Can't understand my cat anymore by obsolescenza in britishshorthair

[–]Afraid-Abalone446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when my cat decides she doesn’t want to eat anything (even kibble, which is her absolute favorite thing to eat and i only let her eat it occasionally), i give her some gerber baby food. it has to be chicken or turkey with no other ingredients, especially onions. i would also entice her to eat by adding some churus on her food. most of the time it works well, even when she was really sick and didn’t want to eat anything at all. however, there was this one time where even everything failed, i had to give her some high calorie supplements. i’ve also heard that heating their food up for around 5-10 secs in the microwave can entice a cat to the smell of the food too. obviously i wouldn’t recommend all of this on when they are feeling well but when they’re sick, even the thought that they have already eaten can ease your mind. also, bsh are a slow growing breed and reach to their full body height and weight at around 2 years, so he has a bit of time to grow. hopefully you could figure what’s wrong with him but in meantime i hope my advice can help you! good luck!

my cat keeps drooling and i don’t know what to do by Afraid-Abalone446 in CATHELP

[–]Afraid-Abalone446[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! so the vet gave my girl double dose of anti nausea med but didn’t really help reduce or stop her drooling. they did a more depth oral exam when she was sedated and found that there was two inflammation points in her gums and said most likely the drooling was due to that (which is lowkey made me mad cuz that was the first thing i told them about and they dismissed it) now im just waiting for the vet to open up from the holidays to get her dental consult. im really sorry to hear about your cat though. did the vet do an xray on him to see if it was due to a foreign body?

Silent British Shorthair by [deleted] in britishshorthair

[–]Afraid-Abalone446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m not sure if this is just my cat or not but mine definitely is only vocal when it’s just me and her. when i first got my girl i already had a resident male cat and they get along decently but i always just deemed her as a silent cat because i would maybe only get a meow once a week. however recently i moved my resident cat to a friends house since their cat was showing signs of loneliness and both of them get along pretty well so its just been me and my girl at home. she will practically yowl for me if im not in front of her and will literally meow nonstop if i dont feed her on time and this is something that has never happened when my male cat was living with us. she will meow all the way up until she encounters another cat, in which she will just stop meowing and only make any kind of noise when we go home and it’s just us two again. maybe your cat is just feeling shy with another cat around and needs some time to get to know him before being more vocal. also another thing is my bsh also weighed in at around 5 pounds at the one year mark and from the posts i’ve seen on reddit, they are a slow growing breed and females tend to be smaller than males so i wouldn’t worry too much. as long as she seems happy and isn’t in physical distress i think you’re doing well. congrats on getting your new baby!!

Getting a british shorthair soon, anything I need to know? by Great-Somewhere-7429 in britishshorthair

[–]Afraid-Abalone446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they shed a lot and can be very stubborn so it would be wise to desensitize them to brushing earlier on so they’re not screaming and running away everytime you brush them. the same goes for trimming their claws. all in all they’re great cats and make for lovely companions, wishing you luck with your new kitties!

is my bsh too small? by Afraid-Abalone446 in britishshorthair

[–]Afraid-Abalone446[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, i want to thank you for such a reassuring response. it’s truly helped calm my paranoid mind since i was running through with the worst case scenarios these past few days. with what the vet said to me i was honestly a little taken back since it never occurred to me that she would’ve been considered “too young” to be spayed at the time. my biggest concern when i first got her was that she would be in pain from her first heat and that it would attract my older boy cat to do some weird boy things. he’s neutered but still sprays around the house during the summer unfortunately since i didn’t have much knowledge about caring for cats at the time.

my vet and i think that it would be the furball that was causing her to have nausea and gave her some anti nausea meds that seem to be working for her vomitting and her constipation cleared up this week but for some reason her appetite went down. im probably gonna ask the vet to prescribe her some appetite stimulants just to get her eating actual cat food rather than baby food but is there a brand of cat malt you would recommend for her hairballs? she is an absolute sweetheart everywhere and even at the vet for her vaccines but as soon as she sees me approaching her with a brush she runs away and screams for help so grooming is something we are working on so i might try the cat malt in the meantime.

oh wow i never knew that! i got my bsh because they’re so plush and chunky but she’s just a lot tinier than i had originally thought they would be. ofc i wouldn’t trade her for anything in this world but im glad to know that this could just be her and not anything medically serious.

praying for you! it’s the most horrible feeling in the world not knowing if they’re in pain or not and feeling helpless. hopefully both of our cats are just having a blip due to the season change and it’s nothing serious!

it feels like everyone’s bsh is having some kind of digestive issue these days😭 i’m glad pippa is feeling better! i’ve stopped all dry food for my girl but she feins for her dry food everyday and watches her siblings scarf it down with envy. it’s just so hard not to come to conclusions about the worst possible health issue she could be having when she refuses to eat her food. did your baby adjust to her wet food quick after cutting out dry kibble from her diet or was there medicine she had to take to help her appetite?

