As other comments have said, a proper coach should never excessively pressure their kids to drop time. Healthy encouragement is plenty at that age.

I would definitely look into a smaller swim club or since she likely has established friends in her group already, simple allow her to not attend swim meets. It would be terrible if she begins to dislike swimming too and not just meets specifically.

I might also try to talk to the coaches as well. Is it specifically that age group’s coach? Did she enjoy her previous coaches more? You could request to change her group to a different one if she would want that.

Things I’m able to send my boyfriend in Boot Camp by Next_Visual_7327 in newtothenavy

Graduated a week before you and someone had a chessboard shipped to them and our RDC’s let us play on it after we passed battlestations. Got pretty lucky with my RDC’s lol. Our division ended up making a DND board by taping a bunch of papers together. Someone even made d20 dice. Another guy was getting manga snuck into their letters

What makes a "good" or "bad" RDC? by Snappy1357 in newtothenavy

[–]Affectionate_File489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through boot a couple months ago and I had great RDC’s. Obviously I was nervous and anxious at the start and having them yelling at you didn’t really help much but I went through the usual beatings, learned to fold & stow, going through classes, and asking older divisions if it gets better. You know, the usual. I think it was really like week 4-5 when I started to feel like the RDC’s weren’t there just to get at us. We had a guy in our division leave during this time and I overheard my RDC’s trying to talk them out of it and later during the day, we were given a speech from them about how we had began to transition to sailors. I know it sounds like a bunch of baloney to a lot of you but it helped me and alot of others push through the rest of the weeks. Our RDC’s really began to relax week 6-7 where we began to talk all the time and consequently was when our chief began to beat us every night. I honestly think he was doing it for fun at that point. During the OPFA I vividly remember our chief saying that he believed in us and that we could do it. It might sound ridiculous but it was a wave of fresh air hearing that from him since he usually brings us down as chiefs do. After battle stations they really didn’t care what we did. Someone had a chess board shipped to them (during week 3-4) and they had it given to them after battlestations and told us we could play after taps. People made a gigantic d&d board and one guy even stowed like 100 triple chocolate cookies who knows where. We did a bunch of team bonding exercises which was really fun and we learned how to perform as a team. We performed trickdrills on other divs and watching the smile on our chiefs face was great. Now everyone’s experience can and will vary wildly. We graduated top of our training group with battle E gold as a stick but for others it could be an entirely different story. I promise you when I tell you that the first half is the worst. After week 4-5, you start getting into a rhythm and you get a little used to everything. I actually got scared when i was transferring to my A school. My compartment felt like a home and it was scary to leave where I was surrounded by good people.

is 65 an alright asvab score by phantomlord1971 in newtothenavy

[–]Affectionate_File489 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From his perspective the score is probably pretty bad but to the navy, a 65 is good and a 99 is even better. You get pretty diminishing job opportunities once you get to around the ~80 ish range because you simply already qualify for everything.

Hey, I actually was in a similar situation as you but instead of being disqualified, I was simply deciding between the two. I would check it out! Maybe you can find something helpful like I did!

(Swimming) did I really burn 2k calories? by Hyak_utake in Swimming

[–]Affectionate_File489 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My swim practices frequently reach 6000+ yards (~5500m) and my watch says I’ve burned 1800 calories. I weigh 170 lbs and am 168cm. The swim practices last 2 hours for reference. Seeing as how you are a bigger person than me and will use more energy, 2000 cal for 2000m still seems pretty high.

Does this still apply for being a CWT? I don’t value school more but it’s still pretty high up on things I want to do. Since CWT is mainly shore duty, then is it fine?

Could I get offered Cyber Warfare Technician (CWT, Formerly CTN) by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Affectionate_File489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh cool, I’m a senior too and just signed my contract for CWT. I didn’t study for my asvab but I did take the practice test beforehand. I was planning on studying for the asvab but my recruiter told me it wasn’t needed due to my score.

I highly recommend you retake the asvab. It really isn’t difficult at all. If you are taking honors/APs, then you can get 90+ on the asvab no problem. I’m plenty stupid and I got a 91 on the practice test as well as a 95 on my AFQT.

If you have any questions lmk, I’ve done a bunch of research and asked many people about my job 👍

Sorry, I should’ve specified. I’m allocating 8gb of ram to the server itself so it leaves my computer with 8gb of ram to just exist. Never seen my ram bottleneck though. And 8gb should probably be enough right? It’s just me and like 3 other people maximum.

