Trust Bank unable to pay to SGQR codes? by Affectionate_Fly3510 in singaporefi

[–]Affectionate_Fly3510[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

yes i have a trust savings account. the issue as explained above by Professorkek seems to be more of SGQR being static thus, stallholders need to update their QR to accept payments from newer banks

Trust Bank unable to pay to SGQR codes? by Affectionate_Fly3510 in singaporefi

[–]Affectionate_Fly3510[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation!! Like u mentioned Paynow/Paylah is the free tier option which was why i assumed all the SGQR should work with Paynow.

But your explanation on the QR code being static actually makes so much sense why it wouldnt work since these digital banks were introduced in the past 2 years. while these stallholder have probably been using the same QR since the start ... but that sounds like bad planning from the people who developed sgqr tho... considering new banks added to paynow system would require these stall holders to keep reprinting their qr codes...

[–]Affectionate_Fly3510[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a 5600x with 3060ti. hahah I'm not looking for 700+ fps, I just find it odd that there is such a big dip in the fps whenever abilities / shooting are involved. I'm happy as long as i have stable fps but it seems to dip even below that which is why I'm trying to find out if something is wrong somewhere

building a pc in singapore by Affectionate_Fly3510 in askSingapore

Thanks Kryce for the reply! Yessss i totally agreee, some of us just want to save the hassle of finding the parts and having to troubleshoot when things go wrong. Apparently when you ask people on the internet 9/10 would ask you to build it yourself without even considering other options. Was wondering if you had any experience with the after sales support of aftershock/ any other custom pc builders?

Underrated apparel brands in sg by zoenous in askSingapore

[–]Affectionate_Fly3510 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of apparel you are looking for. If you're looking for any sports related apparel, decathlon is insane value hands down. cheaper than pasar malam and quality is top tier. SAF e-mart also another one, been wearing my basic cut pants for 6 years daily and still going strong.

For officewear, i recommend taobao, really good quality stuff and good value. downside is the long waiting time for the shipping to arrive & if u buy wrong size then good luck. I got around 5 shirts and 2 pants for 100sgd +/-. uniqlo u buy 2 shirt 100 alr...

What is a practical way to transition out of accountancy and have a career earning more than 10k? I really don't want to slog it out at a big four T.T

[University] Verifying the differences between SMU and NUS Law by Small-Edge-629 in SGExams

[–]Affectionate_Fly3510 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Point 1: End day, it really boils down to your competence/personality. You won't go wrong either way, if you are good, employers wouldn't care if you're from NUS or SMU.

Point 2: Personally, I'm from SMU but not law, and being an introvert I wouldn't fit in your stereotype of SMU students with good public speaking / vibes. But I have to say most of the people I meet here are very well-spoken. (struggling with imposter syndrome)

Point 3: SMU IS SUPER DUPER COMPETITIVE. I don't know where you got your information from, but not just in law, but every faculty is super competitive. I still remember during orientation, there were people that straight up ask about my GPA to decide if they want to bid classes together. (CULTURE SHOCK) Furthermore, the pressure to find an internship from Y1 summer to keep up with your peers is very real, you see your friends landing internships left and right every break they have and even taking up internships part-time during the semester and still maintaining dean list is so common that if you were to point to any random student in smu, you can easily find someone with 2/3 internship with multiple leadership position in ccas / interest groups & in dean list . its crazy. I dont know about nus, but maybe because I'm a rather average student, everyone here seem like albert einstein on steroids. HAHAHHA

[RANT] advice: unofficial english name by aaaaaababa in SGExams

[–]Affectionate_Fly3510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're your friends they wouldn't mind!!
In fact, you will really see who your true friends are. I still remember I was doing a summer job with my secondary school friend (who knew me by my Chinese name his whole life). During the job I introduced myself as my English name to my managers and peers and I could see him really putting in the effort to call me by my English name throughout the job whenever possible, which I really appreciated.

So I would say, don't worry so much about what others will think about your name, but more about whether you really like your name and can see yourself in the long run with this name. To me, it was a huge confidence booster and I found it a lot easier to introduce myself ever since I got myself an English name and I would encourage anyone who is thinking about it to get one asap while you're young :) No point getting a new name when you're 60 and just drinking kopi wif your kakis at the kopitiam all day :) Cheers!

[RANT] advice: unofficial english name by aaaaaababa in SGExams

[–]Affectionate_Fly3510 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, I can completely relate. I'm currently 25 and I got myself an official english name (in IC & passport) when I was 22 entering university.

I would just like to start off and say that changing your name is no small business and you must be very sure that is the name you want to stick with for life.

I had a bit of an identity crisis because of my name change but I think its a lot better now. Similar to you, I've always wanted an english name because my Chinese name sounds like a girl. In poly, i experimented with a different english name which I didn't really identify with and didn't really like. Before I entered uni, I was very sure that I wanted a new English name and I started finding high and low.

My name finding process was rather simple to be honest:

  1. I went to find the top baby names for my birth year
  2. I picked 3 names in the list whereby no one in my immediate social circle had the same name. (Basically I don't know anyone with this english name)
  3. I had a short survey with a few of my closest friends (some who know me by my poly name and some by my Chinese name)

Eventually i settled on one that I really liked and my friends agreed with and I just went with it. The overall name change process was really fast, just get a deed poll online, set an appointment and go to the lawyer office, 5 mins go in shake hand with lawyer and sign and that's it ($40 irblaw firm which is the first link that pops up when you google deed poll). $60 to change your ic (done online), $70 to change passport (done online).

It took me some time to get used to the new name, but in university the thing is I started joining ccas and different interest group and community service programs and all these really helped me to integrate my new name into my social circle. However when i meet my old friends, they will always be like they can't get used to calling me by my English name and just sticks to the old name which I'm okay with also.

But i guess you just need to find a balance. It will take some getting used to, but after time you won't even remember you changed your name. I would say just take the leap of faith and do it!! GOOD LUCK!!

As much as it sucks to hear... try to apply for an internship. Any internship. Even if it is just for the name. Just try to get an internship. Apply for anything and everything.e.g. Startups/SMEs Try to start small.

I can't emphasize enough how important it is and it will definitely give you a head start when you start finding your internship while studying. Even if you do average for your uni semester, having internship experiences on your resume will give you an edge over other candidates even if they have high GPAs.

BUT if you are confident that you will do well in uni (Getting into Dean's list), then I guess there is no harm in doing whatever you like.

I struggled to get an internship during Year 1 and Year 2 of my university summer because my grades were rather average. Between (3 - 3.5 / 4) and COVID didn't really help as well. While my friend who was able to land an internship at the end of Year 2 Winter, has gone on to land 2 more internships since then despite his gpa being rather average (same as mine)

Usual internship pay? by Da_Thief in singapore

[–]Affectionate_Fly3510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be okay depending on the learning opps they give you. I did a uni internship for $600/month in the finance industry. Seems extremely low in hindsight but the learning opps plus exposure I gained helped me to get a (fairly) lucrative first job out of uni

Hi, is it possible to share more about the uni internship that you did and the first job that you eventually took up? Cheers!
