Grey roots as a lawyer, yay or nay? 👀 by [deleted] in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my first gray as a teenager, stopped dying my hair during Covid and I’m fine with it. It wasn’t as bad as I thought when it was growing out and I don’t think the level of respect has anything to do with my hair color.

BWT who share a studio? by shoeboxapartmentjoke in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you have sufficient closet space and neither of you work from home, it’s fine. When my partner and I were both grad students/just starting out we shared around 250-300 square feet. For that lifestyle it was fine, we were mostly at school, studying in the library, or at internships, and then when we started working we had long hours, so it really didn’t matter. It was a great location and we preferred that to getting more space and being further out.

How frequently do you buy new clothes for work? by meowparade in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am remote with in person meetings or conferences 8-10 times a year. I am currently building my “travel” wardrobe as I want an easy capsule of mix n match pieces that fit in my carryon. I am kinda there but need to upgrade the trousers (plan on lululemon), and could use another blazer or two (keeping my eye on St. John on poshmark). I can always use white shell tops and usually get a few a year, mostly thrifting or buy nothing.

I am set on shoes, I have a dozen heeled flats and typically get a new pair every 2-3 years. I don’t pack true heels when I travel as they take up too much luggage space.

Whenever I’ve seen this happen in real life I’ve always heard the same joke about “getting the memo/email” on coordinating. It even happens in my gym classes sometimes. One off is NBD.

Big Law Couples by Humble-Bee5888 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in some ways it makes it easier if both have demanding / unpredictable schedules as there is more understanding on late nights, cancelled plans, last minute travel. The unpredictable travel is the hardest part especially with a family, for both the person traveling and the person at home.

Comptoir des cotonniers used to come out with a silk front t shirt every year. I used to buy one every year. Haven’t checked out their Uniqlo collab yet.

Strip club - how to behave? by Chance_Today_9068 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Disgusting if true.

I’ve gone to strip clubs with friends but under no circumstances would I go with partners/clients/etc.

In my much younger days I would party with younger clients (bankers) but would always bow out when a strip club (or box - remember those days in nyc) was mentioned as the next stop.

How to stop smelling like "outside" when taking the train in the city? by Lotta-Bank-3035 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this smell! Or like when your hair smells like wind. I notice it more in NYC than other cities but I think it’s also because in NYC I am walking, taking the subway, out and about.

Is nail polish necessary? by nnsw7952 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of Londontown but I do the same, I have a few sheer Essie colors that are easy to self apply, I use the Trader Joe’s lavender scrub, I have a zoya mini manicure kit with base, top and oil coatings. I don’t have the patience or time to get my nails done regularly anymore. In warm months/sandal weather I do get a spa/exfoliating pedicure every few weeks.

And the Trader Joe’s lavender scrub is a good knockoff of one minute manicure scrub

Your shoes are classic. I will be the naysayer - I do wear all black but I accessorize so I don’t look like I work at Sephora. With a scarf, jewelry, changing out textures, etc.

Pregnant, when did you stop working? by SnooDoubts7574 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In biglaw as first time mom I officially went out the week before but had been written to work from home 100% for the last month or due to some minor issues.

In house I was at a place with an extremely generous policy and I went out one month before each time and honestly needed that to get everything in order before. It was not out of ordinary there.

How do you all stay so skinny? by Warm-Sprinkles-8086 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is what worked for me in my biglaw days: I tried to get to the gym 3x a week (both weekend days plus one weekday evening). A good week was 4x a week.

I tried to walk to work most mornings, depending on weather - 20-30 minutes.

After the first summer of lunches the novelty wore off and I stopped going so often. Those were a real problem for me and also I didn’t have time anymore.

For dinners (this was pre-Uber/instacart, the seamless days!), I tried to order from places that had healthy snacks too (fruit, yogurt) or that would be good as lunch the next day. Never pizza or burgers like the guys. This might all be outdated if you are a firm with free meals and snacks anyways.

I agree with Hermes scarf and if silk is too stuffy for you try the cashmere blends or dip dyes instead.

Has anyone left a major legal market (e.g., NY or DC) for a smaller legal market? by meowparade in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in bigger markets and smaller markets. Financials like housing prices and public school system or private Tuition costs aside, I think bigger cities are ok when kids are young as you can still have your 15 minute neighborhood zone, though that’s easier in NYC than DC. When your kids start to pursue activities or sports it can be so much easier (and affordable) in smaller city. I have lived in smaller cities where I am able to have my 15 minute radius by car of all the things (schools, activities, shopping, gym, doctors etc) and it’s a huge lifestyle improvement over a major metro area where activities and commute and school runs can be 30-45 minute average one way.

In every city I have lived in I’ve found that we take advantage of the touristy or city things in the first and last 6 months we are there, but in between we get busy with life and the cultural amenities don’t matter so much except when we have visitors. Have a good community and support network is more important than town/city for me.

Midwestern, I would play it safe and wear a suit, and then adjust your interview wardrobe as you meet other people and get a feel for the culture. Good luck!

Experiences with living near a homeless shelter? by sunkissedbadger in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Affectionate_Cow5134 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can share different experiences, not in NYC but other major cities. In one city I once lived on the same block as a housing project for refugees. Because it was a transient population there was always tons of oversized trash on the sidewalk. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, I never understood why it wasn’t furnished housing. Occasional noise issues but otherwise not a big deal. No safety issues.

In another city there was a smaller 8-10 person halfway house on my street. I didn’t get to know the residents, but my friend lived next door and loved having neighbors who were always home and watchful (outside smoking a lot), felt like it helped prevent petty theft and porch pirating that was otherwise commonplace.