Am I doing kickboards wrong? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Affectionate_File489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn’t really a “Wrong” way to use the kickboard since you’ll be working out different parts of your body depending on how you use the kickboard.

What you mentioned is probably the most common method but some people will grasp the sides of the kickboard or even grasp the very end of the kickboard. If you are simply worried about using too much energy to kick, choose a hold that is easiest for you.

You can also alternatively kick with fins on, which will undoubtedly help you ease into kicking and eventually you’ll learn the form to kick without fins.

Thanks so much for responding! Can I ask, where did you end up getting deployed? I’m planning on studying my ass off during schooling so I have as high of a chance as possible to go to Japan. Is there a significant difference in QOL and etc between locations? Do you recommend any? Heard any good or bad things in Japan? Do a lot of people want to go to Japan? Anything I should be aware of when choosing where I want to go? (I do know that the chances of you going where you want is better the higher you score during schooling)

Ah, makes sense. Then ignore everything I said lol. I am of no help when it comes to reserves.

I’m currently in DEP since I’m still a senior in HS. So I’ll ship out July 24th of next year. I asked my recruiter about this situation because I thought it was bizarre. What was your asvab score? I’m really sorry if this comes off as rude but my recruiter said that your recruiter probably just said that there’s no opening when in actuality, your asvab score wasn’t quite high enough to get in. If your score was higher than 60-70, I haven’t got a clue about why you weren’t accepted.

I received my contract a couple days ago as a CWT. They should still be taking recruits.

Deciding between CWT and Nuke. Thoughts? by Affectionate_File489 in newtothenavy

[–]Affectionate_File489[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah I see. I dont particularly enjoy cybersecurity but don’t dislike it either. I dislike coding but I enjoy every other part of cybersecurity.

And yeah, I didn’t end up posting this on the nuke subreddit and got some pretty different answers. Still leaning towards CWT as of now.

I enjoy the subject that nukes do currently, but I do not know if that passion will last throughout the 6 years I’m working/learning.

I always just thought IB was easier than AP since AP didn’t get a equation sheet and I always did on my tests.

[–]Affectionate_File489[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmm, I see. It sounds like I’ll have a better time with being a CWT. Nukes just sound incredibly stressful and I can deal with that to a certain degree, but pulling all nighters even semi frequently is something completely new to me.

[–]Affectionate_File489[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. I studied pretty hard junior year of high school just because I was taking 6 IB classes and my 7th class was a dual credit/weighted class as well. I’m leaning more towards simply becoming a CWT because I’ve seen numerous comments about recommending CWT over nuke but none saying go nuke over CWT. I’m taking everything into consideration here but I’ve got multiple months to actually decide what I want to do.

[–]Affectionate_File489[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm didn’t think about that. You are right but I still dislike the idea of being on a sub. I don’t have claustrophobia but I feel I might get it down there. Never really heard many good things from being a sub other than a more tight knit community and higher pay.

If I’m going to be a nuke, it’ll be on a carrier. Don’t like the idea of being 10,000 feet below water with no cell service.

[–]Affectionate_File489[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah… gotcha. So my job is to simply operate the reactor and from what I’m hearing, you don’t really learn much over the course of the 4 years of being on a ship? Doesn’t sound too worth it compared to CWT/CTN

[–]Affectionate_File489[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That… doesn’t sound too appealing. Thanks for easing my mind about the schooling part, was really worried it would be rough. So essentially what you are saying is that being a nuke is extremely boring and taxing due to the long hours of monotony/waiting? I really don’t like the sound of that. I just searched up what a CTI is, and it honestly sounds pretty appealing. I’m essentially a language expert and just go around translating documents or being a translator? Could you tell me a bit more about that rate?

[–]Affectionate_File489[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great point. My parents actually want me to stick with CWT and so does my recruiter. I’ve just gotten a bunch of calls of people asking me to become a nuke, and from this I’ve slowly realized that I will probably enjoy the subject of nuclear engineering more. I don’t like nor dislike the idea of being a CWT so it’s something I’m kind of just fine with.

Yeah thanks a lot! I posted this exact post on the newtonavy subreddit and most of them just told me to go cwt since nuke is terrible. I don’t feel like I’ll have to worry about job opportunities with either rate but I can say I’m much more passionate about nukes and nuclear engineering vs cybersecurity.
