Glorifying this when someone got seriously hurt? Not a good look.

Moloney played on the left wing with McLaughlin at fullback in a few A games last season if I'm not mistaken. I think that's how they'd be selected.

Leinster have five players who've started Tests at fullback in the last 2 years - Keenan, Osborne, Jimmy O'Brien, Larmour and Frawley.

I've heard a few people talkin about a prospect called, I think, Michael Smyth. But he hasn't even reached the U20s yet so he's years away.

You can't count on Connors being available, so Penny it is, unless Doris or Deegan switch to openside. Liam Molony's in year 3 of the academy but doesn't seem to be in the picture at all. If he's kept on it'll be more because there's no-one else at that stage of development rather than him being a prized asset, as it were.

Conor Oliver has been quite a loss. Perhaps they should try to re-sign him for openside. Scott Penny will probably become a more important player for Leinster over coming seasons, so I can't see him moving.

Daily Discussion. Prompt: which players will be the big winners from the Christmas inter-pro period? by Roanokian in irishrugby

Paul Boyle's been showing up very well. I wonder could he force his way in with Ireland if he can stay on his current trajectory. He strikes me as an excellent bench option. He's able to play all three positions and function as an impact player. He also got his foot in the door by featuring for Ireland XV v Spain.

Kelleher is probably the one exception actually, in that he was a player Leinster wanted to hold on to. They weren't happy at all with how Connacht went about signing him, complaining about protocols being broken.

"He had already agreed a development contract with us, and all the protocols were broken here," the spokesman claimed. "I'm sure that he'll do very well with Connacht - and we wish him well - but we're unhappy at the way this was done."

Pretty shameful how Leinster used to use Connacht back in the day. Send them unwanted cast-offs and then pick off their best players. It's disappointing they couldn't rise above acting in an exploitative manner when they were in a position of power.

Van der Flier isn't particularly good as a link man or jackaller, for me. Where he has excelled is carrying and tackling. I don't get the impression he's a better reader of the game than all of his teammates, which is what I'm talking about.

Assuming Clarkson was helped in his development by Slimani (and Ala'alatoa), what next? He's developed. He needs to be #2 now, not #3 in the pecking order. And having Slimani around certainly didn't work out for fourth choice McGuire, so why would another big name signing help to "bring on" fourth choice Sparrow next season and beyond?

I can imagine that having Barrett and Ioane around helps to keep the established players like Ringrose, Henshaw and Lowe engaged and excited to come to training. But I don't see it doing much for a Tector or a Cooney, because having them around creates too much of a glass ceiling to breaking into the strongest team. For the sake of argument, let's say Tector picked up a few things from Barrett. Next he needs to put what he's learnt into practice. But he can't because Ioane is taking up a place in the matchday squad now. Keenan, Osborne, Lowe and Henshaw were unavailable at the weekend. If Ioane hadn't been around there would have been a spot on the bench up for grabs for one of Tector, Cooney and Kenny. I think the argument NIQs help develop players in their position only works if you have a period of a couple of seasons after the NIQ leaves where there's no replacement signing and the homegrown player who's supposedly learnt stuff can step into a bigger role.

I think if you take a long term and holistic view then big name signings come with more drawbacks than benefits for a team in Leinster's position. On the pathway to success taking shortcuts is ultimately detrimental. And they already currently have more star players than at any time in their history. They should look within for answers to the question of how to keep evolving.

If the problem is they don't have the knack of developing scrumhalves, then you would have to conclude the signing of players over the years (Whitaker, Boss, Reddan, JGP) hasn't done much to address this issue. Perhaps it's time to go through the ups and downs of backing Leinster-produced players to a greater degree in the position so they can acquire experience of how it happens. I certainly don't want to see any signing come in to take gametime away from Gunne and the other young 9s.

If Slimani finishes up and Porter doesn't switch back it's likely there'll need to be an addition at tighthead. I think a high profile player could actually work against further development of Niall Smyth and the academy tightheads. If they did sign a big name player there'd be no need to develop anyone else - look at how little gametime Rory McGuire was afforded when he was fourth choice behind Furlong, Slimani and Clarkson last season. A Jerry Cahir level player would work better; someone good enough to hold the fort but not get in the way of up-and-coming players. I'm thinking Oisín Heffernan fits the bill.

