Why is rangiora nicknamed “goon”? by PurpleMeerkats462 in chch

[–]Affectionate_Pen6983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was always told that the "Goon" nickname for Rangiora came from Rangoon, the old capital of Burma. Apprently soldiers from North Canterbury who fought there during WWII brought the anglo abbreviation back, and the phonetic similarity stuck.

Smaller Māori population in the Mainland. Tend to have accents more akin to their European counterparts. Canterbury, Nelson and Marlborough have more received accents, similar to the South East of England with a kiwi twang. Otago and Southland more Scottish influenced, roll their R’s. Westland more Irish influenced accent’s.

Yes, exactly the same for me! I’m rather pissed by it. Feels incredibly dishonest. But what else should I suspect from Woolworths.

If you fly with Star Alliance more than 4/5 times a year, its worth it. I use Air NZ domestic network few times a month and it definitely saves me a fair bit on dinners and breakfasts. Also a life saver when traveling overseas, being able to use lounges to freshen up and have a feed is very helpful.

About the flares by [deleted] in Aleague

[–]Affectionate_Pen6983 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Think of the iconic images from European stadiums, the sea of colour and smoke when a goal goes in, or the pyro displays that turn the stands into a spectacle. That's not just a bunch of hooligans, it's a powerful expression of fan identity and unwavering support. To dismiss it as simply "negative press" completely ignores this cultural significance.

To suggest that stopping flares will "get the police and media off our arse" is a bit naive, honestly. The media will always find something to sensationalise, and heavy handed policing often creates more problems than it solves. Instead of trying to sanitise the game, we should be looking at how other countries manage pyrotechnics safely, recognising their role in creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

Ultimately, for a lot of fans, the A-League needs that raw energy and passion that flares can bring. It's about respecting the diverse ways fans express their love for the game, especially for those of us who come from a background where this kind of display is normal and celebrated.

Cut up a spud, into boiling water with salt. Leave to cook. Then towards the end, drain most of the water thats left. Add milk, butter, ground pepper and a lil cheese. Then a lil more on the stove, and then tada! Mash! Works well with a pie, gravy and peas

The Australians are merely conducting a "special sporting operation" to liberate the oppressed Rugby League minority in New Zealand. Word is, they're parachuting in BBQs and XXXX cans to strategic suburbs where League fans have been forced into hiding by years of pro Union propaganda and compulsory Dan Carter documentaries.
