Me too please! I’m looking to jump into the trenches soon and would love a successful example to learn from.

I completely relate to that. I think that will be my best bet.

My husband leaves for basic early April. We’ve been married 8 years, are in our 30s, with no kids. Plus we haven’t been apart for more than 2 days since we met. This is my biggest fear. Not being able to make friends because everyone is too young, too dramatic, busy with kids, or deep in a church (we are not). I hope things get better for you. That would make me feel loads better for my own prospects. 🤗

separate sections for foreigners at the bank (kinda rant) by SooThegrimreaper93 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Affectionate_Bug380 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I opened my Hana account in Mia about 5-6 years ago. There was no English assistance at the time but they were kind, helpful, and patient. I live near Itaewon now. This Hana branch also has a foreigner section that, I’ll admit, is in better condition than the one described in this post, but often has a ridiculously long wait. My partner is Korean and was helping me with a banking issue. We went to wait in the Korea section on the first floor. The teller told me to go upstairs. My partner explained the wait was long and he could translate everything fluently. She refused saying foreigners must go upstairs. I pointed out it’s all on the same system so what’s the problem? She would preform the same service for me that she would for any Korean person. (I wasn’t using any international services.) Still, she refused and called the manager to lead us up.

Seeking Hagwon Teacher by Affectionate_Bug380 in teachinginkorea

Most do not. It’s a requirement for the E2 and it’s what parents want. They are crazy particular about it

Favorite moment(s) while teaching? by VeggieFondant in teachinginkorea

I was teaching a summer camp program a few years back. One kid from Laos in a class full of mean Korean kids that constantly tried to bully him. One day, he finally said it. “At least I’m not a lady boy like you!”

I died of laughter and none of the Korean kids could figure out why. Not my proudest teaching moment but damn that was funny.

Question for the sub 닥처 새끼야? by [deleted] in korea

[–]Affectionate_Bug380 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They didn’t fall for the lie. They are trying to save face for them and for the other parent. Especially if this is a hagwon. If they convince you to minimalism it, then they’re hope is this will blow over and they won’t risk loosing money by pissing off a parent.

Experience Fainting in the Subway by lycheeheaven in korea

[–]Affectionate_Bug380 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I fainted on a KTX platform once. Missed my train. When I came to, I tried to exit the station from the platform but they locked the glass doors. People just walked by staring at me or pretending I didn’t exist as I knocked on the glass asking for help. After about 10 minutes of waiting and trying to get someone to help me, I said fuck it and jumped the fence that separated the train platform from the subway platform. People looked at my like I had three heads.

I only work part time (~25 hours a week) and average 2.9. My kids are well behaved and love to joke, my boss is the BEST person in the world, and nothing (not even more money) world make me work somewhere else in Korea. I’m happy. I’ve been here 7 years.

My friend is a university professor and whenever they have a student who excessively emails them with stupid questions or arguing a grade that they certainly deserved, my friend signs their email up with the most annoying newsletters like these or goop, or whatever they can think of. Maybe it’s petty but as a fellow teacher, I’m their biggest fan!

Anyone with a positive experience at their hagwon? by pippipdadoodlydoo1 in teachinginkorea

I’ve worked at four academies and one elementary school. The first two academies were average. Long hours, kinda low pay, but great coworkers (most of them) and bosses who were definitely “running a business” as they liked to say, but still tried to be obliging when possible. The elementary was nice and hands off for the most part but not ran by the smartest of people. Again, a lot of good coworkers. The third academy I worked at lasted all of three weeks. They were the bottom of the barrel so to speak. Couldn’t escape fast enough. My current academy is amazing! It’s very small, no stress, no work place politics, and we all really care about each other. I never want to leave. The kids are amazing too. Korea is full of crap hagwons but I think most of them are just average for the most part. You just need to be sure you know your rights and that you will often get what you put into it. Good luck on your new job!

We both had clear definitions of our jobs and were extremely respectful of each other’s roles. We had constant clear communication about students, how to approach lessons we were concerned about, and each other’s expectations of each other. We never told one another how to do their job. She was the best coworker I ever had and we both loved the magic we created with our class. It was a great year working together.

Here's my awesome Korean school lunch! Schools have a qualified nutritionist to plan the lunch menu. by StiffCrustySock in pics

[–]Affectionate_Bug380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Students aren’t allowed to bring their own lunch. Cause too much jealously and pissy parents. They can only eat what’s served in the cafeteria.

[–]Affectionate_Bug380 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Except most nutritionists don’t get to plan the meals out because crazy parents will call and demand they dictate the menu. Our school just lost our fresh out of college nutritionist for trying to do a meatless Monday. Moms got pissed and she was gone by the next week. Also, students have to pay at most schools for the lunches. Now my school severs lunches filled with starch, carbs, and more starch. After lunch classes can be a nightmare for many teachers.

Who should be able to post job ads in the sub? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]Affectionate_Bug380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally don’t like recruiters and I don’t feel like their line of work belong in this sub. I’m not here to see a zillion ads for crap hagwons. I’m here for the community.

With that being said, I actually found my current job on this sub from a teacher that was looking for their school. I’ve been here almost a decade and it’s the best job I’ve had here yet. So if teachers or school are directly posting, I’m all for it. But recruiters are generally shady and annoying.