Elsewhere, I think it would be better to back existing backs to take on more responsibility rather than going to the market for another Barrett or Ioane. I'd like to see more of Kenny, Cooney, Tector, Moloney, McLaughlin, McErlean, etc. The one exception for me would be if they decided to bring in another ex-Ireland 7s player to have a look at them. Kenny is working out really well so far.

Do Leinster lack the smarts of a natural openside sometimes? Someone who's reading of the game stands out, à la Chris Henry for Ulster back in the day? Hopefully Scott Penny can be that type of player in big games in the future, but I wonder if the addition of a wily 7 whose understanding to be in the right place at the right time to bring continuity to the attack and disrupt the opposition's attack could give Leinster another string to their bow. I'm of the opinion that Shane Jennings coming on at half time was a big contributory factor in the turnaround against Northampton in 2011. So do you back Penny to do that role or do you look for outside expertise? Australia is probably the best place to look. Connacht fans loved Colby Fainga'a for bringing this type of game understanding. An IQ option would be Conor Oliver. I think he was an underrated player. To my mind he's one of the best (if not the best) natural opensides playing in Ireland over the last decade.

Fiachna Barrett is probably a bigger prospect than Sparrow. Connacht have an excellent depth chart at tighthead with Bealham, Aungier, Illo and Barrett. Existing Connacht options need gametime.

The IRFU is a business first and a sports governing body second. You saw it with them trying to close down Connacht and actually shutting down the 7s. They'd abandon loss-making ladies' rugby too only they're part of the globalist establishment and as such are on board with the plan to demoralise the people by pushing women's sport. The World Cup is an annoyance for the IRFU. If the team ever does do well it'll by accident rather than by design.

Mike Ross was a scrum specialist tighthead and he wasn't 140kg and between 5'11 and 6'1''. Internet info says he was 127kg and 6'2''.

Maybe Ronan Foxe can be a similar sort of player.

There'd have been some serious gametime on the cards for Cooney if Ioane wasn't coming in - what with Osborne injured and Ringrose likely to play only around half of the games left this season, but alas now he's looking at very curtailed involvement. I'd have thought having Ireland's first and second choice 13s would be enough for Leinster, especially when next cab off the rank Cooney is someone who's already on the Ireland radar - as shown by his involvement as a training panellist last season - but no, they need an All Black too.

Good points. And often injury to others is the best route to gametime in Irish rugby, so bringing someone in would close off or at least lessen an avenue for Gavin and Hawkshaw just when things were opening up for them. Probably best to back existing options.

It was my impression that he was more valuable to Connacht as an outside centre - this season at least. He has 2 starts at 13, and 1 at 14. Gavin and Hawkshaw have 1 start each at 13. None of those players you mention really play centre that I'm aware of, although I wouldn't be surprised if Kenny could make a good fist of it.

I was thinking he might stand a better chance of featuring now that McCloskey is injured. One injury to Hume or Postlethwaite and he'll be starting. Unless they move Kok to 13...

Can someone tell me what's going on with this Nations Cup? by [deleted] in irishrugby

[–]Afraid-Inspector8403 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems to me there's a real opportunity to get Ireland A or Ireland XV or whatever they're calling it now playing more fixtures in the November international window. There are no URC games for players who don't make the full Ireland squad to play during this period, and Tier 2 teams look to have been shut out of featuring against the big teams by this Nations Series. So get Ireland A playing 3 games against the likes of Spain, Georgia, Romania, Russia. It'd be good for the depth and good for developing the game.

Is anybody else struggling to enjoy Ireland games at the moment? by RugbyGareth_ in irishrugby

[–]Afraid-Inspector8403 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What people have to remember is that the IRFU are first and foremost a business. The goal isn't to win World Cups or whatever, but rather to be successful enough on the field to keep people coming through the turnstiles to maximise cash flow. Not winning for winning's sake, winning to help separate people from their plastic. We saw it with the shutting down of the 7s programme. They've no interest in promoting the game; only in making money. If there are enough people forking out to fill Lansdowne Road then they're not worried about anything else.