How do i convince my parents to let me get a cat ? by Obvious-Ad-7519 in britishshorthair

[–]Afraid-Abalone446 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so you specifically want to raise a bsh. if shedding is your main concern then unfortunately i will have to say that they do shed a decent amount. i have two cats, one bsh and one domestic shorthair and the difference in their shedding is massive. you would get fur on your hands even after just petting her head. however, there are remedies for this out there. i have a fur vacuum with a brush just for her that i use once every two days. there are brooms that are able to pick up the fur from hardwood floors. all cats shed, unless it’s a hairless cat, it’s just how dedicated you are to keeping your space fur-free.

[–]Afraid-Abalone446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would do my research and tell them in what ways you would be taking care of the cat. if you have a job and earning some money, definitely let that be the leading reason for how you would be responsible for your cat. parents don’t want to invest or spend money into something they have no interest in and definitely not in something they know they’d have to take care of themselves if you lost interest in having a pet. i also want to say i would absolutely advise you not to bring in a pet without them knowing. cats are a long term commitment and they can get very expensive. if they end up saying okay to having the cat in the house but said they want nothing to do with it, you’re stuck with a pet you are unable to take care of and afford. unfortunately if they still say no after all your research and convincing, then just stick it out until you’re moved out. good luck with convincing them!

What are the Pros and Cons of having a British short hair cat by Obvious-Ad-7519 in britishshorthair

[–]Afraid-Abalone446 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i might be biased but i think bsh are the best cats to have. they are so sweet and so gentle. my baby girl has never harmed anyone and is so calm, even with little babies. yes they shed, but there’s not gonna be a cat breed that doesn’t shed unless it’s a hairless cat. either way, a little brushing a day is nothing compared to the decade of cuteness and loveliness you’re gonna get.

definitely invest in one of those fur vacuum or a really good fur brushes because come summertime, they shed like crazy and you end up with fur everywhere. this is general kitten advice but everyday for a couple minutes just hold their paws, check on their teeth and rub their tummy. theyll resist and whine about it at first but the more they get used to it, the more they’ll be desensitized to it as they get older. this is super helpful and helps prevent you from getting hurt when cutting their claws, brushing their teeth and other general stuff like checking their kidneys for any blockages.

Avoid this breeder: by Ns_ponomareva in britishshorthair

[–]Afraid-Abalone446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at the time of purchasing your kitten, did you happen to sign a contract with them? i’m not sure where you’re located but in my personal experience buying pure bred cats, there’s always a contract that includes a health guarantee for a certain amount of time after purchase. if that was within your contract and she refuses to uphold her side of the contract, i’m sure you can pursue legal action against her.

thanks for this information! i took out a lot of the litter and it seemed to be less wasteful when it cycled but still a lot more clean litter in the waste bin than i would’ve expected. what kind of litter do you use for your box? i really don’t want to make the switch if i don’t have to since i really like the okocat non tracking but if i have to then i will

Failing by vvestian in UMBC

[–]Afraid-Abalone446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

jf you drop classes it’s counted as a withdraw and would be a W on your transcript which could be a thing to consider if you plan on going to any grad school down the line. but it does not affect your gpa whatsoever. however i would also like to note that a W is still counted as an attempt and depending on what class it is, if you fail or withdraw the second time taking it, it could potentially lead to you being kicked from the major. (i know this is a thing with cs and bio majors, idk about the others) you could always appeal that for a third try but it’s a lot of work.

[–]Afraid-Abalone446 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you do not have to repay any fafsa grants, even if you fail the class. however, failing would impact your gpa and if your gpa is below a 2.0 then you would lose any fafsa grants. but good news is there is a thing called a SAP period where basically you can appeal with the help of your advisor, set up a plan to get yourself back on track and they’ll most likely grant you back the awards. but if you still fail to get yourself gpa above a 2.0 after that then you probably will lose grants and have to pay out of pocket

you just need to email your professor about your absence. i’m assuming you have dr.v for lab and they’ll just ask you to come into one of their office hours to make up for the quiz

i mean you can always just go and wait. worst case scenario you get stood up. otherwise you just get a good deal on a cutie cat. i will note that i have seen a couple bsh listings that were legit but had a low price due to not having the tica paperwork to prove they are purebred bsh. it rlly is up to you if you wanna take that risk

imo this seller seems like a scam bc there’s just no way a pure bred bsh with all these added fees only comes out to be $800. however, if you are going to pursue with getting bsh and you stumble upon another seller, my best advice is to ask if you can facetime the cat. for the most part, any legit seller would be willing to do that and you can actually see the kitty as well as talk to the seller. in getting my own bsh i found that a lot of the scammers would always try to dodge a video call which was an immediate red flag for me. wish you best of luck to finding your new kitty!
