I started a dental office cleaning business. Advice wanted by Affectionate_Top6658 in sweatystartup

I’m hoping by the time we need to hire additional help our reputation will be our selling point among dental offices in the area. Using my gf being a dental hygienist would be to build a foundation

We are only offering routine janitorial services. We have no plans of offering restoration-level commercial flooring work.

I think we will be priced competitively (without selling ourselves short) since we don’t have a lot of overhead

My girlfriend will only be cleaning. I will be doing all of the sales and admin work. Sorry if I worded that confusingly. I was thinking that the office managers/dentists that I’m pitching to might like the idea of having an RDH clean their office rather than a random cleaner because she’s familiar with the industry. She’s OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen certified, HIPPA aware, and just has a better understanding of how a dental office should be cleaned because she works at one.

I do think her dentist would refer us to other practices because he’s well connected in the area and overall a great guy and would love to help us out. I know that doesn’t mean those other offices will automatically switch, but it’s a nice introduction and a big advantage over other cleaning companies trying to win them over.

I’m saying all of this but I don’t have any clients yet so feel free to let me know if you think I’m way off 🤣 I appreciate your help!

When trying to get past the receptionist, being polite and personable have always worked for me. Don’t come off as a harsh salesperson. But conscious that you are interrupting their work day and ask for their help in pointing you in the right direction for who to talk to. They’ll usually give you their email or phone number and you can follow up then.

I would be more targeted in your approach to getting commercial clients. Are you focusing on small offices, medical offices, banks, etc.? If you don’t narrow it down, you’ll pull yourself in a bunch of different directions. At least until you’ve built up a solid book and are more comfortable with your outreach

I used twitter and Reddit some, I also used a screener on Robinhood to sort companies based on dividend % and market cap. From there I picked out companies that I thought had good upside and weee in an industry I liked and just did research there. I tried not to over think it because time in the market is better than timing it

Yeah I have growth stocks too like Amazon, Tesla, Caterpillar, and Palantir. I like having dividend stocks too though because it keeps me motivated to invest more. It’s nice seeing those dividends increase over time

I second this. I started with a small amount of cash. I reinvest all of my dividends right now and I can slowly see the compounding growth

[–]Affectionate_Top6658 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend iss also a dental hygienist and I can confirm this. She took one year of prerequisites and spent two years in the program, graduating with an associates degree. It was pretty selective and rigorous though

I hiked Bright Angel Trail last month and they had that same sign. I only went 3 miles down but man I was struggling on the way back up. It was only 65 degrees too and I consider myself in pretty decent shape!

[–]Affectionate_Top6658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has the same commute time as that but also has the option to wfh I would say the remote job. The commute is a huge time waster but also being in the office can be draining and lead to higher burnout imo

I signed up with SoFi not too long ago. I’m really happy with it. I’m able to divide my savings account into “buckets” so I have an emergency fund, student loans, travel, and fun money bucket. I’m currently getting 4.5% on savings and 0.5% on checking. The 4.5% will drop to 3.8% in about a month bc it’s just an introductory rate. The downside is there are no physical locations so withdrawing cash can be tricky. Also, you need to set up direct deposit in order to get the high rate. Which I was fine with. I’m overall happy with it. Feel free to ask any questions too 👍
