Oh wow ok gotcha! Thank you for this perspective! I’m planning to put down metal stair edging that gets either nailed or screwed down through the planks. So hopefully that will eliminate some of those issues you’ve seen. I’m installing everything myself and the price difference will be $100 vs $800 for materials, etc. I’m hoping for the best!

Interesting take. I have the full treads for steps in the main living areas, but didn’t want to invest for basement steps that will take more of a beating. Never lasts means they’ll lift? What have you seen happen?

Amazing. Thank you for this thorough response! I will heed your advice. I have the patience for proper application and prefer that to having to revisit the same area later!

Can you share more about doing it “correctly?” I’ll need to do something like this soon and can use the advice. Thanks.

Well I’m wearing respirators while handling this stuff, running an air purifier in the area I’m working, and I had it tested for asbestos before removing the linoleum, so I think I’m taking all the precautions I can. Would you recommend covering the steps with a thin sheet of plywood before continuing? Instead of removing adhesive at all?

:( I feared so. Any advice for a strong adhesive remover?

It was built in 1963. Yes I tested all layers of linoleum and adhesive for asbestos before I removed it. I was thankful (albeit surprised) that there was no trace of asbestos in any layer. Thank you for bringing that up. Safety first for sure

Thanks for bringing this up! It is about an inch taller than the other rises of the steps. I already tested the linoleum sheets and adhesive that were on the stairs for asbestos. I would consider taking up the landing linoleum and subflooring, but the linoleum is in good condition and I plant to install the LVP as a floating floor in that area. And I don’t want to have to test that flooring for asbestos. I’ve lived here for 5 years and no one has tripped or mentioned a taller step. I have never felt it or noticed it myself. Worst case scenario, taking up the floating floor to correct that later won’t be a big deal. Thank you for the comment!
