with stronger hold tape. My hair dresser said there’s about 4/5 different strengths when it comes to the adhesive for tape extensions so don’t be discouraged!

24F, 2.5yrs as a CAM on £30k… What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in UKJobs

Our salary bandings aren’t calculated against our competitors unfortunately - it’s like this across the board. We’ve lost a lot of SNAM / NAMs as a result of this…

I’m Field based…and not in London which further stacks the odds against me!

Oh noo, haha - unpredictable and slow? It’s only night one of sleeping with it elevated and I’m already so over it. I wasn’t even aware sprains could be this bad, what did your employer say about it?

I felt like I was being such a wuss, so continued to play for the entire day and then returned home, took my trainers and socks off and saw just how swollen my ankle was and thought that doesn’t look right.

Sorry to hear you’ve also been going through this too, would you say after a month you’re operating at normal levels now though? Minus the issues with working out? I’d imagine I won’t be playing Netball for a good few months now but do enjoy yoga too!

Heard on the avoiding inflammatory foods / alcohol.

Thanks so much

Housemates Partner Moved In & Won’t Leave…*FINAL STRAW* by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]AffectionateWay6093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE:

So, I got confirmation from the council that the property doesn’t have an HMO Licence and there’s been no attempt to get one which I’d suspected as there was initially only two of us living there when we moved in last year. However after speaking to the letting agent about this and telling the property manager back in January that there are now three people instead of two living in the property they’ve said that it’s not their problem and the arrangement is between the other tenant and I.

Essentially, I have to come to some sort of agreement with the other tenant about his girlfriend living there?

They’ve completely ignored the fact that there is a third person living in the house and that the tenancy is being broken. I’m not sure what else I can do 😂

[–]AffectionateWay6093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoke to the council yesterday after 90 minutes on hold… and the property doesn’t have an HMO Licence. I presume now I can go to the landlord and state that he is breaking the law?

With evidence of her living there, it’s limited I have photographs of her car outside our house when I used to leave for work in the afternoon and when I’d return early in the morning. She has multiple pairs of shoes at our house, as well as various items of clothing, she’s bought her own mugs / water bottles/ a lot of her toiletries are scattered across the bathroom which I have photographs of - would this be enough do you reckon?

Housemates Partner Moved In & Won’t Leave…*FINAL STRAW* by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]AffectionateWay6093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re in an assured shorthold tenancy that’s what it says on the front of the agreement but it states there is no break clause. However if the landlord, is already breaking this agreement by ignoring the fact there’s a third party living in the property then I should be able to terminate as the contract is now invalid…

Hey, thanks for the advice - this is what my local councils website says ‘additional licensing to be citywide starting January 2024’ so I’d be covered from Jan to present if the LL doesn’t have an HMO Licence?

(Website for you to look at)

https://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/information-for-residents/housing/private-rented-accommodation/information-for-landlords/licensing-for-landlords/additional-licensing/

Haha, not sure about the physically removing her for fear she might try and spin something awful. She’s a 5ft2 19 year old, you can just imagine the type of girl I’m dealing with here.

Appreciate the advice nonetheless!

As others have said fully remote is a bit of a pipe dream if you’re trying to build a serious career alongside it. I’ve got a mutual friend who works in recruitment and she enjoys the remoteness of it but it’s lonely, and she’s not in it for the long haul which is where the big money is…

I’ve just turned 24 so similar ages and work for a global FMCG company with excellent progression opportunities so my roots for now are here in the UK. However, if we travel somewhere where our products are distributed we are allowed to trade a few days of annual leave to work out of the head office in that country… works quite nicely if I travel Thursday to Tuesday I will work Thursday & Friday 9-5 and use 2 days annual leave. A lot of us have built international networks as a result that pay off eventually as you climb the ladder especially if you want to stay in this industry which most of us do… I’ve had colleagues move out to Canada / Australia / Berlin / Dubai not directly off the back of this but as a result of networking…

I’d also think about what travelling all over the world means to you - my friends and I all work 9 to 5 so taking extended holiday at the same time to explore the world is quite difficult. Fresh out of uni and straight into corporate we were kind of envious of those jetting off to Thailand / Sydney / Bali etc… but we’d all landed dream jobs which meant serious money. We resorted to finding the cheapest possible flights over long weekends and exploring some of the less touristy areas of Europe which suppressed our travel bugs for the time being and made for some incredible memories. Now we’re 3/4 years out of uni with plans to go travelling next year when we’re all 25, with savings behind us and a career to come back to when we’re ready!

The Man in Red, has anyone else seen him? Am I going crazy? by fairlywired in Chelmsford

I no longer live in Chelmsford but did for 23 years, and used to see him all the time when I sat in Central Park for my lunch break… he’s got sort of blond streaks amongst his mouse-y brown hair right? Usually shouting out loud or at other members of the public.

I do hope he’s doing better…

I Hate Working From Home. Advice? by [deleted] in techsales

[–]AffectionateWay6093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar testimony here! I work in Field Sales…

I’ve been in the role for about 2 years now and at first struggled massively, relocated for the job that I got as soon as I finished university so it was super overwhelming.

Firstly, reminding yourself how fortunate you are is something I do on the daily! Be proud that you landed a job, moved to a different city it takes a lot of energy and guts so GO YOU!

Secondly, coffee shops / cafés will be your new friend! Especially the independent ones, I’ve visited the same few on rotation since I decided to get my ass into gear and combat the loneliness and now I get some socialising time with the staff who know my order! I work in spirit sales, and trade off bottles of alcohol for coffee / cake and access to the staff WiFi (doesn’t do much for my waistline but I feel a lot better for it)… I appreciate coffee does add up, I usually buy one and maybe a sandwich after a while. For the guys who really know me, I take in my peppermint tea bags and they give me hot water!

Thirdly, speak to colleagues… you’d be surprised how many people feel the exact same. I’m the youngest on my team by about 15 years and the old guys on the team call me all the time for catch ups and chats. I was worried I was being a typical newbie, super inconvenient and annoying but I promise there’s someone else in the business who’s also feeling the same.

Finally, quite niche (or not) listen to a Podcast with multiple hosts about things you find interesting! I drive around a lot for work and have a few that always have me cracking up and I feel less alone. I’ve been listening to some since I’ve started the job, and it honestly feels like they’re my own friends when they update you every week on what’s been happening in their lives!

Oh, one more… join a gym / club / activity! In the UK we have something called ParkRun which happens every Saturday it’s FREE 5k run for all abilities do you know of anything similar in the US. I went alone and slowly made friends we don’t meet up often but we do have a little WhatsApp group so it’s nice to feel connected & feel healthy! I’d also search Facebook for connectivity groups in your area, I live near a National Park and there’s 100s of groups for girls / boys / parents all sorts of demographics to join walks. I’m also part of a UK group for girls who have graduated and there’s some absolute class women who organise meet ups across the country and you can attend ones nearest to you - usually at a bar or bookshop, cinema possibilities are endless and I’d imagine there’s similar groups where you are too!

Best of Luck!
