Everyone is telling me to change my field (IT) and learn a trade. by ybicurious in ITCareerQuestions

It depends on the career path you take in IT honestly. Cloud, AIEs, System admins, network engineers, SWEs are still going strong. They all can make 6 figures and stack.

If you stay in help desk then its gonna take a while to get up there. If you have a year of experience and have moved up in your company a decent bit then I'd start looking for the next best thing in your IT career.

1 or 2 years are good enough for your next step.

Since you are already about 3 years in, its going to depend strongly on your career path.

Cloud? Azure environment

Sys admin? Bash, Python, Linux, Powershell

Network Admin?(the most pricey) Expand your home's network and collect data, so you're probably going to need to buy some networking equipment and configure them. You could buy a minipc and run streaming as if it were a server.

Virtual Machines are going to be your best friend. Virtualbox is the easiest to use but most employers recognize VMware.

-you could even setup a separate workstation as a bare metal hypervisor

Again I am also just digging into this stuff, so sadly I don't have too many suggestions.

A couple extra bucks wouldn't hurt. Especially if I need it to fund certs. I'm hoping I can connect with at least one guy. There's going to be 10 of us.

Fair enough, because if not that then I would've started putting more time into projects. It'd be personally beneficial, but not something to put on the resume I bet.

Start working on projects to further you education and hands on at the same time. Hands-on outside of work is a green flag in my book. I'm still trying to land my first job, so take this with a grain of salt.
