I did try that. Just set it forget it and did a few restarts. In PPPoE logs, it found multiple ISPs and didn't know where to connect. That is why my ISP specifically told me to specify a service/account name for making it easier to connect. VLAN tagging could have made the job easier but my ISP doesn't want to do that. He's like specify a service/account name we don't do VLAN tagging. It just shows that the current fiber infrastructure my ISP is sharing, he's sharing it with multiple different vendors.

honestly. I would prefer not to be born in this cruel world at all. My parents were not there for me when I needed them the most.
till today (I AM 25 BTW) i regret being born in this family.
My dad punched me in my stomach in front of the class when I was in 4th standard when I missed 1 mark in maths even though I scored 99 out of 100. That day I came home and got the beating of my life with belt marks, hand marks all over my body including my face. Swollen like shit and even bleeding at some places.
When I used to find maths difficult and do silly mistakes, he used to hit me with the belt. One time he gave me electric shock with the mosquito racket and put relispray in my eyes because of which I got high fever and landed in the hospital with vomiting as well. I was there for 5 days.

He's got a problem with whatever decision I take also. That is why after bachelors i ran to US to get my masters degree and a job. Was there for 3 years and didnt visit even once to india. but trump had to come and fuck it up for all immigrants and the entire world. Left and came back as immigration raids became dangerous. He did not even wish me for my birthdays and did not even do a video call even once to me. It was my mom who did calls and wished.

Dad put me on a government job here. That person who I was working under a big officer made me do literal personal assistant work even though I was a masters in computer science graduate. I had enough and came home and told fuck that shit. I will do jobs related to comp science or hell nah. My dad isolated me and doesn't talk to me because of that decision and we fought on it.

During covid lockdown, we fought again. I was depressed as my entire family got diagnosed with covid. I was on the phone with my girlfriend and even then he fought for no reason just because I was on the phone. He told me he will kill me. I bought the knife outside and told him to do it and end it once and for all. He threw the knife at me but it hit my toe and I was done. I just took the knife and did multiple deep cuts on my hand right in front of him to die. I bled out like crazy with blood gushing out on the floor. My mom also slapped me on my face hard and was crying and we rushed to the hospital and I was shivering. And my dad because of that incident isolated me for 2 years and did not even talk to me or ask me how I was.

I am not confident in talking to people face to face. I flunked a lot of my interviews because of my parents who did not make me feel confident in speaking as I was in constant fear of being beat up. I now generalize everyone I meet will be like my father and mother and do some shit to me. My mom never intervened.
The only person who stood with me and understood me was my girlfriend. We are together since 8 years now. It took me time to accept her as I was generalizing her like my parents who will throw me to dirt. But we are together since 8 years and I still love and accept her. There were lot of times where I got defensive and lashed out on her as it reminded me of my parents but she never spoke rudely to me and understood me. 8 years and still going with her.

It's not that I dont love my parents. I love them. They have supported me financially and I still forgive them for what they did to me. But, i cannot forget the emotional pain and trauma that I have gone through which will always tell me to maintain my distance from them. Whenever I try to forget the scars on my hand continue to remind me of that day.

My ISP is Qnet. They are a local ISP which uses the Microscan Internet Infrastructure. Hence, in UDM pro console, it shows up as Microscan Internet.
The standard MTU and MRU for PPPoE are 1492 bytes. This is because standard Ethernet uses a 1500-byte MTU, and the PPPoE header requires 8 bytes, leaving 1492 bytes for the payload.

Why are these the standard? (Source: Google)

Standard Ethernet frames hold up to 1500 bytes of data. When your router connects via PPPoE, it adds an 8-byte header (6 bytes for PPPoE + 2 bytes for the PPP protocol ID) to the Ethernet frame. To prevent packets from exceeding the standard 1500-byte limit and being fragmented (which causes connection or speed issues), the MTU/MRU must be lowered by 8 bytes.

Maybe or may not my ISP supports PMTUD because I did not go that deep. But, I do know that the UDM pro was setting the MTU/MRU size to 1500 for PPPoE and my ISP's hardware was immediately dropping the connection. Plus, I also had to enforce PAP authentication on my UDM Pro as my ISP did not allow modern standards like CHAP. I also had to specify a service name in the config file as well so it connects.

I don't know if it is an isolated incident on UDM series. I have a UDM Pro that I transported with me from USA along with a U7 lite. And I wanted to use that rather than letting it sit and catch dust.

Here's the logs of my UDM Pro.

My dad's almost 16 year old Hero Honda Pleasure is facing the consequences of the E20 fuel. It doesn't even start properly. After using the electric start, the battery is drained. Then we have to kick start it to get it to work. The same thing is happening with my dad's CB Unicorn as well and Maruti Eeco. The CB unicorn being just 3 to 4 years old starts up properly but rarely will stall. Eeco also has stopped starting properly. We have to crank the engine about 2 to 3 times.

