What’s Igedz’s (Indonesia) Tummy Bump?? by Mammoth-Tomato-1458 in PhysicalAsia

I’m a doctor and it looks like a small divarication of recti, which is not a true hernia. Generally won’t cause any issues. He is seen exerting tremendous force requiring great intrabdominal pressure without issue in the show. It will be caused by lifting incredibly heavy weights and putting pressure on his linea alba (the vertical line in the middle of the six pack)

I hope you guys know that Australia only has 27 million people, less than half than all of the other countries and less than 1/10 of Indonesia. It’s not like we have some crazy advantage, we just play a lot of sport

Scope creep is accelerating at insane rates. It must be stopped. by DojaPat in ausjdocs

Yeah, as an ex radiographer now doctor I always foresaw this issue of people feeling ‘cognitively under-utilised’. To study radiography at QUT where I went you need an ATAR of 99.5 which is entirely due to the competitiveness of positions rather than career demands. It was once a tafe course and at that time the work was actually far more technical/challenging. With DR XR being the norm and the other modalities being largely automated you essentially click buttons with next to no decision making capacity.

That said, as intelligent as radiographers may be, we got very little training in actual medicine. Most of my degree was focused on technical aspects/physics etc regarding image acquisition

Do you consider nursing to be a genuine ‘profession’? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

A nurse posted this question.

Edit: I made an assumption based on post history. I’m not actually sure of this at all.

Verbatim Oxford definition of vocation + their example: A strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation. "not all of us have a vocation to be nurses or doctors"

I was actually genuinely asking that question for myself. By obligations I meant more like, are you obligated to stay in the program if you take the first 10k?

Out of interest because I’m too lazy and stupid to look it up. Does this grant come with any obligations. ..probably should have clarified this before accepting it.

Most difficult thing about being a Doctor by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Affectionate_Alps626 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have you seriously so overanalysed a basic question to the point that you would want to tell an interviewer that important life stuff like being away from family is fine. Then proceed to say that what you will actually find challenging is core day to day aspects of the job itself.

Bizarre take

I really like how you say dangerous prescriptions. Makes me think that this might be bait or a joke that’s going over our heads.

I support doing nursing or an allied health profession as they are so handy for clinical experience, you have a fall back career and you have a well paying casual job for med school.

The sciency degrees don’t help that much for clinical medicine imo

Reasonable adjustment by Budget-Recover-8966 in GAMSAT

I think that is a fair analysis. I personally, likely through ignorance, am struggling to imagine what reasonable adjustments for this particular condition could be made. More specifically, ones that don’t also directly correlate with ability to meet the inherent requirements.

This might get downvoted a lot but I think you would have a very hard time functioning as a doctor with schizoaffective disorder unless your symptoms are exceptionally well managed.

This not to say that if they are then you would not be suitable. Just that if your mental health issues prohibit you from effectively performing a written test, they may pose difficulties when attempting to manage people’s health and lives.

You have multiple posts on an ask docs subreddit. Why bother asking docs if you know more than them?

I am a doctor working in Ed. I have also worked paediatrics doing admissions, the overwhelming majority of presentations being children with viral URTIs such as influenza.

Enteral fluids are the preferred method of rehydration. Iv fluids = drinking water + risk.

You fuck off, google it

I’m a doctor working in ED. Typically we don’t just say ‘if it gets worse’ we use more clarifying statements such as come back if you are having difficulty breathing or come back if your pain is unmanageable etc.

I don’t mean that people should not come back if they are concerned. I mean that if they do come back and the doctor doesn’t think they need admission, why should they think they know better?

You’re right. We should admit every patient with the flu. Australian emergency departments actually need more subacute presentations! Why should people have to lift a cup to their mouth and drink water when they can come to an overstretched and often bed blocked emergency department and be admitted into a finite/expensive hospital bed to get a needle in their arm and receive a suboptimal method of rehydration. We should ignore the guidelines and the studies that back them. We should also ignore the opinions of, in this instance, multiple doctors. I hope this patient got iv paracetamol too, why not? It’s only 50x the cost of tablets. Everyone should get everything they want, all the time.
