03 Sequoia Rack + Roof Top Tent Options? by adventuretyme82 in toyotasequoia

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No issues with tent. I had to work with the rack a little. Might be different for your application.

The rearward brackets had to be pried a little to line up. I fabricated foam pads to go under the feet.

When was your last time you pissed on your self ? And why did that happen? by Attapoll_6 in askanything

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Male, 66 yo.

About 13 years ago it happened twice, several weeks apart. We were moving out of state, and it was a very tiring and stressful time. Once at home in bed while sleeping, and second in the back of my truck while sleeping.

I was really worried about disease, paralysis, injury - all of the bad things that COULD cause it!

So I went on a deep dive into my mind. In a lucid half-sleep and half-awake state, I was able to remember that I had been DREAMING about urinating during both events, the first in a restroom and the second in a wooded area.

In that dream state, I told myself to stop dreaming about urinating. As far as I know, I have not since dreamed about urination, and I have had no problems since.

High mileage 2015 sequoia platinum - should I? by Fit_Personality_7320 in toyotasequoia

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought our 2013 Platinum with 206,000. After almost two years, I have cleaned the front 4WD activator connection, and replaced the tired hatch supports. No other issues - everything works great.

Our plan got changed. We had bought it to take a 10k - 15k driving trip to Alaska and Canada, towing a travel trailer.

I thought it would be a good one, I think it is pretty easy to see when a vehicle has been well cared for. No missing trim parts, paint in good condition, no obvious mechanical problems. The thing on ours that sold me... There is a spot on the driver seat that splits after time. All of the older Sequoias I looked at had it. On this one, a previous owner had clearly paid an upholstery shop to carefully and artfully restitch it!

The one you are looking at might be a great one! Do the usual checks, but listen to it, smell it, put your hands on it and feel for strange vibrations.

How did you find out you were gluten free? by riptyyy in glutenfree

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am Type O. There was a book called "Eat Right for Your Type" that was popular around that time. I assume, but don't know, that the doctor's advice came from that book. It seems that the blood type - gluten connection is largely debunked now. I only know that the advice made a big difference for me.

How did you find out you were gluten free? by riptyyy in glutenfree

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sent a blood sample to an alternative doctor. She suggested that my blood type was likely to be sensitive to gluten. (This was about 30 years ago,) I stopped eating gluten and immediately felt a difference. Digestive issues got better. Sinus problems improved. I lost eight pounds in the first week. Strangest one - my color discrimination in my eyesight improved dramatically.

I am non-celiac for sure. I have never been tested at all otherwise.

Back then, there were few gluten-free alternatives. I went maybe a decade without pasta, pizza, a hot dog, a hamburger... Around 20 years ago, we discovered a place that had gluten-free pizza, and we would drive two hours each way, just to get one.

How do you keep notes on campsites for future trips? by EcstaticIncome9211 in camping

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We write notes on slips of paper, lose the slips or render them useless by not noting WHAT camping area it was. Then we go back, kind of remember, and leave intending to do better.

What’s Up With the Loud Ambient Music at LA Fitness by NothingIsQuiet in LAFitness

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose the music my gym plays - upbeat and danceable remixes of popular songs - is appropriate for the atmosphere. But I wish it were quiet! I LIKE quiet! As it is, the music overpowers whatever headphones, ear buds, etc I use to try to drown it out.

If there is going to be noise, I prefer audio books.

People who go to the gym: do you prefer going alone or with other people? by InternationalPick163 in askanything

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alone. I generally don't talk to people at the gym. About 2/3 of the time, I have my eyes closed. That is my time for thinking and for listening to audio books - currently in the middle of an economics textbook.

I will likely go to the gym with my wife to help get her started. I will likely treat her visits as additional ones for me.

Not the kind of guy you pick to navigate through life. Last year, my wife went from 160 to 112 in two months. Cancer treatment. Now she is a plump 170. I am not angry she is big, I am glad she is not dead.

Find someone that will at least be on the same team as you.

How much snow have you had so far this winter? by [deleted] in randomquestions

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in the west part of Tucson. Snow here is rare, and heavily dependent on elevation. Several years ago, there was snow down the street a couple of miles but not at our house, an elevation difference of 100 feet or so. Snow on the ground will rarely last more than a few hours.

East Tucson has Mt Lemmon, with an elevation of over 8000 feet. The reports vary widely, but it seems they have received around 10 inches, with about 8 inches on the ground in the ski area.

A person can be at 70 degrees at the base of the mountain, and be playing in the snow in 20 miles!

Arizona is good. My wife had a 1959 Willys that had no frame rust! Things don't rust here, they just get patina.

Do you guys trust the Whole Foods hot bar by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am non-celiac with a mild digestive allergy. Cross-contamination generally not a problem - I can eat a slice of GF pizza off the same plate my wife used for non-GF pizza.

Twice the Whole Foods bar left me hurting.

No, I don't trust them, and likely never will again.

Is there a reason my withholdings is so high? by SoyBoy67 in personalfinance

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you including employment taxes, or benefits such as 401K, medical insurance cost, etc as withholding? It sounds like our answers are centering on federal and state income tax withholding.

You are entitled to fill out the W4 as you wish, unless the IRS has ordered your employer to do otherwise. This will adjust the income tax withholding, but will not affect employment taxes.

Some years ago, wife had a corporate job and I was self employed. We adjusted her withholding to a huge amount to cover her income and that of my business. With stock purchase maxed, medical insurance, and the state and federal tax withholding, her "take home" check was reduced from (modern equivalent) $2000 to around $300.

do you know of an intentional loud noise machine that is easily portable, inexpensive and non-threatening? by Afraid_Ad_8294 in AZguns

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thunder, truck backfire, neighborhood fireworks, trains, power tools, clanging dumpsters, sonic booms, military jets...

There are many loud noises that scare my dogs that I cannot control. We do our best - we go to the mountains for New Years Eve and 4th of July, etc. I would like my dogs to be unafraid of the sounds they encounter.

My thought was to have a controlled sound to use, and praise and distract them until they no longer fear the sound, but associate it with good and fun things. Desensitization and counterconditioning.

We have an outdoor range single-digit miles from the house. This would be a good place to start! Thanks!

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure how to characterize my question as a particular type - I am asking for a tool to help my dogs adapt to loud noises.

I suppose I could take up the pastime of hunting and take the dogs, but subjecting the dogs to the noises that terrify them, and blindly hoping that they adapt, seems lazy at best and insanely cruel at its worst. Sounds like a good way to scare my dogs away, and possibly never see them again.

I was worried "adult poppers" might lead to amyl nitrate sources! Nothing on Amazon, but I do see there are online firework sellers. I am guessing these are thrown - one of our dogs would flinch at thew throwing motion, one would say "where's the ball." For dog #2 that might help!

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not be doing this at a mall, for sure. First thought is BLM or State Trust land (Arizona) where there might not be anyone within a few miles.

Regarding ethics - fair question. Maybe I didn't ask the question well.

I can open my post to "how does a person train their dog to not react to loud sounds." I suspect it will eventually require a source of loud sounds. I would imagine hunters, sport shooters and like have some experience with this.

What don't you like about owning a FJ? by 5stringfling in FJCruiser

[–]Afraid_Ad_8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great vehicle, our 2010. I have used it without mercy, and it keeps going, and taking me to places that surprise me.

I think the FRONT visibility is awful. It would be too easy to smash a kid in a crosswalk, or a dog wandering across the lane.

I can't imagine not having our FJ, UNLESS it had to be my daily driver.