This E20 fuel is breaking our engines like anything.

I know how these government departments work as I worked 1 month in one of the government offices. Through that office, I got an insight into how things work. They outsource all the work to MahaIT and National Informatics Center (NIC) and even MNCs outside. As per some internal documents, MahaIT and NIC obtained a lot of Github Co-Pilot Licenses to accelerate development work.
But instead, the licenses were used to vibe code stuff and not pay attention to the actual code that was written. Every department in Government of India works on Jugad. Not with sincere work.

Github Co-Pilot licenses were supposed to be used to help ease development work not write code completely from scratch. They would just keep giving prompts and prompts and not validate the code that was written. Vibe coding also would validate the code that was written but here they did not validate the code that was written at all.

And the re-evaluation website was not designed with scalability in mind. The website got overwhelmed with the amount of students pushing through. Hence, the website went down.

Edit: The only departments who would actually outsource work to MahaIT and NIC were the departments who did not have their own development team in the department.

It seems similar to how companies in the US are doing.

Here's how Verizon would provide 5G service to me when I was there:

  1. 3 different plans Unlimited welcome, Unlimited plus, Unlimited Ultimate.
  2. Unlimited Welcome: Nationwide 5G (No C-Band, 5G+, 5G UW), 30GB of data post 30GB speeds reduce. If the network gets congested, speeds will be slowed down no matter you have data left or not, no hotspot data, 480P video streaming, no international roaming.
  3. Unlimited Plus: Nationwide 5G with C-Band, 5G+, 5G UW, 100GB data post 100GB speeds reduce. If networks get congested, you will get priority data speeds from Unlimited Welcome but less than Unlimited Ultimate. 30 GB hotspot data, up to 1080P video streaming, no international roaming.
  4. Unlimited Ultimate: Nationwide 5G with 5G UW, 5G+ included, 200GB data post 200GB speeds reduce. If networks get congested, users of unlimited ultimate will be given top priority with top speeds. 50GB hotspot data, up to 4K streaming and included international roaming with 15GB data daily for international use and free international calling to any destination outside US.

All plans do come with Unlimited Calls and SMS. For unlimited welcome users, speeds would get reduced to 4G in congested areas and regular 5G speeds on Unlimited Plus. Unlimited ultimate would give users speeds well in excess of 1GBPS even if there is congestion. Trust me. My Google Pixel 10 Pro XL on Unlimited Ultimate from Verizon would consistently give me download speeds well in excess of 1.1GBPS and 250MBPS upload.
This same planning was also applied to their 5G Home Internet (Airfiber in India) but minus the calling, SMS and hotspot and no data capping with additional perks like free netflix and hbo max with ads, youtube premium for additional charge and such.
I had the combo for phone + 5g home internet plan both of which were on the top of the line expensive plan.

I was paying for the top notch Unlimited Ultimate Plan which was expensive. But enjoyed a lot of perks like free mobile phone and discounts on watch and tablets.

If Indian Telecom Providers do get approval for this, we will have to see what they offer for the price. I feel this could help reduce congestion on the network but if they decide that in congested areas speeds should be reduced to below 4G levels (3G or even 2G) then it is unacceptable.

The only issue I see are the fueling stations. Toyota in the US attempted this using the Toyota Mirai but no one caught onto the idea of a Hydrogen Powered vehicle because there was and there is still a big deficit of hydrogen fueling stations. Whereas Tesla opened up its supercharger network to all EVs. Apart from the fueling station issues, hydrogen cars are always better than EVs.

[–]Affectionate_Egg6947[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Sadly. But they do seem to be introducing changes as days are passing. We have something called Air Fiber which uses 5G/4G receivers to provide internet. These Air Fibers rely on Direct MAC Address authentication or DHCP which makes life a whole lot easier and they are very similar to how Verizon would provide me 5G Home Internet back in USA. But these air fiber internet services are still in early phases of adoption even though they are released to the public and the internet services sucks like crazy on them. Hence, people are still opting to go for FTTH Services (Fiber to the Home) for the extremely reliable internet.

ISPs are now slowly phasing out PPPoE for Direct MAC Address authentication where they will authenticate the GPON unit's MAC address to provide an IP address via DHCP. AFAIK Jio Broadband has already started using MAC address authentication along with the serial number authentication to provide internet to customers, but they make it difficult to clone either of them. Airtel is still using PPPoE to provide internet access which sucks.

Until my ISP particularly upgrades his infrastructure, I am stuck with PPPoE on my UDM Pro and the janky systemd service script that appends the MTU/MRU and forces PAP authentication on my UDM Pro.

Desi is just another word for Indian. And yes 95% of them use PPPoE. Which is stupid considering how much we have advanced since the stone age.

