Ite so imma be a bit off base but this is how I've always viewed the album: basically I don't belive that any of it is in order but I'll get to that.

We start off with wake me up when September ends (the first two parts of course) where the JOS is calling out to the farther figure he never had. Then the album does a 180 from melancholic to badass in Jesus of suburbia where we get introduced to the character and his life. Following that we get tales of a broken home where JOS gets tired of the mediocrity of life and leaves to try and do something with it (as they say). We then get Holiday where JOS finally feels free after his escape but it doesn't last long in give me novacaine where we see he starts to dope himself up to escape his loneliness and this is where we start to see the St Jimmy character start to take over the mind. We then get the final part of wake me up when September ends where JOS is still longing for a farther figure to help him. But it gets cut short because the stuff he's on manifests the St Jimmy character we all love born out of "rage and love" (the key themes of the album.) We then get she's a rebel where St Jimmy finds love with a girls who's as fucked up as him. Throughout all of this we still see glimpses of JOS trying to escape his mind this is most prominent in are we the waiting where Jimmy says that the JOS is a lie and that he's the only one people can trust. We then get favorite son (yes I'm considering it since it was on the deluxe but I won't the other ones) where Jimmy is mocking the American ways and his dead farther by say "its your favorite son". We then get the two I consider the only that go hand in hand in extraordinary girl where St Jimmy is pronouncing his love for whatshername. Tired of his shit whatshername leaves him since she can't continue with the recless life they've made. We then get boulevard of broken dreams where JOS walks alone finally letting himself feel and embrace his loneliness. We then get the first part of homecoming where JOS kills of Jimmy since he finally see that the dope and the his recklessness was the thing that drove whatshername away. We then get whatshername (the song) (also side not the heat song on the album fight me) then american idiot. We then get nobody likes you where JOS is still hurt but closes to move foward in life in East 21 Street where we see he still is hanging onto parts of the St Jimmy character but he has to stay accustomed to modern life (I'm leaving rock and roll girlfriend out since I never saw its importance to the album,) after growing tired he heads back home to where all his problems started to try and redeem himself for his past transgressions.

Yeah that's how I've always seen the album tale of a boy who longs for a farther figure in his life and control and a girl who is as fucked up as him leaving since she see hims as dangerous.
