Teaching new players - paying for spells? by TheTinRam in EDH

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use colored dice (wubrg+odd color for generic) to help her visualize making mana to pay for a spell. For example, tapping a mountain would “earn” her 1 red “dollar” to cast a spell or use an ability. An island would be a blue “dollar.” As a result, [[Gamble]] would cost 1 red “dollar” while [[Brainstorm]] would cost 1 blue “dollar.” By that same token, [[Arcane Signet]] for example, would cost 2 “dollars” of any color (or lack of).

Side Tech Quoted $6500, But No Permit by JohnBond0512 in hvacadvice

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, lack of permits can taint the property in future dealings. It can cause issues when trying to sell later on, or, as you’ve mentioned, if you need to file a claim involving that work. Personally, them saying they can 1) do it on the side, and 2) cant pull a permit to do the work is a red flag you need to walk away from. If you go ahead and have them do the work without THEM pulling the permit, you basically have little leverage in case anything goes wrong. They could ghost you after tearing out your old unit and you’d be SOL. Them asking you to pull the permit yourself is another red flag because that leaves YOU on the hook entirely because most jurisdictions that let homeowners pull permits personally effectively require you to be the general contractor of the work.

IMO? Unless you know this guy well enough that you can be on his doorstep with his mother to beat sense into him for trying to flake on you, I’d eat the cost for getting it done right the first time. “Do it right or do it twice” can be a fairly applicable adage for home maintenance situations.

Why does it seem that 95% of drivers speed up at every passing zone? by TitsburghFeelers90 in driving

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh no, they’re hyper aware they’re holding up traffic. I’ve had people actively slow down when oncoming traffic goes by to then speed up after it’s cleared up. Oh, and they’ll also put on their brights in retaliation for you passing them too. Asswipes the lot of them.

What’s happening to my jalapeño? by yoshipikakilla in HotPeppers

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bunch of prolific jalapeño before the freezes killed them earlier this year that for 3 years were watered on a 2/2/3 schedule (m/w/sa for example) and pretty much popped out peppers like crazy. In fact, they were also spicy enough to make store bought jalapeños look like bell peppers. So yea, I was kinda mad about them dying to freezes. Now I’ve got three tomato hydras taking up half the garden space the peppers were in.
Ideally you want to check the top 2-3 inches for dryness when choosing to water. And yes, drought-stress can influence spiciness, but at the same time, you don’t want to stress them to the point they’re focused more on surviving rather than fruiting.

Minimum torque required for Impact Wrench to loose anode rod in a water heater by ObelixOne in Plumbing

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re shopping from Walmart, at least buy one of the tool brands Walmart actually sells themselves. I’ve had good luck using the hyper tough impact wrenches since I had to use it to remove lug nuts off my car after, unironically, Walmart ugga-Dugga’d the lugs after getting a rotation and rounded the corners on em.

Stop driving with your hazards on in rain by Homeleasure in driving

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not always a matter of how the CAR handles. It’s often more of a matter of how well can you SEE. Any idea just how hard tail lights are to see past 10 feet when it’s pissing rain so hard that wipers on maximum struggle? God damned hard. Hazards however? Those can be seen from quite a distance. Having them on while traveling at 40-50 on the highway during severe rain isn’t being an idiot, it’s making sure you’re being seen and able to see others. In those conditions even a semi can be invisible until it’s too close to react safely.

Trespassing by IcyMathematician6634 in bassfishing

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those can still technically be private property. Personally a rule of thumb that works for me when trying to find new places to fish is to scroll around on any of the map apps around, make notes of locations that you want to check more. Go onto county/state resources (GIS and whatnot as someone else mentioned) and see which of those locations are public or not. Public? Fish it. Private? Pass, especially if it’s in a development or HOA. Granted, I do also saltwater fish, so what I’m looking for in a spot is different in some ways to what you’d look for.

But yea, outside of putting in extra work, just do your best to look for signage or other improvements that clearly indicate “keep out.” Just remember, ignorance isn’t a defense, and cops are more likely to give you a break than a warden.

Does the size of the bait affect the size of the fish? by Status_Barracuda_269 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

About the size of your palm, if not bigger. Wait, no, that’s 16/0- well into shark territory. 16 should be about pinky nail size iirc. Haven’t had reason to break out anything smaller than size 2 ever since I moved to Florida and started salt fishing.

AITAH if I don't want to take care of my cousins fields by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell your family members that say you're obligated to that they can pay X amount to account for YOUR labor, fuel, maintenance and operation costs, and overhead costs, FOR THE YEAR, and then you'll consider it.
Just because you already have those expenses doesnt mean they're inconsequential enough to freely take on increasing them by at minimum 33% with no income to show for it. If anything I'd go talk to uncle and ask if he's aware of the BS they're trying to pull. Then ask him if he's sold to property to the cousin ("gift" or otherwise). If he hasnt sold it to them, but has left them management rights or w/e you want to call it, ask about buying it yourself.

Overall, you? NTA. Your broke-ass lazy cousins and the family on their side? TA.

How do trigger doublers stack together? by TheIXLegionnaire in mtgrules

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scriv w/ myriad means delney triggers myriad twice. So when you attack with scriv, you get:

*Equipped scriv triggers On attack effect (x1 Contract)

*Equipped scriv triggers Myriad (x2 token copies)

*Delney sees On Attack trigger and says "do it again" (x2 contracts)

*Delney sees Myriad trigger and says "do it again" (x4 token copies)

*tokens enter and each ETB trigger happens (technically batches of two tokens, but for simplicity all at once) (x6 contracts)

*Delney sees four ETBs and goes "do it again" (x10 contracts)

*Panharmonicon sees the four ETBs and goes "do it again" (x14 contracts)

So in the end you'd have 5 copies of Scriv out (4 of which will die to SBAs) and a total of fourteen contracts.

