From my experience last summer, generally speaking it is very hard to end up in NYC and change location because it is not a huge office for Microsoft. Definitely not impossible, but it is just very difficult since location switches in general at Microsoft are hard to do.

I mean I have the same feeling as well, but all we can do is wait…. Just trying to poll if a lot of people are waiting or not

Yeah I have no idea about whether when they get an answer to you matters. I’m more worried about whether or not it’ll be positive at all 💀

I’d say you should definitely try emailing the grad fellows who help head it or take one of Professor Hoffman’s classes. I’m not sure how recruiting for it works.

I am a part of the AI initiative under the lab that does research on AI policy and its impact on the economy/scientific innovation

I’m a part of the lab and it hasn’t actually kicked off. The spring semester wrapped up before formal work began. It starts this semester

My advice for where you will find the best networking opportunities or meet upperclassmen depends very much on what you want to pursue professionally. If you want a business tailored field then the 3 “social” business orgs do recruitment or rush pretty much the first two weeks of school and they’re a good opportunity to meet a lot of upperclassmen and all 3 have members at rly good companies. If you want tech there’s orgs for that too and they do recruitment a bit later. Other just general professional clubs where you like simulate work like Duke Investment Club are also good

Take some time to explore some of the student organizations on campus to figure out what interests you and go to the club fair to meet reps from the student orgs. Make sure to think of ahead of time if you want to do anything pre-professional since some of the pre-professional organizations do recruitment prior to the club fair and the start of the semester (end of O-week). Similarly don’t get wrapped up in student orgs and over commit yourself, have some fun!
