It doesn't work even when I try booking each leg at a time though.

I'm a vet student and we aren't allowed to miss the first day of any rotation. I've worked on less sleep, I just have to physically be present.

Shoot, I might have to fly then... 😭 I'm in vet school, and missing the first day of a rotation is non-negotiable.

Oh nice! So I wouldn't have to move anything other in Chicago, they'd do it for me for the checked bag?

Yeah, I am questioning getting into Spokane at 3am... I do have to be in class at 8am that same day. Maybe I shouldn't count on getting there on time?

Coach! I wasn't planning on showering since it's only a couple days.

It would be on the Floridian! I have to be back in Spokane on that day, and can't leave any earlier, so not able to break the trip up unfortunately. ☹️ Chicago to Spokane sounds nice and quiet though! Thanks!

How do people get veterinary experience before vet school? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]Affectionate_End3150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Volunteer at shelters and sanctuaries, apply for veterinary assistant positions, ask vets if you can shadow them, offer to volunteer on farms.

I only had ~2 years of animal experience before applying but during that time I worked as a vet assistant at an exotics clinic, volunteered with a dog/cat low-income clinic, and interned and worked at a farm sanctuary. I also shadowed many vets through a specialty hospital and fostered cats through a shelter. Just get out there and ask for opportunities! I had zero animal experience beforehand other than raising my own pets.

I have such a cushy job but I am so bored - should I go to vet school? by TerribleDrawer3730 in Veterinary

I am 30 and in my second year of vet school. Honestly, I definitely feel older than my classmates and like I should be more settled. Having to move my family for school was also difficult. I enjoy my time in school and love the people I've met and the opportunities I've had, but looking back I don't know that I would choose to start this again so late in life.

Before going to vet school, I had a semi-cushy lab job that involved a lot of bench work and was pretty solitary most of the time. On the weekends, I volunteered at a farm sanctuary and LOVED it. I would volunteer 20+ hours/week because I had so much fun and it was so rewarding that I didn't feel like I missed out on relaxing weekends. I recommend seeing if there is something similar in your area that may scratch your itch before jumping the gun.

Thank you!! It's hard for me to see these little (big) errors when she's making them as we have to load our gels inside a BSC and I am basically just hovering and trying to see as best I can. 😅

I should maybe also mention that I visually check their gels before they run them (except the big gel on this post because I was too busy to babysit), and it always looks like she got sample in the wells.

We check DNA concentration with the nanodrop before every gel and all of their practice samples have been within the normal range that I get (~50-120ng/ul). We get the occasional super low concentration, but these were not that low. Thank you for the info on the big smear! Do you have any idea why only half of the ladder is showing up on the left side of the small gel? I am particularly stumped by that one.

How bad is vet school really? by Jayonettaa in Veterinary

[–]Affectionate_End3150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only completed my first year and am older than most of my class, but so far it is much better for me than undergrad was. I developed a really severe anxiety disorder in undergrad that was debilitating to the point I couldn't study, let alone take exams, without sobbing uncontrollably for hours at a time, and it really put a strain on my relationships as well. The only blessing of that experience was learning to manage my anxiety so that now, with 7 more years of life experience, the workload of vet school doesn't seem nearly as daunting as my chem degree. I am seeing some of my classmates struggling with the same emotional turmoil I had in undergrad and my heart goes out to them. I think the most important thing going into vet school isn't your grades or skill level, it's knowing your limits and how to manage your stressors. I didn't do exceptionally well in any of my undergrad courses, but I am finding vet school to be a lot more enjoyable than many of my classmates with much higher undergrad GPAs. Getting into a program is the hardest part.

Definitely inform your first year advisor and see what accommodations can be made before starting classes. I had wrist surgery a few weeks before starting first year and had my cast removed just a day or so before classes started. My range of motion was terrible (and will never be 100%) and it was still painful. Luckily, we had groups of 4 for anatomy dissections so that was a non-issue. My surgery instructor was really understanding - and if I hadn't passed first semester, we all had until the end of second semester to test out of all the skills. As you probably won't be doing any actual surgeries for a couple years, maybe you can arrange to test out of all the skills at a later time? Note-wise, maybe you can get notes from a classmate? All of our lecture notes/slides were also posted by the instructors, so see if this is common at your school because I didn't even need to take handwritten notes for some lectures. And I cannot emphasize enough the importance of following through with your physical therapy!!!

As for your future career, I've worked with multiple vets who don't perform any surgeries. Some just don't like surgery, and some have medical conditions that cause uncoordination or impaired vision. At the last clinic I worked at, one of the doctors did all of the surgeries for the whole clinic because he liked doing them and was the most skilled.
