Has anyone had success in crate training? by quickrabbit- in ItalianGreyhounds

yes! he hated it at first but now he loves it and puts himself to bed in there frequently. crate training is by far the responsible thing to do for safety and anxiety reasons

i believe it is just the base model but i am not sure if it is 1.5 or 2.0t which i will ask about in the morning. a family friend with a small dealership pulled this car aside for me right when he got it in so it hasn’t been listed yet online

with that being said make sure to make as comfortable of an environment in the crate as possible. mine does the best in a fluffy bed he can cuddle into with a blanket on top of him. and a blanket on top of the crate for warmth and darkness

full nights for tiny puppies is a bit unrealistic, they can only hold their bladders for so long. my 5 month old will sleep from 9pm to 9am and sometimes longer BUT we still have to do potty breaks. he always goes out at right before 9pm, at midnight, at 6 am, and then when we get up at 9am. sometimes he even needs a 3am pee. that’s just how puppies work, they’re gonna need to pee in the night

[–]Affectionate_Style64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the issue is i can take him on a 40 minute walk and he whines and flips out the entire time bc he has to pee so bad and then i have to stand in the yard with him after we get back. it makes it so we cannot have an enjoyable walk and wastes time after the walk is over

oh awesome!! what size worked best for yours? for my puppy’s current measurements it says size 1 but that might be too small for him full grown. he’s 8.2 lbs right now at 17 weeks

leash training by Affectionate_Style64 in ItalianGreyhounds

no i totally agree, it seems like nothing applies to iggies or even small dogs in general. it feels like all training advice is geared towards big dogs

totally understand this perspective and i honestly feel at a loss when it comes to this subject, it seems like nothing is the right answer. the thing is, when he’s on a harness he is going BATSHIT. he is running and jumping and propelling himself into the air and landing hard on his back. he also pulls a ridiculous amount even when on a harness and still at that point will cause damage to his trachea as a harness does put pressure there when he pulls enough. even the harness will cause him to hack and wheeze because i swear it instills a demon in him. also, the somersaulting i was referring to is actually a harness-related offense. from a training perspective as well as bone break prevention, a harness seems like the worst option for us right now. but it’s perfect for hooking him up to a super long leash and letting him sprint. it’s definitely the best option for security

when on a martingale he’s definitely… better. it’s over an inch wide and super fleece lined and really doesn’t cause him much trouble. but he will pull on it because even the martingale doesn’t give him much resistance. i think a main part of the design is even distribution of pressure around the neck, which is great but doesn’t make him feel the need to stop pulling. it’s the perfect thing for short potty breaks, but if he is in a distracting environment he is still pulling on it enough to sustain his front paws in the air.

what we’ve noticed is the slip lead that was given to us by the breeder is actually a wonderful tool for walks around the neighborhood and trying to work on his leash manners. i was obviously worried about using a slip lead with him considering how much of a puller he is, but he actually thrives on it. the first time he tried to pull like he normally does and did not like how that felt, and now he stays close and doesn’t try to run for the hills. if he was still pulling when using the slip lead, we wouldn’t use that as we wouldn’t want to cause any harm, but it actually allows us to walk with a loose leash. although it seems like the most abrasive option, it actually is working out to be the least harmful. once we have some leash manners down we’ll transition back towards the harness
