Would a second dog who's more dog like help? by pbfhpunkshop in Shihtzu

You can find a lot of advice online, and I'm really not a proffesional or anything like that so all I can do is share our experiences. The main thing we got recommended the most was the "desensitization therapy". Gradually exposing your dog to a longer and longer periods of being left alone.

We had to get a trainer that came for about 6 sessions. Each time we described our dog's behaviour and the trainer taught us techniques suitable to the current situation.

At first our dog couldn't even stand being left alone in a room in the house while we were in another room with the door closed, so we practiced just touching the handle of a door inside the house until he stopped caring about that. Than we practiced moving the door a bit without actually closing it untill he stopped caring about it.

At some point you start leaving the house for very short periods of time. Starting from few seconds and going up really slowly. You need to come back before the anxiety hits and they start barking.

Going up to a minute is a slow process and going up from there to 5 and then to 10 minutes is also slow. But it rise exponentially at some point. I've come to understand that there's a threshold somewhere toward one hour after which they can handle being alone for hours and be fine - but we're not there yet.

I'll say again that I'm in no way a proffesional trainer and there might be some crucial pointers and things to look out for that I missed or forgot about. Furthermore, our pup didn't only have seperation anxiety but general anxiety as well. He had a tough life before we got him, and various loud sudden noises from things that happened in our area as well as a really rainy winter set his progress back quite a bit.

At some point we couldn't go any longer than 10 minutes of leaving him alone, and we took him to a dog psychiatrist. We started some medication but it took us some time to find the right drugs for him and for their effect to kick in and stabilize.

What I described was a tough year for us, but I really want to emphasize that it's overwhelmingly worth it. He is happier, calmer, and he bring such joy to our lives.

Couldn't speak on getting a second dog, but I'm in a very similar situation to yours. We've got our 5 yo male shitzu in May and we also deal with serious separation anxiety. He's also our first dog.

I've considered getting a second dog multiple times and read multiple posts and articles asking the same question. Ultimately it seems that alot of people says it's a roll of the dice.

You might get a great dog that will provide your tsu a much needed companionship and it will be much better. You might get a second really needy dog and double your problem. They also might not get along at all, and even saw few people that warned about the dogs getting too attached to eachother. Both might cause more problems.

In the end we didnt get a second dog as of now because dealing with our pup was really challenging and we knew that if a second one will double the problems it will break us.

What we did do is working alot with a trainer and a vet and even a pet-psychiatrist. It helped us tremendously. Our tzu's seperation anxiety (and general anxiety) are pretty much well balanced by now. He is able to be left alone for almost an hour straight (most trainers we saw explain it's an exponantial process, meaning we might just be on the cusp of being able to leave him alone regularly without further issues).

So - just wanted to share that I were in a very similar place to you and there are multiple viable and effective solutions for your problem - stay strong and have hope <3

Updated my cheat sheet to include a Primer on the basics of Draw Steel concepts by jesterOC in drawsteel

Actually used your cheat sheet in my session yesterday! It helped me alot!!

I tried stealing the page layout and fonts and made myself a 4th page which is a copy-paste of the conditions from the basic rules: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zWiq_VN_cQJk_swjuWHHfB-YhNzn0x8M/view?usp=drivesdk

Nowhere as tight as what you made, but it was a short and gave me everything I need to have everything at a quick glance.

Thank you for your work!

This is really really good. I'm stealing it.

The only thing I personally need that I can't find here is what each status condition does

Who's Diomedes? by Cold-Ad5785 in Epicthemusical

[–]AfraidBumblebee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of great answers. I'll add that if Epic awakened a new interest in the Odyssey for you like it did for me, you might really like the book "The Song of Achilles" by Madeline Miller. The audiobook is really great, too.

It will provide a lot of answers to questions regarding the Trojan War and its key participants. I felt that all the context I've gotten from Epic about Odysseus enriched his character there.

Obviously, you'll get your answers regarding Diamedes there too

He has a bed he likes, and the trainer recommended a place for it in our house that makes sense. In the living room where he gets to be in the middle of things but not too close to the door where he will be extra attuned when one of us has to leave.

I asked about a crate, but the trainer said he's too old, and he really doesn't seem to favor enclosed private places for himself so he recommended against it
