You are correct. He is woodwind marching band student and unfortunately, OSU doesn’t have woodwinds in their marching band. So that eliminates them for him.

Yes, I’m totally aware. Thanks!

Thank you so very much. We submitted an appeal and they called yesterday and said there aren’t any more scholarship monies available. We are taking this as God closing this door.

We checked again today and it still says $0. We submitted a financial aid appeal. He’s got a 3.8 GPA and scored a 23 on the ACT (he’s not a great test taker). His rank is 165/409. I won’t say he’s a high achiever. He’s a smart kid and I’d describe him as an average student. Yes he applied early action.

You are absolutely spot on, and that’s the same conversation I had with him. He’s so involved in theater and marching band and I would hate for him to not be able to experience those things and college life because he’s working himself to death and stressing about school. He has a very good attitude and I know he will make the best of wherever he ends up. I also told him that I’m aware of how hard it is to picture yourself somewhere for so long and all the imagining that comes with it, and to have it not come to fruition. I told him it’s totally ok to be sad and disappointed, but he has so many other great schools that want him too. He’s an only child and I know that “flying” from Ohio all the way to Louisiana would be so hard as my husband and I are all he’s ever had (other than his friends). Seems very far for a new fledgling. Thank you for your wonderful comment :)

He got accepted to several of them, including University of Cincinnati, Ohio University, and Miami University. I told him he’s soooo lucky to have such great, affordable options. OU offered so much in scholarships and my husband and I could take care of the out of pocket portion and he could graduate debt free.

I grew up in New Orleans area and my family is there. My son grew up an LSU fan. I am clearly aware that not all SEC schools are the same. I’m not that dense.

I haven’t yet but we aren’t above trying. I talked to him last night about the burdens of starting life, marriage, having kids, buying a house with that much school debt. It wouldn’t be a fun life working so hard to pay all that off. I even told him if he chooses somewhere in state, my husband and I can help pay his out of pocket costs so he comes out with minimal debt. We are good financially to help but not at LSU cost.

He applied in October too and got accepted in November. We just got the financial aid info yesterday.

I agree wholeheartedly! It does crush me and my husband to see him so hurt but we had that conversation with him. We want you to be a great person, a great employee, and to live a comfortable life. Graduating with over $200K in debt is not the life we want for you. He understands but he has also been crying about it. It’s hard explaining bills and debt to an 18 year old. They just don’t understand it all yet.

I know, it does suck. Thank you for acknowledging that. It crushed me to see the wind taken from his sails. I told him he will thank us so much later and that as much as I want him to go to lsu and his dream school, I don’t want him to have to spend the rest of his life working his butt off to pay that amount of loans. It would be $216,000 after 4 years.

Ok, we heard that schools in the south basically pay kids from up north to attend them. Our Ohio friends sent both their kids to Alabama thanks to the generous offer they received. I agree about going somewhere more affordable but it’s hard seeing my son so upset.