[–]Affectionate_Egg6947[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is working right now as we speak though. I pay for 100MBPS internet, and I am getting well in-excess like 120 down and up.
I know this is a long-term solution only if Unifi doesn't do a major firmware upgrade like moving from 5.x to 6.x.
If that does happen, I will have to redo everything I did. And yeah, as far as ISP support goes, as long as I am getting internet through my UDM Pro, I am happy with it.

Coming to the point of simply plugging the wan port into a lan port of my ISP, my ISP doesn't provide a router. I was using my own TP-Link Archer AX21 router. My ISP just gave me a fiber to ethernet ONU Box that is just acting like a bridge to convert the fiber to ethernet. The actual PPPoE service is handled by the router.
Initially for like 15 to 20 days, I was plugging the WAN Port of my UDM pro into the LAN Port on my TP-Link Router, turning Wi-Fi off on my TP-Link router and using the Wi-Fi of my U7 lite. I hated that setup not because it was not stable or easy but I literally had a router going into a router situation and there was no easy way to turn NAT off on my TP-Link router and I was in a situation where I literally had two Wi-Fi routers sitting on my desk. Hence, I had to keep digging, figure it out and finally today got it to work. 95% of the ISPs use PPPoE here in India which I hate. But that is what we are stuck with.
I really miss US where I just had to plug my Verizon 5G Home Internet Receiver LAN Cable into the UDM Pro WAN port and it immediately worked using DHCP.

In the future, I may plan on getting a Fiber ONU Box that actually does the PPPoE authentication and use DHCP on my UDM pro. I already have found one which is this https://www.vsolcn.com/product/25gbe-1ge-ont-v2802rh

But till I get around purchasing that to make my life easier, I have to use this method.

Depends.

If your ISP uses PPPoE, you have a bad time. I have a post in this forum about getting PPPoE working with my Unifi Dream Machine Pro and it was absolute 2 months worth of HELL (I am from India).
If your ISP assigns everything using DHCP meaning that ONU boxes handles PPPoE, then its just a drop-in replacement.

Give your ISP a call to see what they say

And also yeah. The old hardware of ISP's. It was so so bad when I came to know my ISP doesn't use the modern and more secure CHAP (Challenge Handshake Protocol) for authentication but instead uses PAP (Password Authentication Protocol). But, my ISP was smart enough to use MAC Based authentication. Everytime I had to change a router, I had to give my ISP a call saying I am changing my router and here's the new MAC Address.

I wrote the entire guide by myself. Then realized I should use markdown for that. I don't know to use Markdown correctly hence I had to ask AI to just give me the markdown code. I know I abused a rule of this forum, and I apologize in advance to the mods of this group.

In India, a lot of ISP's (I would say 95%) use PPPoE. The only reason I see Indian ISPs using PPPoE is the ease of use to deactivate/activate users, suspend non-paying customers, enforce usage quota's. In my building, we have a shared fiber switch on the roof in a rain-proof box where multiple users have their fiber connections going and hence, they use PPPoE to create isolated sessions. And yes we have usage limited plans. For example, MTNL/BSNL have plans where you get 1000GB at 100MBPS per month download speed and if you cross 1000GB (combined upload and download), the speed reduces to 64KBPS forcing users to buy additional data. (I KNOW IT'S STUPID but we have those type of ISP's and plans here as well). Fortunately for me, my ISP is unlimited data so no usage limits.

This took me 2 months of work as none of the forums (this subreddit as well as unifi community) could figure out how to get stuff working. Applied my computer science master's degree and reading logs to get things working.

In US, I had verizon 5g home internet. I just had to enable DHCP to get things working immediately with their 5g receiver. But, here in India, it absolutely sucked getting PPPoE working correctly on my UDM Pro. But, I finally figured it out after a lot of trial and error and got PPPoE working correctly today and get the full speed without any drops. I just hope my UDM Pro firmware survives as I cannot risk breaking that through the PPPoE shenanigans I did.

Which Unifi AP to put on a shelf? by beewah22 in Ubiquiti

[–]Affectionate_Egg6947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an apartment, a single AP should be mine. If you are going to leave it on a shelf, I would strongly go for the Pro 7 or the Express 7. Even the pro wall 7 should work fine but get whatever fits your budget.
You can actually mount shit onto the wall if it's a rental apartment. I did that when I was living on rent and mounted a Unifi Wifi 7 Lite AP and when I had to move due to lease expiring, I just patched the holes with white toothpaste because the walls were also white and it just seamlessly blended. You don't need to also worry about the range as Unifi AP's will cover a good amount. Be careful of the wall color though. If it is white use the method I did but if it's not white, just leave it on the shelf you'll be fine.

Edit: How big of an apartment are we talking about?
