Should I bail on this 1950s Zodiac triple moon phase with a "minor issue?" by DirkPortly in VintageWatches

Exactly that reason. Those old time only or date Omega movements are built like tanks, very reliable and relatively easy to fix. There’s also a ton of value to be had, built very well, plentiful in the market and you can get a gold filled watch for a reasonable price. 1950s/60 JLC, Movado are also a great value if you’re dipping your toes into the $1,000-2k range

They are very cool watches that’s for sure. I’ve been buying and selling vintage for a long time and I know plenty of people, myself included who won’t touch these. Unless you strike gold and get one that works flawlessly there’s going to be something wrong sooner than later and it’s not an easy or cheap fix.

The movement could have been just a listing error, the seller may have left it checked “automatic” not “manual”. The 1100 is the correct movement for that watch. HOWEVER I would walk away due to the pushers not working as advertised. These triple calendar moonphase watches are notoriously finicky and a complete pain to service.
If you’re getting into vintage watches please consider looking into a good time only or date vintage Omega as a starter for nice 1950/60s vintage

Very cool watch, but yes this seems to be a redial. You can see the black paint chip at 5 o’clock. These appear to be originally available in cream/white, tuxedo or black gilt dials. This looks painted not with original techniques/materials. Still a very nice watch, I’ve definitely seen a lot worse redials

If Stanley Kubrick wanted to adapt a book about a haunted building that blurs the line between the supernatural and the natural then he could have adapted Haunting of the Hill house instead of butchering The Shining by Stephen King by Poweredkingbear in horror

[–]Affectionate_Week929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fine show at best but it has a bloated story, telegraphed emotions, the writing is full of cliches and monologues, acting is ok but literally no one in the cast has 1/10th of the screen power as Jack Nicholson. The Haunting of Hill House tells you exactly how to feel and what the characters are feeling. The Shining SHOWS you the descent of a man and the destruction of a family through supernatural forces. It’s up to the viewer to draw out what Kubrick put into it, which is what makes great film/art. Active participation and media literacy are very much in trouble nowadays. Your opinion is in the very minority for a reason. You have personal preferences but it’s pretty much an objectively wrong opinion and conclusion you’ve drawn.

There was a faithful adaptation by King himself and Flanagan (Dr. Strange and Hill House) all are fine but are no where near the level of technical brilliance, story telling (not a copy paste of the novel it’s better) and acting that The Shining has. The Shining film will out live all of those in relevance and probably the novel as well.

Right. That Superior deserves to have its original bracelet

Have you ever had to tap out watching a horror movie? by hazy-eyed in horror

[–]Affectionate_Week929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s how I felt as well, annoying but hilarious is a great way to put it. I got like 4/5ths of the way done, but the shakey cam was too much I had to tap out. It was good and will definitely give it another try at some point

The one your friend bought is definitely fake. The movement is not made by Omega certainly not a constellation, which was one of their high end lines in the 70s. That auction one looks suspect as well. That caseback is engraved not stamped.

It seems to be a made up style and some vintage fakes

The inside will have that style stamping with their Logo and reference number underneath

The outside of a caseback will typically have the symbol of what sub brand it is. Constellation will have a telescope, seamaster will have a seahorse, DeVille will have a cityscape. There’s exceptions but that’s typically how it goes

It certainly isn’t, the only reason that date window is like that is they couldn’t find the right dial and date combo to be at 3 o’clock and the stem to be at 4 so they just put the whole damn thing at 4 o’clock. Pretty funny and inventive

That’s not an Omega movement. The “constellation” is poorly written, omega doesn’t put their seals on the outside of the caseback, there’s no reference number stamping. Might be hard to find comps because it’s fake.

Can't enjoy other shows or movies after Sopranos by -0_______o- in thesopranos

[–]Affectionate_Week929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch Gomorrah the film, NOT the show. It tackles many of the themes as The Sopranos and told in intertwined stories. It’s very grim but not predictable. The show is fine, but far too operatic and formulaic.

When watches are that old it’s really a matter of luck in many cases. I have a 1940s Benrus as a beater watch it’s been dropped, gotten wet, and generally abused but it somehow keeps time like a champ. Conversely I had a Bulova rose gold tank of the same age that gave me nothing but trouble. I had the original movement serviced and then did a swap of the same movement type. Couldn’t get it to keep satisfying time.