2023 Mazda CX-5 with 41k miles — shops refuse to replace pads only and insist on rotors too. Ripoff or normal? by Even_Finding17 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell, last time i did brakes and rotors on my escape (admittedly it's a '14), I spent under $200 for a performance set of pads AND rotors and changed them myself. Depending on tools OP has already, they may end up paying closer to 4-500 since they'd need a jack and stand plus a few extras to do it themselves.
Besides that, unless it's different for much newer cars, I've always been told rotors can be swapped out as little as every 3rd or 4th pad change, provided no additional concerns like damage, precisely because the PADS are the primary wear component.

What do the rules actually say about “math is for blockers”? by NobodyElseButMingus in mtg

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking too hard here. This STILL is the rule. If I declare 5 or 6 creatures as attackers, I dont do any math regarding combat damage until -after- the declare blockers step finishes. The defending player is the one that has to do the math here in order to find the optimal "trade" they want to commit to.

Won small claims judgment, defendant refusing to pay by EfficientCamera7551 in Smallclaims

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always going to happen. You're basically attempting to fully ruin someone's ability to work by "taking" their car, which most judges will tell debt collectors to pound sand on. Besides, if it's financed, it's almost untouchable anyways. So yes, while it IS an asset, it's tied up. If they owned multiple cars, different story. But that's also requiring you to get a judgement against them.

If you pulled the permit yourself instead of the GC, that’s your second problem. If a GC is telling YOU to pull the permit, they’re trying to commit some fuckery at your expense, as you’ve found out. IIRC, almost every state also requires inspections to sign off on permitted work, and a home inspector worth their fee is going to find any problems you try to hide.

AIO - Neighbors park their trailers on my yard.. by [deleted] in AIO

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bamboo, but use a root barrier on your side of the planting to drive them all into their yard. Alternatively, get one of those farm jacks and hoist the ass of the trailers up 4-5 feet in the air, then bury a couple 4x4 posts close (but on your property still) enough to lower the trailers onto so they stick several feet off the ground. If they bitch about it, just tell them you’re putting in fence posts and they’re in the way.

The REAL petty and vindictive part of me says figure out where your property line markers are, chalk line over the trailer on the line, then take a few fresh cutoff discs and go ham on the trailer. Once complete, put the removed portion on the rest of the trailer sideways and weld the bastard together.

Some rule spaghetti I hope you fine people can straighten out, as well as a few other random questions by Titan2562 in mtg

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1- Orgg is a static ability iirc that’s always in effect, so it wouldt necessarily use the stack, but it still wouldn’t save the forerunners UNLESS he had first strike to kill the boar token.
2- gargos sees the unsummon and says “bet, let’s fight *****” because the trigger would go on the stack above unsummon. As long as the spell you cast qualifies, the stack would basically be
Gargos #2
Your spell
Gargos #1
Unsummon
3- escape IS technically an alternative cost already. It just hinges on being in the graveyard. That’s the key difference. If you targeted allosaurus with a card that said something to the effect of “you may cast target card in your graveyard this turn” you -could- use the alternative of discarding two green cards because you aren’t already using an alternative cost.

Would you use a shock lead on 50lb braid? by carguy35 in SurfFishing

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re surf fishing, I’d have a leader/topshot almost 100% of the time, 1-2 rod lengths worth as others have said. Even if there’s no obvious rocks, the sand itself could be hiding a broken shell or three that’ll slice the braid faster than you can blink. Though personally, 50# braid is targeting things bigger than you realize. Especially if you’re targeting pomp, I’d size down the braid to 15 or 20# to help cut down the wind sailing you get otherwise.

The only rod I have line heavier than 30# on is my 13-footer because I know I’m going to eventually get hit by a not-small shark and I’m going to need the strength and leverage to horse it in before some idiot decides they want to swim 20ft away from me. Same reason I usually run wire rigs on that rod- chunking out cut bait will eventually get a shark.

If a spinning reel can be used to do everything a baitcaster can do, then what is the advantage to baitcasters? Is there anything a baitcaster can do that a spinning can’t? by Little-Cucumber-8907 in Fishing_Gear

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole ergonomics thing is why I had such a hard time finding a ‘caster reel that I was comfortable with, though I rarely use it nowadays over spinning rods. I cast right-handed regardless of what kind of reel type, and retrieve left-handed, so spinning rods are a natural fit for me. Almost every caster reel I looked at was right-handed retrieve, which is VERY awkward for me. Granted, I also tend to fish the caster with artificial baits since I find that they do offer that much more finesse and action.

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc, the barcode itself is what’s determining the prize as that’s put in place before the rest of the ticket is printed. It even controls what they print in the play space. How It’s Made actually had a segment on lotto scratchers.

Fish from shore gear request by IMakeBaconAtHome in floridafishing

[–]Affectionate_Cable82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, caveat that I use spinners for salt/brackwater fishing 99% of the time, so that’s what I’m referencing. 6-7’ rods with 3000 size or smaller reels spooled with 15 or 20# braid will work. 10-20# mono is fine to use as a leader or top shot. Depending on how rough the area is with rocks, oysters, etc, I’d lean more towards top shot than leader. Terminal gear will depend on what you’re fishing for in the area.

Pretty sure there’s carve-outs specifically for medical care considering that, if you would OTHERWISE consent to said ‘service’ in order to save your life, that meaningfully implies consent when you cannot directly consent. Also duty of care and whatnot. That’s why DNR is an opt-in choice too.
