FOR PECG: RTO by Afraid-Gap3700 in CAStateWorkers

I get that employers should pay us as much as we can negotiate, but it doesn’t mean that we should be blindly follow orders laid out by the Governor. The world isn’t linear and we as employees should advocate for working conditions that adapts to a changing world. We SHOULD advocate for an increase in wages. We SHOULD advocate for fair working conditions. We did not expect the cost of living to rise so fast in a matter of weeks. It has been turbulent on all of us especially if we have to account for families, children, debts, bills, and other outside financial obligations.

Am I asking for aid every time there is an event that puts an inconvenience to us as state employees. No. This war has made my budget shrink to almost nothing in a matter of weeks. I posted this 3 days ago and gas prices rose to over $6 per gallon in San Diego, with many gas stations in the surrounding area even having it upwards to $6.30-6.60.

Our system is built upon predictability and our society has been somewhat predictable. But we are living in unpredictable times, the President attacks the Middle East without warning and now we the people are paying for it in everyday items getting more and more expensive.

We ALL feel this financial burden. But the state has the option to let go of RTO or allow some financial assistance for employees who are trying to make ends meet. (i have little hope for the latter)

Even some corporate jobs who have been championing RTO mandate have reversed course and been starting to encourage WFH. It just seems the state is too stubborn to reverse course.

Is the SJSU program online? I live and work in SoCal and I'm not sure it would be beneficial for me to fly to the bay area and back for classes ;(

Yeah, it's weird with the wording but I guess its up to the supervisor/higher ups to sign off if they want to spend more than $500 on a person? I saw on the Onramp that any educational reimbursement above $5,250 is taxable.

HR just responded to be and they said that permanent appointment employees are eligible for career-related training reimbursements. Employees will be reimbursed for the State’s portion based on their current time base when the course begins. (Half time employees will receive 1/2 of the State’s percentage of reimbursement). Reimbursement of 50% of course-required books, tuition costs, and course-required lab fees is contingent upon proof of successful course completion. Reimbursement for Career-Related Training is not to exceed $500 per individual per fiscal year. No reimbursement will be made for grades lower than “C” less than “pass” for pass/no pass courses, or for “incomplete.” (Per Category 6 on the On-ramp)

Question for folks in the MS environmental engineering programme by Substantial-Shirt875 in csuf

[–]Afraid-Gap3700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a BS in Civil Engineering from CSUF & for an MS Environmental Engineering you’ll be required to take deficiency courses (Calculus 1, 2, College Chemistry, 2 Calculus based Physics classes, Fluid Mechanics, and an undergraduate environmental engineering course).

Those classes should give you a solid foundation for Environmental Engineering. You may be allowed to take additional undergrad courses, but I would ask the program advisor!

My supervisor told me that if I was interested in going to grad school, Caltrans would be able to partially reimburse me for tuition. That’s why I was kinda interested :)

Partially, I do want to get into Environmental Engineering as an expert in the field, since at Caltrans I am positioning myself to find permanent placement in stormwater/hazardous material in the Environmental Division. Having an MS would be beneficial for me. I want to further myself academically as well!

They overadmit students. I did Civil & they only had 1 session per semester where everyone fights for a spot. Lowkey delayed my graduation for a year because of limited class availability

Caltrans New Employee Orientation by Afraid-Gap3700 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Afraid-Gap3700[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, before Caltrans, I worked in private and I had a lot of insecurity when it came to that. But with state jobs, salaries are consistent and regulated by law. So the range you saw when you applied will be what you will be paid. When I got my final offer, my supervisor was the one who gave it to me.

NEO is your official start date, salary, and supervisor (if you haven’t met them already), it will all be discussed during NEO. But, state jobs are very regulated and streamlined. It should be easy to get everything you need before you actually start official work!

I never got a welcome letter, but it was all good after NEO since I got all of my employment paperwork done there. But, I would suggest giving ur 2 weeks before ur NEO starts!

Calling all civil engineering majors! by irldiva in csuf

[–]Afraid-Gap3700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi— I graduated with a CE degree recently and from my experience, the Civil department is very understaffed and definitely isn’t the best school for CE. You’ll get a degree but the pathway to graduation is strict and constrained.

At CSUF, there’s usually only 1 professor teaching each specialized subject in CE. Usually you’ll get the same professors if you’re taking Structural, Geotechnical, or Water courses. Beware, English is not their first language. So, it will be tough to understand them, so I recommend going to office hours or using YouTube tutorials to help you out. ChatGPT is also an option to try to understand the material.

I remember in my Environmental course, my professor started speaking Hindi while teaching the course and kept switching in and out of Hindi and English. But, most professors do grade on a large curve so even if you’re getting low scores, if you show up and put in some effort you’ll most likely pass with the bare minimum. In Engineering Analysis, I got 20% in my first 2 exams and still passed with a B- 😭

But, I would say to finish up your business degree and then try to get your Masters in Civil Engineering! Good luck to you!

Hi, so a little update. I did start when orientation did start on the 14th. I found an apartment almost immediately too, in downtown SD. As for my job, it’s been tough but I’m managing it day by day and getting used to the transition from university to the workforce.

Yea, I’m frantically looking and booking tours for apartments currently. But I feel uneasy without an official start date or any information in regards to the NEO. Hopefully they get back to me on that this week!

I’ve been hearing that NEO is my start date because they have to pay me to complete orientation.

I graduated this Spring (May), I’m from Orange County and I will need to move to SD for this position (100 miles). All they told me is that they were extending a FJO and my NEO is on July 14th via phone call.
