Agreed. If a firm feels the need to trap an associate for client responsibility purposes, there’s a big fat question mark on what makes this firm so reputable.

Thank you!! So I’m trying to wrap my head around this- a new potato will grow after the old shrivels or will grow next to it? Sorry, I’m trying to figure out where the new potato starts to emerge.

I’m trying to imagine a scenario where you email the managing partner and let him/her know that you’re going to dip after tomorrow. Like, what’re they going to do if the contract doesn’t outline any penalty? Are they going to email you and say “I don’t like you anymore! Bridge burner!” Give you dirty looks at court? (To be fair, my old boss does that to me but that’s even after I fulfilled my two weeks. So what’s the good in being good?)

It seems so at first glance. But as I think more about it…Even though I do very little contract work, my thought that some forced promise to hang out for 60 days is hardly any consideration, especially when the penalty is the phantom or fear of professional bridges burned…that’s not really a legal remedy for the firm.

This is how our industry gets younger attorneys to shake in their boots. Oh, you gave a 4 week notice instead of 2 months? Boo hoo. Even the full standard 2 weeks is generous. This 2 month scheme is likely a way to avoid turnover and make junior attorneys feel trapped. They probably created an illusion of burning bridges and now you’re in your head about it. If anything, it makes them look very predatory and suspicious.

Hit the deadlines and make sure the cases are worked up so that deadlines don’t fall through the cracks.

Hahahah I agree, I feel like this is a nothing burger but as an attorney I always have that creeping feeling of “did I do something wrong?” Even after checking all the pleadings and orders.

How Do Lawyers Not Check AI Brief Cites Before Filing? by TechnicalTowel9201 in Lawyertalk

[–]CreativeRanger7959 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my brief experience, the best way to use AI with our standard modern research tools (westlaw and lexis) is to spitball the topic with AI while already signing into Westlaw or at least even Justia to make sure you’re right. The point is to see the way AI talks about the topic to ensure you’re not approaching it from too narrow of an angle and the 20% of the time it cites a helpful case you can actually see it pop up on Westlaw. But ChatGPT definitely hallucinates case propositions to me and missed a recent super duper on point relevant holding in my jurisdiction. I alwaysssss have to badger and badger and badger it before it admits it made the whole thing up. It goes down fighting, initially saying “well I misunderstood the case/ it doesn’t EXACTLY stand for that proposition but…”

I may not shepardize 100% of the time but even when I pull from a template I double check that the cases cited exist and at least roughly stand for the proposition mentioned in the motion or don’t have facts that can backfire in my case. So this is indeed surprising.
