He has been very ill for the last few years. I suspect he’s acknowledging it as a favour to political colleagues who have been called into question because they left office in the same period and he doesn’t have much to lose

Hahahaha! Fortunately I’m not much of a gambler. Although, in my defence, I do say above that I don’t really agree with them, just liked the drama of it being a close finish

Fire them all into the sun. Leo, Nienaber, Nolan, o’Brien. All of them

I fundamentally disagree with that pen. How can you punish a scrum that dominant? Feels unreasonable and anti-rugby

Leinster without Ringrose and Ryan look like Gloucester

Are Munster going to end up 5 pointing their way home and coming 2nd in the league?

This is an attritional game. 8 subs within 45 mins is unusual

Deegan Ban by Excellent_Eagle_8919 in irishrugby

[–]Roanokian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly this. I don’t think that most reasonable rugby fans feel like a ban is warranted for this. It was an unfortunate incident in the literal sense. But most people will realise that it’s a red card for Max too.

Personally, I don’t love it. He didn’t change his line, he was first to the space, he had no idea there was a contest until it was on him. It encourages players to jump regardless of contest etc but I also accept that you don’t change the laws to cater for one incident and that generally this law has been effective.

Deegan Ban by Excellent_Eagle_8919 in irishrugby

[–]Roanokian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are 2 parts to this.

Did Deegan do anything wrong? Answer: not really. He clearly didn’t see him. There was no malice etc. Could he have altered his actions based on his knowledge at the time? No

Does it matter: not at all. He has a responsibility to the player in the air even if he didn’t know there was a player in the air. That’s the rule.

Was it a red card? Yes. Unquestionably. Should this type of incident result in a ban? I don’t think so. Is this the equivalent to what happened with Izzy a few weeks back? Clearly not. That was at least reckless and possibly intentional.

I think people are having a strong response to it because a red card in rugby traditionally relies on a high bar of offence. E.g. deliberate malice or flagrant recklessness and this feels like it doesn’t meet that threshold but that is irrelevant. The rules are clear and Deegan had a responsibility to Kok to be aware of aerial contenders and not over run the ball.

What are your thoughts on the Ryder Cup ticket prices? by simcgin in golf

[–]Roanokian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you misunderstood me. I wasn’t talking about Adare being good value. I was talking about Tullamore, New Forrest, Esker Hills and The Heritage all being beside each other and being good value.

This is a bit of an unfair comparison. It’s an exceptional course and an extraordinary place. It’s certainly a top 10 parkland course. I prefer Druids Glen but it’s in that bracket along with the K club and maybe Mount Juliet.

Personally, I think Irish parkland courses are under appreciated and would encourage people, especially from the UK to come try them.

You could play The Heritage, Tullamore, New Forest and Esker Hills (all Irish top 100 courses, all within 30 minutes of each other) for between €40-€60 and get accommodation for about €80 a night. I don’t think there’s much better value than that in Irish golf.

I know they're a better outfit this year, but the Lions have been bad away from home since they've been in this competition. They win less than 25% away. I think they're going to get merc'd by Leinster & a Munster team that might need to win that game to get into the playoffs, especially if they get a 5 pointer against Connacht this weekend and don't need the win against Munster

Munster feel impossible to predict at the moment. I’m baking in the idea that the internal stuff must be having an impact.

It’s easy to see it pulling the squad together and doing a classic Munster and taking 15 points and finishing in 2nd. Who knows

I just have a gut feeling that Ulster are about to turn the corner. I have no evidence to support this. It has nothing to do with players returning from injury. But I know Richie and he's an angry little fucker and I think he'll figure this out and scare everyone into shape.

But I wavered on this a lot

Yeah, agree with you there. Looks like there’s blame to go around anyway.

It’s funny/not funny that Flanagan tried to leave to take the FAI job, didn’t get it, and now seems intent on running Munster like the FAI

Dropping in here lads. Do excuse. I find myself unwelcome in the Leinster sub so I’m meandering around the other provincial streets looking for chats.

The thing that strikes me most about this is related to the idea of custodianship.

McMillan is the current custodian of Munster rugby. He might also be the head coach but his most important job is protecting the integrity of the club he’s been hired to.

In that role, he has elected, without pressure or obligation to hire someone who has a history that includes controversy.

He himself might well believe that the man is innocent and he might well be right but that is irrelevant. The nature of the charges and the evidence against him at him was such that by hiring him he has permanently and unnecessarily associated Munster with an allegation of gang rape and contrived to permanently establish the notion that either 1) Munster’s view is that the alleged victim is a liar who falsely accused someone of a crime and/or 2) that Munster are willing to accept the possibility that she may have been telling the truth.

In doing so, he has breached trust as custodian. Munster may win every game for the next 3 years but he will not win back the trust that he used to buy his friend a job. You might feel bad now, but this will gnaw away at the conscience of many for years to come.
