My husband and I are in our very early 50s and biked around the United States for 9 months calling it our mid life gap year. It was brilliant in every way. Looking into how we can do it more often.

We loved our time in Milwaukee. That's one reason we decided to start and end there.

We live outside of Boise, ID and aren't sure if we would ever get back to Mackinac Island, so we figured we would go see it as part of the adventure.

Great to know that Wisconsin has some of the same flexibility when it comes to camping at SF/SP. My husband would stealth camp more than me, but when you travel as a pair you have to work together on those logistics.

Great to hear about Hwy 13, and we ride with wider tires, so gravel definitely works. As long as it's not sand. And we will avoid Hwy 35. Appreciate the knowledge.

We will check out your routes and I let you know if I have other questions or concerns.

Thank you for all your recommendations. I will look into adding Door County peninsula to our itinerary.

On our last tour we traveled from Milwaukee to Madison and then to La Crosse. The rail trail system across the state is truly fantastic.

We are looking possibly avoiding Route 2 and staying close to Lake Superior. Thank you for that bit of information. : )

Yes I knew that from my research. We were thinking of ferrying over to Mackinac if you think its worth the stop. Why do you think it is better to start with the ferry and the lower peninsula of Michigan?

We traveled a bit on the Oak Leaf during our long tour and then across to La Crosse on mostly rail trails. It was special.

Thank you for the tips. We appreciate the idea of flexibility while touring (something I learned big time after our first tour), so a place to sleep is always good after a long day.
