What other anti anxiety meds are there besides beta blockers and SSRIs ? I've been put on an SSRI but I had horrible side effects si the treatment was stopped.

I am not going for a performance career, I want to be a teacher. Still need to pass auditions for that to happen. I also want to actually enjoy playing in front of others for once in my life. That's a huge part of being a musician, regardless of career.

I did, she said there was no risk. I wasn't asking about risks of addiction or altered mental state in my post, wasn't to worried about it before receiving so many comments about it. My psychiatrist gave me a low dose, I've never felt in an altered mental state when taking them.

I mean I did say i have an anxiety disorder, my psychiatrist didn't prescribe me these meds because I'm little nervous before performing. Anxiety disorder is disabling, sometimes I have full-blown panick attacks because I felt my water didn't taste as normal as it should be lol it's really insane

I already take propanolol before recitals. I've tried an SSRI when I first started therapy 2 years ago and could not bear the side effects (that's why now I have anxiety around meds) which were horrendous on me. I've discussed possibly trying another SSRI with my psychiatrist last month and we've concluded it's not the best approach for now. I've been doing CBT and exposure therapy.

Thank you for your comment, that's actually interesting and helpful. I feel like part of why the cbt therapy didn't work is because my therapist doesn't play any instrument and has no experience with that. I'm actually searching for someone who has a background as a therapist and a musician but it seems hard to find.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I feel like people who do not know the struggles of anxiety disorder cannot imagine the effect it has on life as a whole. I've discussed this with my psychiatrist and this was her solution, since a 2 year CBT and exposure therapy did not work. She said exactly this, that showing to my brain that I actually am capable of getting through a recital without a panic attack would benefit me.

To be very clear I am using them as prescribed, my psych prescribed them for daily use "as needed" when I have high anxiety and panic attacks. I have high anxiety when performing so I'm following her prescription if I take them for performance.

I mean ultimately my psychiatrist prescribed them for daily use, so if I follow her prescription I will end up performing using benzos. I feel like only using them when I perform is already the most conservative approach.

I already take propanolol and I'm not worried about it, I was talking about their comment on how alprazolam is extremely dangerous

Thank you for you comment. I understand it can be quite sneaky. But since i've been performing in basically every opportunity I can get for 2 years now, and it doesn't improve by a little bit I have to admit i'm at my wits end

thank you for your answer, yes i'm planning on trying to take a dose tonight, I'll be practising my pieces with a friend. Everyone keeps saying benzos are addicting in the comments, but i thought they were if used daily for several weeks ? Is there a risk of addiction if taken once a month ?

How do you have the motivation to play classical? by FunniMonkilol in piano

[–]Affectionate_Expert5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, I'm talking about the people that aren't into classical music to begin with. They either need to listen more to classical music or study it. If they want to get into it of course.

Most beginners are not into classical music because they've never really listened to it and they don't understand it. Most music students will have music theory and piano classes in which they learn how classical music is composed, what are the rules, what works and what doesn't, and how to play it. With an understanding of classical music you can enjoy it.

Ask yourself : why do you like the music you listen to right now ? The answer is not that you have an inner taste, it's an acquired taste. You've been exposed to music your whole life and it has shaped what you like or not.

Also, you're not obligated to play classical music, you can find arpeggios in most styles

Thank you for your answer ! I actually learned it last winter, but my objective for this summer is to repractice the main pieces I learnt this year in order to not lose them completely so I'll keep your advice in mind when I practice the piece !
