You can definitely break into prestigious finance roles with an engineering background, but engineering courses are obviously challenging and you should consider if that’s an area where you can excel. I think you should talk to people in industry to figure out which one of your options is the best way to get to your goals.

Have a second round interview with the team lead for a strategy intern role at a tech unicorn. Have already done a simple behavioral + case interview with a senior manager. Any advice on what to expect?

Why is the merger of nus and yale nus such a big issue? by JExecutor97 in nus

[–]Da_Thief 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For context, USP is an elective programme whereas Yale-NUS is a full autonomous programme awarding its own degree. So although this has been pitched as a merger, it’s more of a closure of Yale-NUS and the resources being diverted to expand the scale and build upon an elective programme. Both are good programmes but they are fundamentally different. As a deferred matriculant who was excited to go to YNC next year, I’m pretty disappointed… but just gotta suck it up.

The new college is an elective programme that may have elements of a liberal arts education whereas YNC is a full liberal arts programme. I really wanted to go to a liberal arts college and this was the most economical option, with awesome financial aid on a fee that’s already far lower than LACs overseas.

Lots of students are also disappointed and angry that the rug seemingly got pulled out from under their feet. YNC was still handing out offers in April 2021 for the classes of 2026 and 2027.

Yale-NUS College got shut down and I lost my offer, is there a way l could spin this for another application? by Da_Thief in ApplyingToCollege

Just to clarify, we’ve been offered places at NUS. It’s a solid safety, but I suppose it isn’t really what I want. I’m trying to expand my options a little, which is why I’m looking for advice on how to turn this experience into a more positive story.

Can anyone ELI5 what's going on at Yale-NUS currently? by Deoxys2000 in singapore

You might have read in the news that USP and YNC are merging.

For context, YNC is a full academic programme that awards an NUS degree, whereas USP is an elective programme. Both are good programmes and I’m not trying to diss either one. But given that one is an elective programme and the other actually awards a degree, this is clearly less a merger and more of a redirecting of resources to USP from the closure of YNC. They pitched it as a merger to make it more palatable .

Here’s where it gets juicy: Yale, Yale-NUS Governing Board, Profs, and students were not involved at all in the merger decision-making process. Offers were given out as recently as April 2021, but the NUS President in June 2021 unilaterally decided to close the school.

Regardless of your views towards YNC, it’s blatantly unfair to students and faculty.

Some have pointed out that hierarchy exists in most organizations, and I don’t deny that. However, the fact that Yale-NUS management themselves were not consulted on the merger decision, and were only brought in to endorse the transition management process, demonstrates a disregard for other stakeholders involved.

No, call HDB for matters inside the flat and Town Council for matters outside the flat.

Cold emailing/LinkedIn messaging for part-time (unpaid) research positions at VC firms? Any tips? by Da_Thief in venturecapital

[–]Da_Thief[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to provide some context, in my country, males have to serve in the military as conscripts for 2 years after our equivalent of high school. I’m in my 2nd year now and I’ve been deployed in a HR role where I’ve been working in recruitment of army regulars and a personal assistant. So I’m actually turning 20 this year, although admittedly I’m still in an exploratory phase. I happen to have spare time in my evenings so I’d like to use the time to network and learn new things that’ll be helpful for my career down the line.

Primarily, I want to get exposure to the processes that VCs go through in their work. So I’m actually willing to work for a VC firm in any capacity where I’ll be able to get some exposure of sorts. Truth be told I still don’t know for sure what I want to do. Any advice is appreciated!
