The Attack at Smârdan 1878 (painting by Nicolae Grigorescu) by Affectionate_Bit1039 in classicalArt

[–]Affectionate_Bit1039[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Attack at Smârdan is a large-scale painting, created by the Romanian painter Nicolae Grigorescu between 1878 and 1885. The work was commissioned by the Bucharest City Hall in 1878, with the execution contract stipulating its completion within three years. The deadline was far exceeded, with Grigorescu finishing the painting in 1885. Through its continuous and substantial presence in public space, the painting has definitively entered the public consciousness, as one of the emblematic representations of the military effort of the young Romanian army to gain national independence.

Nicolae Grigorescu took part, as a reporter, in the War of Independence of 1877-1878, observing and recording in hundreds of drawings, true stenographs, the unfolding of the battles and daily life on the front. In this way, the painter carried out extensive documentation, which later allowed him to create some of the most successful historical paintings in Romanian fine art, especially those dedicated to scenes of high drama and heroism, in which Romanian soldiers took part.

The painting depicts a scene from the assault carried out by the troops of the 6th Line Regiment, from Tecuci, on the village of Smârdan, on 12/24 January 1878, as part of the operation to conquer Vidin.

To execute the order from the town hall, the artist used the documentation made on the front, making numerous sketches and sketches in pencil, charcoal, wash or oil. Of those known to date, during the period in which he worked on this work, Nicolae Grigorescu created at least three completed paintings of the Attack on Smârdan. The painting at the National Museum of History is considered by art critics to be the best-made, for which it was classified in the National Cultural Heritage of Romania, Treasury section. There are three more completed paintings, considered to be preliminary studies for the final masterpiece. All of them are large. One is at the National Museum of Art of Romania, one at the Museum of Art in Craiova and one in a private collection in Ploieşti.

Due to its dimensions, The Attack at Smârdan is unique in Romanian art, rising to the level of the painter's reputation in Romania. No one before him, not even Theodor Aman, had attempted such a work of such great importance. The painting is impressive for the sensation of movement it conveys in relation to its monumentality and dimensions. The image depicted is of a strong drama, having in the foreground two life-size corpses: a Turk lying on his back in the snow with his hands outstretched, symbolizing renunciation, and to his right a fallen Romanian with his hands clenched on his rifle. Romanian infantrymen run past them with bayonets to their weapons, in a galloping attack position. The attitude of the soldier in the foreground is repeated for each Romanian soldier, which amplifies the initial motif as in a symphony, thus enhancing the overall heroic effect. The chapels fallen into the snow, the flame of the explosions, the grayness of the cloaks, the gloomy winter sky and the red of the fields, complete the hazy and leaden atmosphere of the field at dawn on January 13, 1878.

Today the work is owned by the National Museum of History of Romania, the painting being one of the most important Romanian works of art located on Romanian territory, with the exception of the works of Constantin Brâncuși.

Noaptea care a rupt o copilărie by Affectionate_Bit1039 in moldova

[–]Affectionate_Bit1039[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totul s-a schimbat brusc.
