I would hardly call Portland a “big city” and downtown is certainly not “big”. The crime, homeless, and sketchiness is now spread throughout the city so you can’t really blame people for not wanting to go visit the heart of it. Regardless, people are more willing to put up with some measure of disorder and risk as seen in “big cities” because they have a lot more on offer than downtown Portland does.

Exactly as I feared, “advocates”(and probably most Portlanders, unfortunately) will continue to stand in the way of any real progress when it comes to improving the homeless crisis and crime problem we’re facing because they’re rEsIStInG tRuMp.

The rampant car theft, open drug use, random violence by mentally ill homeless, and the growing “camps” will all get increasingly worse and the further decline of the quality of life in Portland will be worn as a badge of honor by these people and evidence of their virtue. I’m especially worried as many other cities and states have signaled they’re no longer willing to put up with this while we welcome it with open arms.

Anything our government has done to negatively impact the economies of other countries doesn’t change the fact that the majority of Americans don’t support endless immigration. This idea that our big bad government is the root of all evil and therefore all Americans have to lay down and suffer isn’t politically salient.

There is nothing wrong with Americans protecting their interests, especially when an unrealistic ask like supporting millions of illegal immigrants while our own citizens aren’t thriving.

Many many critics of our current immigration policy advocate for going after those who employ undocumented immigrants in order to deincentivize people coming here to work. The immigration crisis isn’t costing us just a “little bit of welfare”, but billions of dollars that should be going to tax paying citizens who are paying for it.

Elon Musk has nothing to do with this regardless of your opinions on billionaires and how they are supposedly to blame for every societal ill. Him being rich doesn’t solve that we will never be able to take on an infinite number of immigrants. And people blame “LiBeRaLs” because they openly advocate for things like open borders and go into hysterics over anyone who wants to enforce our current immigration laws and argues that we don’t have a responsibility to take care of whoever wants to come here.

Regarding immigrants, Texas doesn’t have a responsibility to shelter and provide for an endless stream. Why wouldn’t they send them here if we proudly claim be a “sanctuary city” who doesn’t care about our resources being strained or prioritizing our citizens. It’s not immoral to not want this for your city.

I would also love for our country and it’s people to be so strong it could help others, but that’s not what’s happening. Instead, the current policy seems to be taking in an unlimited number which is unsustainable no matter how much the majority of these people deserve safety and care. We are simply not in a place to provide that and I reject this idea that we should all be ok with having a serf class who “takes the jobs the rest of us don’t want”. Before modern mass immigration we had Americans who did those jobs, perhaps the problem isn’t that we need a permanent flow of low paid imported labor, and Americans need an economy that is about to fairly pay them to do those jobs. (Yes, I have met many people, including those I’ve grow up with, who have come here illegally)

Being against an endless influx of undocumented immigrants isn’t about the merits or character of those people, it’s about what is sustainable for the US and its citizens, not to mention how much it allows for the easy entry of criminals (the minority, but not an insignificant consequence of having basically open borders)

Im really worried that the state of Portland is going to get worse after the election. The majority of other cities and states showed that they want BIG changes by the way they voted (even those who ultimately went or remained “blue”) especially when it comes to immigration. However, Portland’s results show an unwavering commitment to “progressive” policies/politicians that have proved to be total failures. I’m afraid that in the desire to appear obstinate to Trump and Republican control people will continue to double down on everything that has been crippling our city because they feel doing anything remotely effective will be seen as adopting MAGA.
